Download or read book Experimental evaluation of stress concentration and intensity factors written by George C. Sih and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 407 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experiments on fracture of materials are made for various purposes. Of primary importance are those through which criteria predicting material failure by deformation and/or fracture are investigated. Since the demands of engineering application always precede the development of theories, there is another kind of experiment where conditions under which a particular material can fail are simulated as closely as possible to the operational situation but in a simplified and standardized form. In this way, many of the parameters corresponding to fracture such as toughness, Charpy values, crack opening distance (COD), etc. are measured. Obviously, a sound knowledge of the physical theories governing material failure is necessary as the quantity of interest can seldom be evaluated in a direct manner. Critical stress intensity factors and critical energy release rates are examples. Standard test of materials should be distinguished from basic experi ments. They are performed to provide routine information on materials responding to certain conditions of loading or environment. The tension test with or without a crack is among one of the most widely used tests. Because they affect the results, with size and shape of the specimen, the rate of loading, temperature and crack configuration are standardized to enable comparison and reproducibility of results. The American Society for Testing Materials (ASTM) provides a great deal of information on recommended procedures and methods of testing. The objective is to standardize specifications for materials and definition of technical terms.
Download or read book Photoelasticity written by Masataka Nisida and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thirty-five papers were presented at the International Symposium on Photoelasticity, Tokyo, 1986, representing fifty-five authors. Eighteen of these papers were presented by Japanese photoelasticians and seventeen by leading foreign authorities from eleven countries (Austria, Canada, Czechoslovakia, F.R. of Germany, France, Greece, India, Switzerland, UK, USA and USSR) • This is the first symposium on photoelasticity of international scope held in Japan. The primary objectives of this symposium are to help bridge the gap between photoelastic researchers around the world, to promote mutual understanding and communications and to facilitate exchange of newly acquired knowledge in theories and techniques. In addition, it is important that these valuable results are communicated effectively to engineers who can apply them in practice in industry. The papers presented at this symposium cover all branches of photo elasticity in a broad sense, including, in addition to long estab lished photoelasticity, newly developed moire, interferometric, and holographic photoelasticity, caustics and speckle. Therefore, from an optical stress analysis pe~spective, this volume is the latest compre hensive collection of photoelastic expertises.

Download or read book Crack Dynamics in Metallic Materials written by J.R. Klepaczko and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-05-04 with total page 499 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an up-to-date knowledge on theory and experimental results of rate-dependent fracture processes in metallic materials. The objective is to expose the current status of a growing branch of fracture mechanics called generally "Dynamic Fracture". Crack dynamics takes into account not only the effects of inertia but also rate sensitivity of a material under consideration. This volume has been prepared by four leading authorities in fracture dynamics: D.R. Curran, J.F. Kalthoff, J.R. Klepaczko and F. Nilsson. A broad range of problem is covered: dynamic fracture theory, application of dynamic fracture mechanics, dynamic crack inition and microstatistical fracture mechanics in dynamic fracture. The book in its present format may serve as a text supplement in lecturing on fracture mechanics. On the other hand, it may serve as an instructional aid in engineering of fracture prevention.

Download or read book Essays on Skepticism written by Anthony Brueckner and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2010-08-19 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The problem of skepticism about knowledge of the external world has been the centrepiece of epistemology since Descartes. In the last 25 years, there has been a keen focus of interest on the problem, with a number of new insights by the best contemporary epistemologists and philosophers of mind. Anthony Brueckner is recognized as one of the leading contemporary investigators of the problem of skepticism. Essays on Skepticism collects Brueckner's most important work in this area, providing a connected and comprehensive guide to the complex state of play on this intensively studied area of philosophy. The guiding questions of this volume are: Can we have knowledge of the external world of things outside our minds? Can we have knowledge of the internal world of our own contentful mental states? The work divides into four sections: I. Transcendental Arguments against Skepticism; II. Semantic Answers to Skepticism; III. Self-knowledge; IV. Skepticism and Epistemic Closure.
Download or read book Exploring the Crack in the Cosmic Egg written by Joseph Chilton Pearce and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2014-02-15 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The classic follow-up to the bestselling The Crack in the Cosmic Egg • Explains the process of acculturation and the mechanisms that create our self-limiting “cosmic egg” of consensus reality • Reveals how our biological development innately creates a “crack” in our cosmic egg--leaving a way to return to the unencumbered consciousness of childhood • Explores ways to discover and explore the “crack” to restore wholeness to our minds and reestablish our ability to create our own realities In this classic follow-up to his bestselling The Crack in the Cosmic Egg, Joseph Chilton Pearce explains the process of acculturation and the mechanisms that create our self-limiting “cosmic egg” of consensus reality. Laying the groundwork for his later classic Magical Child, Pearce shows that we go through early childhood connecting with the world through our senses. With the development of language and the process of acculturation not only do our direct experiences of the world become much less vivid but our innate states of nonordinary consciousness become suppressed. Trapped in a specific cultural context--a “cosmic egg”--we are no longer able to have or even recognize mystical experiences not mediated by the limitations of our culture. Motivated primarily by a fear of death, our enculturation literally splits our minds and prevents us from living fully in the present. Drawing from Carlos Castaneda’s writings about Don Juan and the sense of “body-knowing,” Pearce explores the varieties of nonordinary consciousness that can help us return to the unencumbered consciousness of our infancy. He shows that just as we each create our own cosmic egg of reality through cultural conditioning, we also innately create a “crack” in that egg. Ultimately certain shifts in our biological development take place to offset acculturation, leaving an avenue of return to our primary state. Pearce examines the creation of the “egg” itself and ways to discover its inherent cracks to restore wholeness to our minds, release us from our fear of death, and reestablish our ability to create our own realities through imagination and biological transcendence.
Download or read book A Shadow S Lullaby written by E. Rexer and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2013-04-30 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I always thought I knew where my path would take me. As an orphan there weren't many options and as a mage there were even less. I would live out the rest of my life as a healing mage, taking care of the same people I have always known. But then he came and suddenly a new path appeared, offered by my mentor. This path offered a way out of the small town I grew up in and my uneventful life. This path, though promising, was a dangerous path. It would force me to decide between my old friends and a new friend, between the life I knew I would have and a life unknown. Lance had always been there for me, a friend when I needed it, but never promising what I wanted. Silas saw me when I thought I was nothing, just a failure at being mage, always overshadowed by Lance. He made me feel special, like I had a reason to be here. Lance was the path I knew so well, the path that had been plotted out. Silas's path was winding and curving, every step and turn was a secret I could unlock. His was the path I took, lured towards it by the song no one else could hear.
