Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is probably no national day that has such global popularity as St. Patrick’s Day. On St. Patrick’s Day, it is reputed that ‘Everyone is Irish’. What are the factors and factions that give the day such popular appeal? Is St. Patrick’s Day the same around the world – in Japan, Northern Ireland and Montserrat – as it is in the Republic of Ireland and the United States? Just how does ‘Irishness’ figure in the celebration and commemoration of St. Patrick’s Day, and how has this day been commoditized, consumed and contested? Does St. Patrick’s Day ‘belong’ to the people, the nation or the brewery? This edited volume brings together the best St. Patrick’s Day and Irish Studies scholars from the fields of history, anthropology, sociology, Irish studies, diaspora studies, and cultural studies. The volume thematically explores how St. Patrick’s Day has been consumed from the symbolic to the literal, the religious to the political. By doing so, it offers a fresh examination of its importance in contemporary society. This volume will thus appeal to undergraduate and postgraduate students of Irish diaspora studies, and Irish historians and scholars, as well as to anthropology, sociology and cultural studies students interested in exploring St. Patrick’s Day as a case study of globalization, migration and commoditization.

Book excerpt: Saint Patrick is known worldwide as the patron saint of Ireland and is honored on the 17th of March every year as part of the St. Patrick's Day celebration. While it is widely celebrated as a cultural holiday, many people do not know much about the man behind the celebrations. Saint Patrick was born in Britain to a wealthy family in the 4th century. His life changed after he was kidnapped by Irish raiders and brought to Ireland as a slave at the age of 16. After six years of captivity, Saint Patrick escaped and eventually made his way back to Britain where he became a Christian missionary. Saint Patrick then returned to Ireland as a missionary, where he traveled the country and converted many people, built churches, and established monasteries. His approach was not confrontational but rather focused on compassion and love for the people he served. Over the centuries, his stories of miracles and conversions have become part of Irish folklore, and his influence on Irish culture has secured his place in history as a beloved symbol of the country. To this day, many people honor Saint Patrick as the patron saint of Ireland, and the feast day celebrating his life and legacy is one of the most widely celebrated holidays across the world. Overall, Saint Patrick's religious knowledge and love for the people of Ireland made an enormous impact on the country. The teachings of Saint Patrick, along with a mixture of Celtic and Roman Catholic traditions, created a unique meld of Irish culture, which has had a far-reaching effect on people's way of life. Book The Ruthwell Cross and its Texts

Download or read book The Ruthwell Cross and its Texts written by Kerstin Majewski and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2022-10-24 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Ruthwell Cross is one of the finest Anglo-Saxon high crosses that have come down to us. The longest epigraphic text in the Old English Runes Corpus is inscribed on two sides of the monument: it forms an alliterative poem, in which the Cross itself narrates the crucifixion episode. Parts of the inscription are irrevocably lost. This study establishes a historico-cultural context for the Ruthwell Cross’s texts and sculptures. It shows that The Ruthwell Crucifixion Poem is an integral part of a Christian artefact but also an independent text. Although its verses match closely with lines of The Dream of the Rood in the Vercelli Book, a comparative analysis gives new insight into their complex relationship. An annotated transliteration of the runes offers intriguing information for runologists. Detailed linguistic and metrical analyses finally yield a new reconstruction of the lost runes. All in all, this study takes a fresh look at the Ruthwell Cross and provides the first scholarly edition of the reconstructed Ruthwell Crucifixion Poem—one of the earliest religious poems of Anglo-Saxon England. It will be of interest to scholars and students of historical linguistics, medieval English literature and culture, art history, and archaeology.
