Book excerpt: Winner of the 2008 Trillium Book Award for Poetry Write for buyers. Write for bosses. Think hyper. Think branding. Tell your visitor where to go. Poetry and 'plain language' collide in the writing machine that is Human Resources . Here at the intersection of creation and repackaging, we experience the visceral and psychic cost of selling things with depleted words. Pilfered rhetorics fed into the machine are spit out as bungled associations among money, shit, culture, work and communication. With the help of online engines that numericize language, Human Resources explores writing as a process of encryption. Deeply inflected by the polyvocality and encoded rhetorics of the screen, Human Resources is perched at the limits of language, irreverently making and breaking meaning. Navigating the crumbling boundaries among page, screen, reader, engine, writer and database, Human Resources investigates wasting words and words as waste - and the creative potential of salvage. 'In this bad-mouthing and incandescent burlesque, Rachel Zolf transforms a necessary social anger into the pure fuel that takes us to "the beautiful excess of the unshackled referent." We learn something new about guts, and about how dictions slip across one another, entwining, shimmering, wisecracking. For Zolf, political invention takes precedent, works the search engine.' - Lisa Robertson

Book Of Things Unseen and Other Poems

Download or read book Of Things Unseen and Other Poems written by Lee Bain Chiaro and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2002-11 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the result of the author's search for Truth and the meaning of Life. After the loss of her family in the Holocaust of World War II, and later divorce, she found no comfort or comforter for her grief. She then began to pour out her pain through poetry. Although she began writing at age twelve, when she became fluent in English, this book is a compilation of only the past forty years of her writings. Her soul-search began in 1961, at which time she produced several sonnets. One sonnet in particular, Celestial Lapidary, revealed to her a startling message from God: that our suffering serves an ennobling purpose. This breakthrough enabled her to persevere. In 1965 she met her Jewish Messiah, Jesus, through the reading of The New Testament given her by a kind friend. Thereafter, the poems reflect her deep devotion to The God of All Comfort who gave her the Love and Hope to live an overcoming and victorious life. In 1996 she began to share publicly her Scriptural teachings, as well as the poems which they had inspired. She continues to do so to the present.

Download or read book The Math Campers written by Dan Chiasson and published by Knopf. This book was released on 2020-09-22 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A father and husband's meditation on love, adolescence, and the mysterious mechanisms of poetic creation, from the acclaimed poet. The poet's art is revealed in stages in this "making-of" book, where we watch as poems take shape--first as dreams or memories, then as drafts, and finally as completed works set loose on the world. In the long poem "Must We Mean What We Say," a woman reader narrates in prose the circumstances behind poems and snippets of poems she receives in letters from a stranger. Who made up whom? Chiasson, an acclaimed poetry critic, has invented a remarkable structure where the reader and a poet speak to one another, across the void of silence and mystery. He is also the father of teenaged sons, and this volume continues the autobiographical arc of his prior, celebrated volumes. One long section is about the age of thirteen and the dawning of desire, while the title poem looks at the crucial age of fifteen and the existential threat of climate change and gun violence, which alters the calculus of adolescence. Though the outlook is bleak, these poems register the glories of our moment: that there are places where boys can kiss each other and not be afraid; that small communities are rousing and taking care of each other; that teenagers have mobilized for a better world. All of these works emerge from the secretive imagination of a father as he measures his own adolescence against that of his sons and explores the complex bedrock of marriage. Chiasson sees a perilous world both navigated and enriched by the passionate young and by the parents--and poets--who care for them.

Book excerpt: Nathaniel Hawthorne pens a new tale to exact revenge on his ancestor, a notorious judge of the Salem witch trials Best known for his novel The Scarlet Letter, Nathaniel Hawthorne was burdened by familial shame, which began with his great-great-grandfather John Hathorne, the infamously unrepentant Salem witch trial judge. In this, the eighth stand-alone book in The American Novels series, we witness Hawthorne writing a tale entitled Tooth of the Covenant, in which he sends his fictional surrogate, Isaac Page, back to the year 1692 to save Bridget Bishop, the first person executed for witchcraft, and rescue the other victims from execution. But when Page puts on Hathorne’s spectacles, his worldview is transformed and he loses his resolve. As he battles his conscience, he finds that it is his own life hanging in the balance. An ingenious and profound investigation into the very notion of universal truth and morality, Tooth of the Covenant probes storytelling’s depths to raise history’s dead and assuage the persistent ghost of guilt.
