Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three decades ago competitiveness was unheard-of; today it has taken the world by storm. But what is it? And will it last? In Top Class Competitors Stéphane Garelli - professor at IMD business school where he is also head of the World Competitiveness Centre, professor at the University of Lausanne, and former managing director of the World Economic Forum - defines competitiveness as the ability of a nation, company or individual to manage a set of disparate competencies to achieve prosperity. For instance, along with traditional policies a nation must tackle education and security to sustain economic development. Companies must manage soft issues such as brands to beat the competition. And individuals must reinvent themselves to survive. These fields of research did not exist until recently - now, competitiveness makes the link. Top Class Competitors is a journey through the brave new world of competitiveness. What are its historical origins? How does it impact the management of a nation? How do companies thrive on it in an international environment? What is the impact on work structures and value systems? Above all, is there a competitiveness mindset? Exploring how competitiveness works, Stéphane Garelli shows why competitiveness is the most powerful tool available to unleash new levels of prosperity for nations, profit for companies and success for people.

Download or read book The Fourth Industrial Revolution written by Klaus Schwab and published by Crown Currency. This book was released on 2017-01-03 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: World-renowned economist Klaus Schwab, Founder and Executive Chairman of the World Economic Forum, explains that we have an opportunity to shape the fourth industrial revolution, which will fundamentally alter how we live and work. Schwab argues that this revolution is different in scale, scope and complexity from any that have come before. Characterized by a range of new technologies that are fusing the physical, digital and biological worlds, the developments are affecting all disciplines, economies, industries and governments, and even challenging ideas about what it means to be human. Artificial intelligence is already all around us, from supercomputers, drones and virtual assistants to 3D printing, DNA sequencing, smart thermostats, wearable sensors and microchips smaller than a grain of sand. But this is just the beginning: nanomaterials 200 times stronger than steel and a million times thinner than a strand of hair and the first transplant of a 3D printed liver are already in development. Imagine “smart factories” in which global systems of manufacturing are coordinated virtually, or implantable mobile phones made of biosynthetic materials. The fourth industrial revolution, says Schwab, is more significant, and its ramifications more profound, than in any prior period of human history. He outlines the key technologies driving this revolution and discusses the major impacts expected on government, business, civil society and individuals. Schwab also offers bold ideas on how to harness these changes and shape a better future—one in which technology empowers people rather than replaces them; progress serves society rather than disrupts it; and in which innovators respect moral and ethical boundaries rather than cross them. We all have the opportunity to contribute to developing new frameworks that advance progress.

Download or read book Megaregions written by Catherine Ross and published by Island Press. This book was released on 2012-06-22 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concept of “the city” —as well as “the state” and “the nation state” —is passé, agree contributors to this insightful book. The new scale for considering economic strength and growth opportunities is “the megaregion,” a network of metropolitan centers and their surrounding areas that are spatially and functionally linked through environmental, economic, and infrastructure interactions. Recently a great deal of attention has been focused on the emergence of the European Union and on European spatial planning, which has boosted the region’s competitiveness. Megaregions applies these emerging concepts in an American context. It addresses critical questions for our future: What are the spatial implications of local, regional, national, and global trends within the context of sustainability, economic competitiveness, and social equity? How can we address housing, transportation, and infrastructure needs in growing megaregions? How can we develop and implement the policy changes necessary to make viable, livable megaregions? By the year 2050, megaregions will contain two-thirds of the U.S. population. Given the projected growth of the U.S. population and the accompanying geographic changes, this forward-looking book argues that U.S. planners and policymakers must examine and implement the megaregion as a new and appropriate framework. Contributors, all of whom are leaders in their academic and professional specialties, address the most critical issues confronting the U.S. over the next fifty years. At the same time, they examine ways in which the idea of megaregions might help address our concerns about equity, the economy, and the environment. Together, these essays define the theoretical, analytical, and operational underpinnings of a new structure that could respond to the anticipated upheavals in U.S. population and living patterns.

Download or read book Global Declining Competition written by Mr.Federico J Diez and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2019-04-26 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using a new firm-level dataset on private and listed firms from 20 countries, we document five stylized facts on market power in global markets. First, competition has declined around the world, measured as a moderate increase in average firm markups during 2000- 2015. Second, the markup increase is driven by already high-markup firms (top decile of the markup distribution) that charge increasing markups. Third, markups increased mostly among advanced economies but not in emerging markets. Fourth, there is a non-monotonic relation between firm size and markups that is first decreasing and then increasing. Finally, the increase is mostly driven by increases within incumbents and also by market share reallocation towards high-markup entrants.

The Report concludes with detailed country profiles, data presentation and an exhaustive survey of senior business executives that touches on business conditions, infrastructure, the character of the regulatory regime, the quality of government, organized labor, corruption and tax evasion. The Global Competitiveness Report 2002-2003 provides essential information for business leaders, government decision-makers and for academics to examine the critical challenges facing a multitude of the world's economies.

Download or read book Global Competitiveness written by Ajitabh and published by Excel Books India. This book was released on 2008 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Global Competitiveness is a combination of concepts, case studies and practical ways on how to achieve and enhance competitiveness in any organisation. Achieving and enhancing competitiveness will lead companies to achieve high level of excellence. The book attempts to answer the 'What, who, when, and how' of Excellence, i.e. 'what' is excellence, 'who' are considered as excellent companies, 'when' a company is prepared to use tools/ frameworks and models to achieve excellence, 'how' strategic competitiveness can be enhanced using one of the most widely used tools, viz., Benchmarking. Business cases from across the globe of different industries have been used to demonstrate how companies have achieved competitiveness and thus enhanced their long-term competitive advantage to become excellent companies. The book has three parts, viz., concepts, business cases and tool for competitiveness. Competitiveness has been widely used in companies, but the understanding of the concept is not consistent across industry and academia. For instance, there are many models and frameworks across the globe, which generally companies use for evaluating and enhancing their competitiveness. Companies often tend to get drifted into the ocean of various models and frameworks and on one fine day adopt a model or framework, only to repent after few quarters or years, as the case may be. It follows what is called 'operation successful, but patient died' syndrome. Although all are good, the judgment of applying 'which' model/ framework and 'when' is very critical. This book throws light on how to choose and not choose various models and frameworks, which generally depends on the company's maturity level, context, and most importantly inherent culture of the company. This book has been designed in a way that it will help a reader to first understand the concept of competitiveness, get an idea of what companies have been doing across the globe to become competitive and then how it can use tools such as benchmarking and other models/ frameworks to build and enhance their own competitiveness. It has been written in a very simple language so that it can be easily read and applied as also can serve as a direction for prompting future thought processes in companies in their journey towards excellence.
