Book Navigating the COVID 19 Storm

Download or read book Navigating the COVID 19 Storm written by Margarita Debuque-Gonzales and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Philippines entered its deepest recession in post-war history in 2020, with output declining by 9.6 percent. Coming up with a strategy on how to best manage the economy and deal with the fallout of the public health shock, especially on the weaker segments of society, became the biggest challenge of the country's economic policymakers. This chapter/paper looks more closely at that episode, dissecting the macroeconomic impact of the coronavirus, viewing it up close through its impact on households and firms, and then chronicling and reviewing the macroeconomic policy responses of government. It ends by summarizing the lessons to carry and the options on the path forward - for the near future - as the country continues to struggle with the pandemic, and for when it enters a more normalized (post-pandemic) world.

This literature review examines and discusses the issues facing the Philippine economy, such as the decline in Gross Domestic Product, inflation, unemployment, digital divide, corruption, and poverty, as well as the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. This persistent problem in the country has resulted in social unrest and political instability. Book Strategies and Challenges of Small scale Online Food Businesses in the Philippines

Download or read book Strategies and Challenges of Small scale Online Food Businesses in the Philippines written by Anna Marie Sales Phillipneris and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research examines the Philippine context, particularly Metro Manila and surrounding regions, during the pandemic which made it possible for budding entrepreneurs to come up with new initiatives like online food business operations by which they could earn an income despite difficult circumstances, and for consumers to purchase meals more conveniently.A survey, divided into six sections, was prepared and sent out to several small-scale food business establishments that operate in the Philippines. Majority of the respondents were female (84%), aged 26 years old and above (96%), with an average total income less than Php 100,000 (US $ 2,000) (68%), and are based in the National Capital Region (NCR) Metro, in the cities Manila and Quezon City.Based on the anchor points used in this research, the analysis is divided into three main sections: 1) Needs: needs of consumers and entrepreneurs, 2) Interventions: interventions of consumers and entrepreneurs aimed at fulfilling these needs, and 3) Evaluation of the effects of these interventions. This study looked at some of these small e-commerce food businesses in the Philippine setting, in order to understand their operational structures, strategies and challenges, and analyzed them with the usage of time-tested analytical models. It was done so not merely with the providing appropriate recommendations for their future operation and growth-oriented undertakings, but also to add to the evolving literature on the impacts and repercussions of COVID-19 crisis that has rocked the world.

Book Economic Situation and Public Spending During the COVID 19 Pandemic

Download or read book Economic Situation and Public Spending During the COVID 19 Pandemic written by Jeffrey Salvilla and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study aims to examine how public spending affects economic growth during the COVID-19 period in the Philippines. The overall design of the research study on the economic situation and public spending during the COVID-19 Pandemic is based on related literature, related studies, empirical studies, and research evidence to get the outcome and state of the economy. The Philippine growth had tapered off to only under six percent until the 2020 pandemic hit the country. Economic theory would suggest that, on some occasions, lower levels of state spending would enhance the economic process, while on other occasions, higher levels of state spending would be more desirable. One of the main economic sectors, agriculture, forestry, fishing, industry, and services all posted growth within the fourth quarter with 1.4 percent, 9.5 percent, and 7.9 percent, respectively. The study results under the Development Budget Coordination Committee state that the Philippine economy continued its strong growth momentum at 6.0 percent in 2019. The examination under the report of the International Labor Organization (2020) is about the multidimensional impact on employment and the labor market that provides an account of the evolution of COVID-19 within the Philippines and its economic impact within the first half of 2020. This is the evidence that shows the economic situation and public spending during the COVID-19 pandemic. From this paper, the attempts by the Philippine government to reply to COVID-19 closely followed the trail of a classic market-driven economic recovery. It viewed the crisis as a short-lived setback for aggregate demand and not a systemic market failure. Through dialogue and concerted action by governments, employers, and worker's organizations, policies and programs can be designed and implemented to deal with the immediate health crisis and to mitigate the effects of some of these measures on employment and incomes.

Book COVID 19 MSMEs Policy Responses in the Philippines

Download or read book COVID 19 MSMEs Policy Responses in the Philippines written by Paul John Mendoza Peña and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on the experiences of entrepreneurs during the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, we explore the gendered impacts of policy responses designed primarily to provide relief and support for business continuity while the economy was on hold. The paper examines the themes of their lived experiences and how policy responses catered to their immediate needs as entrepreneurs and assess how and whether its impacts are gendered while considering the process of policy design, implementation, and monitoring during an emergency. As needs at the onset of the pandemic were universal and under pressure to deliver relief efforts in an emergency, policies did not explicitly bear a gender lens from design to implementation. The effects of the pandemic on businesses were not gendered, although the lived experiences of women entrepreneurs reveal areas where more gendered support is needed. The paper also explores the lack of consensus among players in the entrepreneurial ecosystem on how women's entrepreneurship is defined and investigates how this affects the monitoring and evaluation of policy responses for micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises. The paper also looks into tech startups and provides recommendations moving forward.

