Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Creighton Chronicle, Vol. 9: Oct. 20, 1917 Just prior to registration day it was remarkable in some instances how men suddenly changed ages. Several Russian Jews had taken out their naturalization papers in our District Court and had given a certain age, but at the time of the regis tration they had proof to show that they were much older, which would put them beyond the age of 31. One fellow told how he had asked a certain girl to marry him and she replied that he was too old, so in getting the marriage license, he said that he set back his age about eight years. The Federal authorities made a ruling that collateral records of age would be taken as the correct age. Several young men had given their age as 21 or more in order to obtain positions with the Street Railway Company and other corporations, but when it came to being drafted they were quick to deny that they were really men. There were a few men who failed to register on June 5th, who had a notion that they could escape. They soon learned that Uncle Sam was much better prepared to carry out his plans than they had ever dreamed of, and gradually they came in to register or sent in their registration cards. The fathers and mothers, whose sons were registered, were vigilant in seeing that all their neighbors' sons were registered Publication by newspapers of lists of the men registered proved a great help to the government. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Creighton Chronicle, Vol. 9: April 20, 1918 The forty-eight hours at the Aisne home can be spent in sleep if the man so desires, but the forty-eight hours at the paste may allow twenty hours of sleep, one hour of sleep, and maybe no hours of sleep. It all depends on the number of wound ed and the activity along the front - one of the fronts 65 was on meant forty-eight hours of steady work; that front was the Chemin des Dames. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Creighton Chronicle, Vol. 10: May 20, 1919 That a good man may have a bad title and, conversely, that a worthless man may have a good title to property, has been demonstrated so frequently, in and out of the court room, that, in these days, the personal element may be considered as climi hated from the consideration of titles. It is never safe now to assume that a title to land is free from defects. Irregularities and imperfections of title may arise in so many ways, either by some act, or failure to act, of the pres ent or some past owner, or by operation of law, that common prudence requires a close scrutiny of the history of ownership of the property from the government grant down to the present time. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Creighton Chronicle, Vol. 9: Jan. 20, 1918 There is something grotesque in the fairly common estimate of Shaw as an immoral writer who is intellectually impregnable; when, as a matter of fact, he has the highest moral purpose, but a defective mental vision, a defective vision, though by no means an utter lack of vision; just as there are myopic men whose eyesight will not serve to keep them from walking off into the gutters or bumping into other pedestrians, yet who can discover flaws in a diamond if held just before their noses. The really pathetic thing about Shaw is that, knowing his moral pur pose to be excellent, he insists also that his vision is the only normal one, whilst all the rest of men are abnormal. This is not the last word in explanation of him: only God knows that ex planation completely. And even to understand this partial ex planation we must consider a few of the many facts which Shaw has so generously placed at the disposal of his critics. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Creighton Chronicle, Vol. 9: Nov. 20, 1917 The life of those in the Hospital Corps of the Navy is not a monotonous one. It is healthful and, to the average phar macist, is more to be desired than life in the Army, under the present system. If the recruit has enlisted in the Army, he will be assigned to the Medical Corps and sent to one of the military training hospitals. There the work is similar to that in the Navy, with duties even more of the character of nursing than of dispensing. After an indefinite period of training at the hospital, the recruit, rated as Private, is sent to one of the larger military hospitals in the United States or to one of the base hospitals abroad. Some of the Pharmacists who enlisted in the Army in May of this year, have already reached the base medical supply depots in France. At present, the recognition of the qualifications of the train ed pharmacist is not commensurate with that accorded in the professions of medicine, dentistry, and veterinary medicine. However, an improvement in this regard is expected in the near future. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Creighton Chronicle, Vol. 1: February 15, 1910 The situation is complicated still further by the fact of our dual form of government. When the constitution of the United States was written, it was found necessary, on account of the relations between the original states, to limit the grant of power to the central government, and among the powers conferred which were so limited, was the con trol over commerce. The constitution expressly declares that Congress shall have full authority over commerce be tween the states, and thereby excludes from its control the very large internal commerce of the several states which does not pass their borders. Each sovereign state, there fore, assumes the right to regulate its internal commerce and most of them have exercised that right by the enactment of regulatory statutes along the lines of the Federal laws. Some states have gone far beyond anything that Congress has yet attempted, while other states have not availed them selves of all the powers which they undoubtedly possess. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Creighton Chronicle, Vol. 12: December 20, 1920 To look at him one would hardly have believed that he 'had seen better days - days when his suit was new, his ragged trous ers neatly pressed, his rusty shoes well polished, andthe shapeless hat, now on his head, had just the proper number of dents. As he sat dozing before the warming fire, memories of boyhood Christmas times came crowding back through the years. His pipe sagged between his relaxed lips, and just as he was on the verge of slumbering, the bushes to his right were cautiously parted and' another individual, Whose misfortune seemingly paralleled his own, stepped hesitatingly into the small clearing. Book The Washingtons Volume 9

Download or read book The Washingtons Volume 9 written by Justin Glenn and published by Savas Publishing. This book was released on 2016-10-06 with total page 671 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the ninth volume of a comprehensive history that traces the “Presidential Line” of the Washingtons. Volume one began with the immigrant John Washington who settled in Westmoreland Co., Va., in 1657, married Anne Pope, and was the great-grandfather of President George Washington. It contained the record of their descendants for a total of seven generations. Subsequent volumes two through eight continued this family history for an additional eight generations, highlighting most notable members (volume two) and tracing lines of descent from the royalty and nobility of England and continental Europe (volume three). Volume nine collects over 8,500 descendants of the recently discovered line of William Wright (died in Franklin Co., Va., ca. 1809). It also provides briefer accounts of five other early Wright families of Virginia that have often been mentioned by researchers as close kinsmen of George Washington, including: William Wright (died in Fauquier Co., Va., ca. 1805), Frances Wright and her husband Nimrod Ashby, and William Wright (died in Greensville Co., Va., by 1827). A cumulative index will complete the series as volume ten.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Creighton Chronicle, Vol. 1: March 15, 1910 The foregoing are some of the good points commonly adduced in favor of the Credit System. However, it is far from being regarded by educators with unqualified approbation. Experience seems to show, that, when applied on an extensive scale, this system breaks down and fails to furnish university officials with the only assurance worth having. In other words, under the technicalities of credit points and semester hours, a great number of candi dates altogether unfit, may be, and in many instances are, admitted to university courses. This failure, it is asserted, is owing to defects, hard to eliminate from the system. Many refer, for example, to the tendency, which again and again manifests itself in the credit system, of laying greater stress upon the length of time devoted to subjects than the grade of excellence attained. Moreover, it is difficult, under this system, to maintain a uniform level of excellence, because the task of assigning grades devolves upon a legion of teachers in the various high schools and academies. Finally, it is pointed out, that in schools where the field of electivism is fairly ample, credits, which total up evenly, may represent widely different values. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Creighton Chronicle, Vol. 6: October 20, 1914 Here another stage-coach picks you up, a trifle more loose j ointed and weather-beaten than the French one, with a pair of jumpy Spanish mules in the harness, and a Spanish Basque, who might have sat for Sancho Panza, handling the reins. I ventured a word to him of the Battle of Roncesvalles. But he said he knew little about it, as it happened years ago; even be fore his grandfather's time, he thought. All he knew was that Carlo Magno and the French got a great drubbing there, and that the Basques taught all Frenchmen to keep out of Navarre.
