Book The Council in Question

Download or read book The Council in Question written by Moyra Doorly and published by TAN Books. This book was released on 2013-03-28 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The resurgence of Catholic tradition is rekindling devotion, zeal and, we pray, sanctity. But do some place traditionalism before Mother Church herself? This is the issue of our time, a unique time, 50 years after Vatican II when much (though not all) of the misapplication of the Council's teachings and liturgical aberrations have settled. In The Council in Question, journalist Moyra Doorly, an SSPX attendee, and Dominican Aidan Nichols vibrantly discuss the key issues of division between the Church and the Society. A must-read for a lover of Tradition!

Book excerpt: Winner of the John Gilmary Shea Prize The Council of Trent (1545–1563), the Catholic Church’s attempt to put its house in order in response to the Protestant Reformation, has long been praised and blamed for things it never did. Now, in this first full one-volume history in modern times, John W. O’Malley brings to life the volatile issues that pushed several Holy Roman emperors, kings and queens of France, and five popes—and all of Europe with them—repeatedly to the brink of disaster. During the council’s eighteen years, war and threat of war among the key players, as well as the Ottoman Turks’ onslaught against Christendom, turned the council into a perilous enterprise. Its leaders declined to make a pronouncement on war against infidels, but Trent’s most glaring and ironic silence was on the authority of the papacy itself. The popes, who reigned as Italian monarchs while serving as pastors, did everything in their power to keep papal reform out of the council’s hands—and their power was considerable. O’Malley shows how the council pursued its contentious parallel agenda of reforming the Church while simultaneously asserting Catholic doctrine. Like What Happened at Vatican II, O’Malley’s Trent: What Happened at the Council strips mythology from historical truth while providing a clear, concise, and fascinating account of a pivotal episode in Church history. In celebration of the 450th anniversary of the council’s closing, it sets the record straight about the much misunderstood failures and achievements of this critical moment in European history.

Book The Second Vatican Council on Other Religions

Download or read book The Second Vatican Council on Other Religions written by Gerald O'Collins and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2013-03-28 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many observers greeted the Second Vatican Council (1962-65) as the most important religious event in the twentieth century. Its implementation and impact are still being felt in the Catholic Church, the wider Christian world, and beyond. One sea change that Vatican II brought concerned Roman Catholic attitudes towards Judaism, Islam, and other religions. Gerald O'Collins breaks fresh ground by examining in detail five documents from the Council which embodied a new mindset about other religious faiths and mandated changes that quickly led to international and national dialogues between the Catholic Church and the followers of non-Christian religions. The book also includes chapters on the insights that prepared the way for the rethinking expressed by Vatican II, and on the follow-up to the Council's teaching found in the work of Pope John Paul II and Jacques Dupuis. O'Collins ably illustrates how the Council made a startling advance in official Catholic teaching about followers of other living faiths. Carefully researched, the book is written in the clear, accessible style that readers of previous works by O'Collins will recognize.

Book Citizens at the centre

    Book Details:
  • Author : Davies, Celia
  • Publisher : Policy Press
  • Release : 2006-10-04
  • ISBN : 1847421679
  • Pages : 305 pages

Download or read book Citizens at the centre written by Davies, Celia and published by Policy Press. This book was released on 2006-10-04 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Involving citizens in policy decision-making processes - deliberative democracy - has been a central goal of the Labour government since it came to power in 1997. But what happens when members of the public are drawn into unfamiliar debate, with unfamiliar others, in the unfamiliar world of policy making at national level? This book sets out to understand the contribution that citizens can realistically be expected to make. Drawing on the lessons from an ethnographic study of a public involvement initiative in the health service - the Citizens Council of NICE (National Institute for Clinical Excellence) - the book explores the practical realities behind the much-quoted faith in 'deliberation' that underpins so many models of public involvement and presents the analysis of sixty four hours of video and audiotape capturing a warts-and-all picture of deliberation in action. It sets deliberative participatory initiatives within a broad inter-disciplinary context and challenges politicians, policy-makers and academics to develop more realistic approaches to democratic innovation. Citizens at the centre will be of interest to academics and students in social policy, sociology, politics, health, social care, economics, and public administration and management. It will also be valuable to anyone involved in the policy making process, not only in the UK, but also in Europe, the USA and other countries where deliberative democracy is being implemented or discussed.