Book Asian Development Outlook 2020

Download or read book Asian Development Outlook 2020 written by Asian Development Bank and published by Asian Development Bank. This book was released on 2020-04-01 with total page 737 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After a disappointing 2019, growth prospects in developing Asia have worsened under the impact of the current health crisis. Signs of incipient recovery near the turn of this year were quickly overthrown as COVID-19 broke out in January 2020 in the region’s largest economy and subsequently expanded into a global pandemic. Disruption to regional and global supply chains, trade, and tourism, and the continued spread of the outbreak, leave the region reeling under massive economic shocks and financial turmoil. Across Asia, the authorities are responding with policies to contain the outbreak, facilitate medical interventions, and support vulnerable businesses and households. Assuming that the outbreak is contained this year, growth is expected to recover in 2021. Especially to face down fundamental threats such as the current medical emergency, innovation is critical to growth and development. As some economies in developing Asia challenge the innovation frontier, many others lag. More and better innovation is needed in the region to sustain growth that is more inclusive and environmentally sustainable. Five key drivers of innovation are sound education, productive entrepreneurship, high-quality institutions, efficient financial systems, and dynamic cities that excite knowledge exchange. The journey to creating an innovative society takes long-term commitment and hard work.

The researchers gathered and reviewed related literature using keyword and database searches to locate relevant studies and articles. Book Global Productivity

Download or read book Global Productivity written by Alistair Dieppe and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2021-06-09 with total page 552 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The COVID-19 pandemic struck the global economy after a decade that featured a broad-based slowdown in productivity growth. Global Productivity: Trends, Drivers, and Policies presents the first comprehensive analysis of the evolution and drivers of productivity growth, examines the effects of COVID-19 on productivity, and discusses a wide range of policies needed to rekindle productivity growth. The book also provides a far-reaching data set of multiple measures of productivity for up to 164 advanced economies and emerging market and developing economies, and it introduces a new sectoral database of productivity. The World Bank has created an extraordinary book on productivity, covering a large group of countries and using a wide variety of data sources. There is an emphasis on emerging and developing economies, whereas the prior literature has concentrated on developed economies. The book seeks to understand growth patterns and quantify the role of (among other things) the reallocation of factors, technological change, and the impact of natural disasters, including the COVID-19 pandemic. This book is must-reading for specialists in emerging economies but also provides deep insights for anyone interested in economic growth and productivity. Martin Neil Baily Senior Fellow, The Brookings Institution Former Chair, U.S. President’s Council of Economic Advisers This is an important book at a critical time. As the book notes, global productivity growth had already been slowing prior to the COVID-19 pandemic and collapses with the pandemic. If we want an effective recovery, we have to understand what was driving these long-run trends. The book presents a novel global approach to examining the levels, growth rates, and drivers of productivity growth. For anyone wanting to understand or influence productivity growth, this is an essential read. Nicholas Bloom William D. Eberle Professor of Economics, Stanford University The COVID-19 pandemic hit a global economy that was already struggling with an adverse pre-existing condition—slow productivity growth. This extraordinarily valuable and timely book brings considerable new evidence that shows the broad-based, long-standing nature of the slowdown. It is comprehensive, with an exceptional focus on emerging market and developing economies. Importantly, it shows how severe disasters (of which COVID-19 is just the latest) typically harm productivity. There are no silver bullets, but the book suggests sensible strategies to improve growth prospects. John Fernald Schroders Chaired Professor of European Competitiveness and Reform and Professor of Economics, INSEAD

Book Impacts of COVID 19 on Firms in the Philippines

Download or read book Impacts of COVID 19 on Firms in the Philippines written by Weltbank and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The findings are based on the survey of 13,878 firms conducted from November 26 to December 10, 2020, to assess the impacts of COVID-19 on firms. This survey builds on a government survey in April 2020 and the World Bank-government joint survey in July 2020, both of which benefit from a large sample size and present a nationwide representative snapshot of firms in the Philippines. Easing of the community quarantine has led to more businesses reopening (63 percent in November vs. 45 percent in July), but with only a small proportion operating at full capacity (9 percent). While some managers closed businesses in compliance with government regulation (9 percent), others voluntarily closed their businesses (21 percent) despite eased community quarantines. About 7 percent of firms reported to have closed permanently. Reduction in sales has continued for firms. 67 percent of firms reported a reduction in sales between July and November 2020, compared to 88 percent between April and July 2020. The main reason for decreased sales is limited operation (58 percent) and inability of customers to come to establishments (38 percent). Downward adjustments of employment continued in November 2020 (38 percent), albeit at a slower pace than in July 2020 (50 percent). Significant shares of firms also made adjustments on the intensive margin, reducing hours (19 percent) and wages (16 percent). Only 3 percent of firms hired new employees. A large share of firms reported acute liquidity constraints, with reports of not having enough cash and having fallen behind in payments. 66 percent of firms did not have enough cash to pay all costs and payments such as payroll, suppliers, taxes or loan repayment beyond 1 month. Two thirds of firms had adjusted loan repayment terms, and 48 percent of firms were in arrears, with an additional 29 percent expecting to be in arrears by February 2021. Despite firms expressing cautious optimism that sales and employment will increase over the next 3 months, many expect their financial positions to worsen.
