Book The Eight Realizations of Great Beings

Download or read book The Eight Realizations of Great Beings written by Brother Phap Hai and published by Parallax Press. This book was released on 2021-09-28 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A pithy guide to the Buddha's instructions to unlock the powerful insights that make us "great"—by wise, warm, and humorous Brother Phap Hai, the most senior Australian Dharma teacher ordained by Thich Nhat Hanh In this essential sutra for sincere practitioners, the Buddha says, "If you would like to be enlightened, take on these eight subjects for meditation and apply their corresponding insights to your daily life." Brother Phap Hai's lively, down-to-earth explanation of spirituality's original self-help manual makes this book a must-read for all seeking inspiration on the path of self-realization and compassion. Beginning with a brief historical overview of the sutra's origins, Brother Phap Hai explores each of the eight realizations and shares a story in each chapter from his own journey to become a monk himself. Ordaining as a Buddhist monk in 1997 while still in his twenties, Brother Phap Hai has been practicing mindfulness on a daily basis for much of his adult life. Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh authorized him to teach in 2003, and since then, he has guided and mentored thousands of students in meditation. Brother Phap Hai calls the Buddha's Discourse on the Eight Realizations of Great Beings his "'Desert Island Sutra' because it distills the essence of the Buddhist path." In his words, it is everything you need in a practical meditation manual, "a very structured exposition of realizing the entirety of the Buddhist path for yourself."

Book The Prophet and the Bodhisattva

Download or read book The Prophet and the Bodhisattva written by Charles R. Strain and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2014-02-19 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Can religious individuals and communities learn from each other in ways that will lead them to collaborate in addressing the great ethical challenges of our time, including climate change and endless warfare? This is the central question underlying The Prophet and the Bodhisattva. It juxtaposes two figures emblematic of an ideal moral life: the prophet as it evolved in ancient Israel and the bodhisattva as it flowered in Mahayana Buddhism. In particular, The Prophet and the Bodhisattva focuses on Daniel Berrigan and Thich Nhat Hanh, who in their lives embody and in their writings reflect upon their respective moral type. Berrigan, a Jesuit priest, pacifist, and poet, is best known for burning draft files in 1968 and for hammering and pouring blood on a nuclear warhead in 1980. His extensive writings on the Hebrew prophets reflect his life of nonviolent activism. Thich Nhat Hanh, Buddhist monk, Vietnamese exile, and poet struggled to end the conflict during the Vietnam War. Since then he has led the global movement that he named Engaged Buddhism and has written many commentaries on Mahayana scriptures. For fifty years both have been teaching us how to pursue peace and justice, a legacy we can draw upon to build a social ethics for our time.

Download or read book What on Earth Are You written by Richard H. Palmquist and published by Archway Publishing. This book was released on 2019-01-10 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Freud postulated generalities about the make-up of a person. In What on Earth are You, author Richard Palmquist attempts to go one layer deeper, sorting out the aspects of personality relating to God and to society. Most people only partly understand what “makes you tick.” Even the most well-known psychological experts seem to hesitate to suggest how the unseen parts of a person fit together. Palmquist shows how defining the inner workings of your relationships with God and your friends can help your quality of life to become a melodious, joyful, fun experience. He asks you to answer a host of questions: · How do you define your character? · Does your willful mental emotion control your conscious, memory-fueled ego? · Are you soul-centered? · Are you allowing the Holy Spirit to fill and to control your spirit? · Does your spirit, your memory-driven, conscious ego, rule over your willful mind and emotion? What on Earth Are You? offers an engaging religious and philosophical commentary that asks you to seek God and his promise of salvation and eternity while discovering your purpose and destiny in faith.

Book Food Full of Life

Download or read book Food Full of Life written by Gill Bacchus and published by Floris Books. This book was released on 2012-08-30 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is organic and biodynamic food worth the higher price consumers often pay? Which aspects of us are nourished by the food we eat? How can different methods of growing and cooking food best preserve the life energies in our food? In recent years there has been a growing awareness of the quality of the food we eat, allied to a mistrust of many aspects of large-scale 'agri-industry'. In response to these concerns, many consumers turned towards buying organic or biodynamic produce. Our current financial climate makes those buying decisions difficult for many people. Organic food is often more expensive, and tests by conventional scientists claim to show that is has no extra nutritional value. This book questions whether these claims have any basis. Gill Bacchus concludes that modern scientific methods simply cannot reveal or measure the true life processes that give quality to our food. Exploring ideas from organics and Rudolf Steiner's biodynamics, the author discusses how the Earth's formative energies, especially sunlight, are essential to the healthy life of plants and animals. The living energy in our food is either enhanced or destroyed by our chosen methods of farming, processing and cooking. She argues that the health not only of our bodies, but also of our consciousness, thinking and emotions, depends on nourishing ourselves wisely, and gives advice on how we can learn to find and choose food that is 'full of life and light'.
