Book excerpt: Excerpt from The County and City of Cork Remembrancer, or Annals of the County and City of Cork The design of the following work was suggested by former publications of a similar character; in 1783 Mr. J.fitzgerald published the first Cork Remembrancer in 1792, Mr. A. Edwards published the second the present attempt is the third. 'v e believe our city has furnished the only examples of such compilations. Indeed our predecessors in this path, accompanied their local anecdotes with a general chronicle of the world, which, however, we have rejected from our plan, as being rather inappropriate. Our book is therefore, for the most part, a mere collection of tri ing incidents, which occurred in the city and county of Cork 3 but frivolous as the facts detailed, may appear to many, they often present more vivid images of other times, than graver details 5 similar trifles of our own time find their places in the newspapers, and are allowed to be, at least, amusing and although those of other times lose part of their attractions by their remoteness, they yet derive from the same source, an interest of another kind, and may well claim a compiler's labour. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ancient and Present State of the County and City of Cork, Vol. 1 of 2: Containing a Natural, Civil, Ecclesiastical, Historical, and Topographical Description Thereof If we cannot, like Italy or Holland, boast of the beauties of art, and improvements of planting and building in this count we may, at least, present our readers with natura beauties, no less pleasing and attractive. It is a true piece of wisdom in any state, by the magnificence of its public structures, by a neatness and symmetry in its private ones, which may atone for splendour and orna ment, and by adorning towns with pleasant and regular plantations ot trees, and public walks, to invite travellers to some and see them. There are few countries but what have instituted great marts or fairs and contrived, by extraordinary public shews, to draw a concourse of people to them, from the neighbouring, and remote nations; whose very travelling and intercourse, increase? Wealth and trade, and are a secret motive to people to inhabita country, where they may meet with more entertainment than at home. Such were the Greek olym-f pie games, which drewctogether a prodigious concourse of people from all parts; and where a simple wreath, only, was the reward of the victor; which made Tyoranes, (2) a Persian commander, cry to his general.
