Book The Coveted Black and Gold

Download or read book The Coveted Black and Gold written by J. D. Lock and published by Fenestra Books. This book was released on 2004-09 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For more than 200 years, U.S. Army Rangers have earned their unrivaled reputation as the world's premier warriors with bravery, blood, and sacrifice. Being a Ranger is a function of attitude and a state of mind, as well as a matter of skills and training, and it is the mission of the U.S. Army Ranger School to meld and to fortify these attributes. Ranger School is a journey that must be taken one day at a time...and each day of that journey is captured in this book. It is the cumulative effect of each of those days, the arduous work, the deprivation, the misery, that leads to what is ultimately called "the Ranger School experience."

Download or read book Gold written by Chris Cleave and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2012-07-03 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Building on the tradition of Little Bee, Chris Cleave again writes with elegance, humor, and passion about friendship, marriage, parenthood, tragedy, and redemption. What would you sacrifice for the people you love? KATE AND ZOE met at nineteen when they both made the cut for the national training program in track cycling—a sport that demands intense focus, blinding exertion, and unwavering commitment. They are built to exploit the barest physical and psychological edge over equally skilled rivals, all of whom are fighting for the last one tenth of a second that separates triumph from despair. Now at thirty-two, the women are facing their last and biggest race: the 2012 Olympics. Each wants desperately to win gold, and each has more than a medal to lose. Kate is the more naturally gifted, but the demands of her life have a tendency to slow her down. Her eight-year-old daughter Sophie dreams of the Death Star and of battling alongside the Rebels as evil white blood cells ravage her personal galaxy—she is fighting a recurrence of the leukemia that nearly killed her three years ago. Sophie doesn’t want to stand in the way of her mum’s Olympic dreams, but each day the dark forces of the universe seem to be massing against her. Devoted and self-sacrificing Kate knows her daughter is fragile, but at the height of her last frenzied months of training, might she be blind to the most terrible prognosis? Intense, aloof Zoe has always hovered on the periphery of real human companionship, and her compulsive need to win at any cost has more than once threatened her friendship with Kate—and her own sanity. Will she allow her obsession, and the advantage she has over a harried, anguished mother, to sever the bond they have shared for more than a decade? Echoing the adrenaline-fueled rush of a race around the Velodrome track, Gold is a triumph of superbly paced, heart-in-throat storytelling. With great humanity and glorious prose, Chris Cleave examines the values that lie at the heart of our most intimate relationships, and the choices we make when lives are at stake and everything is on the line.

Book How to Pass Your Patrol and Other Tips for Earning the Black and Gold

Download or read book How to Pass Your Patrol and Other Tips for Earning the Black and Gold written by Con Creatwal and published by . This book was released on 2012-10-04 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Army Rangers are experts in leading Soldiers on difficult missions under extreme conditions; and to do this they need rigorous training. For more than two months, Ranger students train to exhaustion, pushing the limits of their minds and bodies. Those who successfully complete the training are awarded the coveted black and gold Ranger Tab. The U.S. Army's Ranger Course is one of the toughest training courses for which a Soldier can volunteer. A typical Ranger class will have a failure rate of over 50%. You can prepare for Ranger School success by: 1) Getting into top physical condition (fitness test, foot-marching, obstacle course) 2) Becoming an expert in land navigation 3) Practicing for the combat water survival assessment (swim test) Most of the failures happen in the first two weeks and are due to a lack of preparation in these three areas. After the ill prepared are weeded out, it's down to motivation/determination and academics. If you lack the motivation to endure the physical and mental hardships of the course, no amount of preparation will help. However, if you have the right attitude and are determined to become a Ranger, "How to Pass Your Patrol" will guide you through the various missions you will be evaluated on. This book was written as a sincere attempt to prepare the Ranger candidate for the real meat and potatoes of the course. At less than 100 pages, there is no fluff or filler -- just a focus on how you are measured by the instructors. Here you will learn how to make a positive impression and the things to do to get GOs on your evaluations instead of NO-GOs. Study this during your Ranger School prep and avoid the 'Gulag'. RANGERS LEAD THE WAY!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rangers, Green Berets, SEALs, Delta Force, LRRPs, Force Recon— and the struggle of the best and the bravest to keep America free They’re some of the toughest and most highly trained fighting men in the world—going where no ordinary soldier would go and doing what no ordinary soldier would dare. Outnumbered and outgunned, operating in small teams of five or six-deep in enemy territory far from help, they rely on their wits, their skills, and each other to get out alive. Blood Warriors is a penetrating, no-holds-barred account of the training, missions, and history of the military elites who mold America’s most dangerous and highly skilled warriors . . . from the navy’s SEALs and the Marine Corps’ Force Reconnaissance to the U.S. Army’s Delta Force, Rangers, and Special Forces. Here’s an in-depth look at each unit’s methods and standards: what’s required and what it takes to survive and succeed. Whether gathering intelligence, capturing prisoners, executing raids and ambushes, or just creating havoc in enemy territory, these men know that death is their constant companion—and one small misstep could mean body bags for everyone. Maybe that’s why America calls them heroes.

Book Black Gold and Blackmail

Download or read book Black Gold and Blackmail written by Rosemary A. Kelanic and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2020-05-15 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Black Gold and Blackmail seeks to explain why great powers adopt such different strategies to protect their oil access from politically motivated disruptions. In extreme cases, such as Imperial Japan in 1941, great powers fought wars to grab oil territory in anticipation of a potential embargo by the Allies; in other instances, such as Germany in the early Nazi period, states chose relatively subdued measures like oil alliances or domestic policies to conserve oil. What accounts for this variation? Fundamentally, it is puzzling that great powers fear oil coercion at all because the global market makes oil sanctions very difficult to enforce. Rosemary A. Kelanic argues that two variables determine what strategy a great power will adopt: the petroleum deficit, which measures how much oil the state produces domestically compared to what it needs for its strategic objectives; and disruptibility, which estimates the susceptibility of a state's oil imports to military interdiction—that is, blockade. Because global markets undercut the effectiveness of oil sanctions, blockade is in practice the only true threat to great power oil access. That, combined with the devastating consequences of oil deprivation to a state's military power, explains why states fear oil coercion deeply despite the adaptive functions of the market. Together, these two variables predict a state's coercive vulnerability, which determines how willing the state will be to accept the costs and risks attendant on various potential strategies. Only those great powers with large deficits and highly disruptible imports will adopt the most extreme strategy: direct control of oil through territorial conquest.

Authored by a lifetime soldier who served in combat with the 75th Ranger Regiment, this book is replete with information garnered from dozens of interviews with the individuals who created the initial Ranger Force.
