Book The cost of transporting cereals in West Africa

Download or read book The cost of transporting cereals in West Africa written by Mercier, Stephanie and published by Intl Food Policy Res Inst. This book was released on 2018-09-14 with total page 41 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examines transportation alternatives for moving cereals into position for storage under the West African Food Security Regional Reserve agreed to by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in 2013, for which cereals were first procured in 2017. It describes the reserve’s management structure and rules for procuring commodities, both types of cereals and preferred sourcing for those purchases. The study identified countries within the 15-nation ECOWAS region where the desired types of cereals are available, and recent sources for imported rice, which is a preferred staple food in ECOWAS member countries even though the region is far from self-sufficient in this commodity. Despite the poor quality of roads and commercial trucks in much of West Africa and the official and unofficial barriers to movement of products across national borders, surface transportation of cereal shipments is determined to be the most economical mode of transportation for servicing the stockholding facilities of the regional reserve for goods originating within the continent. Significant investments are scheduled to be made in railroads that cross national borders within West Africa, as well as in infrastructure for river transport, including inland port facilities and improving navigable channels in key regional river systems, but those modes are not yet viable alternatives to road transport for most of the West Africa region.

Book Lost Crops of Africa

Download or read book Lost Crops of Africa written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1996-02-14 with total page 405 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scenes of starvation have drawn the world's attention to Africa's agricultural and environmental crisis. Some observers question whether this continent can ever hope to feed its growing population. Yet there is an overlooked food resource in sub-Saharan Africa that has vast potential: native food plants. When experts were asked to nominate African food plants for inclusion in a new book, a list of 30 species grew quickly to hundreds. All in all, Africa has more than 2,000 native grains and fruitsâ€""lost" species due for rediscovery and exploitation. This volume focuses on native cereals, including: African rice, reserved until recently as a luxury food for religious rituals. Finger millet, neglected internationally although it is a staple for millions. Fonio (acha), probably the oldest African cereal and sometimes called "hungry rice." Pearl millet, a widely used grain that still holds great untapped potential. Sorghum, with prospects for making the twenty-first century the "century of sorghum." Tef, in many ways ideal but only now enjoying budding commercial production. Other cultivated and wild grains. This readable and engaging book dispels myths, often based on Western bias, about the nutritional value, flavor, and yield of these African grains. Designed as a tool for economic development, the volume is organized with increasing levels of detail to meet the needs of both lay and professional readers. The authors present the available information on where and how each grain is grown, harvested, and processed, and they list its benefits and limitations as a food source. The authors describe "next steps" for increasing the use of each grain, outline research needs, and address issues in building commercial production. Sidebars cover such interesting points as the potential use of gene mapping and other "high-tech" agricultural techniques on these grains. This fact-filled volume will be of great interest to agricultural experts, entrepreneurs, researchers, and individuals concerned about restoring food production, environmental health, and economic opportunity in sub-Saharan Africa. Book Sustainable Food Security in West Africa

Download or read book Sustainable Food Security in West Africa written by W.K. Asenso-Okyere and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Food security is defined as the ability of countries, regions, or households to meet their required levels of food consumption at all times. Food security is an important component of human welfare, and it can act as an indicator of a region's development. This book addresses the roles of trade, policy development, and economic cooperation in creating sustainable food security in the West African region. The largely micro-level analysis is conducted on empirical data from the household where decisions on production and consumption take place. Food security is discussed in terms of its component parts, namely: availability of food (production and trade), its accessibility (incomes and poverty status), and its utilisation (health and nutrition).

Book Agricultural Growth Linkages in Sub Saharan Africa

Download or read book Agricultural Growth Linkages in Sub Saharan Africa written by Christopher L. Delgado and published by Intl Food Policy Res Inst. This book was released on 1998-01-01 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How much extra net income growth can be had in rural areas of Africa by increasing the spending power of local households? The answer depends on how rural households spend increments to income, whether the items desired can be imported to the local area in response to increased demand, and, if not, whether increased demand will lead to new local production or simply to price rises. For every dollar in new farm income earned, at least one additional-tional dollar could be realized from growth multipliers, according to Agricultural Growth Linkages in Sub-Saharan Africa, Research Report 107, by Christopher L. Delgado, Jane Hopkins, and Valerie A. Kelly, with Peter Hazell, Anna A. McKenna, Peter Gruhn, Behjat Hojjati, Jayashree Sil, and Claude Courbois.

At the global level, El Niño poses a risk to agricultural production and food security in several regions, particularly Southern Africa and Central America.

Book Technology and Rural Women

Download or read book Technology and Rural Women written by Iftikhar Ahmed and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-08-30 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1985, Technology and Rural Women synthesizes the fragmented empirical evidence and the wide range of theoretical approaches on the effects of modernisation on women in the developing world. Using a multi-disciplinary methodology, empirical and sectoral overviews, and country case studies, it draws together the literature to clarify the issues and the policies. The book begins with a conceptual overview and analyses the applicability of traditional theories of technological change and impact on gender based distributional questions. It proceeds to compare the African and Asian experience, examines the African situation regionally, and then as a set of four country case studies. The authors find that the imperfections of rural factor markets have contributed to women’s concentration in labour intensive sectors, marked by low productivity and low returns. Biases in the agrarian structure and the extension services are largely responsible for the Institutionalisation of discrimination against women. Finally, the volume identifies the social, economic, and technical constraints to the diffusion of technologies relevant to rural women’s tasks. In the final chapter the book’s analysis is further refined and extended, so that its conclusions to both theory and policy making are clearly brought out, and areas of future research identified. This book is an essential read for students and scholars of labour economics, women’s studies and economics in general.

Book Food Security Food Prices and Climate Variability

Download or read book Food Security Food Prices and Climate Variability written by Molly E. Brown and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-06-05 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The agriculture system is under pressure to increase production every year as global population expands and more people move from a diet mostly made up of grains, to one with more meat, dairy and processed foods. This book uses a decade of primary research to examine how weather and climate, as measured by variations in the growing season using satellite remote sensing, has affected agricultural production, food prices and access to food in food-insecure regions of the world. The author reviews environmental, economics and multidisciplinary research to describe the connection between global environmental change, changing weather conditions and local staple food price variability. The context of the analysis is the humanitarian aid community, using the guidance of the USAID Famine Early Warning Systems Network and the United Nation’s World Food Program in their response to food security crises. These organizations have worked over the past three decades to provide baseline information on food production through satellite remote sensing data and agricultural yield models, as well as assessments of food access through a food price database. These datasets are used to describe the connection, and to demonstrate the importance of these metrics in overall outcomes in food-insecure communities.
