Download or read book The Corrosion Behavior of Titanium Alloys in Chloride Solutions Materials for Surgical Implants written by Milton Levy and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Y FLUIDS, MECHANICAL PROPERTIES, TEST METHODS, HEAT TREATMENT, ALUMINUM ALLOYS, MOLYBDENUM ALLOYS, SURGERY, VANADIUM ALLOYS, TIN ALLOYS, YIELD POINTBIOLOGICAL MATERIAL, SALT WATER, TITANIUM ALLOY 8AL 1MO 1V, TITANIUM ALLOY 6AL 2SN 6VBecause certain titanium alloys are of interest as surgical implants, the corrosion behavior of alloys Ti-8Al-1Mo-1V in both the single and duplex annealed conditions and Ti-6Al-6V-2Sn at yield strength levels of 140, 160, and 180 ksi were studied in 0.17M sodium chloride solution (the approximate NaCl concentration in blood, plasma, and lymph) and Hanks's physiological solution (a fairly close imitation, from the chemical viewpoint, of the fluid in muscle and bone) at a temperature of 37 C by electrochemical means, i.e., potential-time, anodic polarization, current density-time for the anodes under potentiostatic control at the equilibrium potential. Electrochemical measurements were made with these alloys in both the unstressed and stressed conditions, and then under conditions of cyclic stress. (Author).

Book Surface Preparation and Corrosion Behavior of Titanium Alloys for Surgical Implants

Download or read book Surface Preparation and Corrosion Behavior of Titanium Alloys for Surgical Implants written by AC. Fraker and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Surface preparation and corrosion behavior of titanium alloys were studied; both topics deal with the formation of surface oxide films. When metals are prepared for surgical implant use, an effort is made to produce an optimum surface. Effects of the surface treatments on surface morphology, surface film composition, and structure are shown in transmission electron photomicrographs and electron diffraction patterns. Roughened surfaces were produced, and surface films of titanium oxide (TiO) or titanium dioxide (TiO2) or both occurred on some specimens. Sodium titanate (NaO . xTiO2) occurred on the specimens washed in sodium hydroxide (NaOH) solution.

Book Titanium Alloys as Implant Materials

Download or read book Titanium Alloys as Implant Materials written by AC. Fraker and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Titanium alloys are prominent as dental and orthopedic materials because of their high strength-to-weight ratio, lower elastic modulus, excellent corrosion resistance and apparent biocompatibility. Based on microstructures that can be produced by alloying, titanium alloys are grouped as alpha, alpha-beta and beta alloys. Alpha titanium and alpha-beta alloys have been used for dental and orthopedic purposes. Beta titanium alloys are being considered as candidate materials for implant applications because of their ease of formability, increased strength and lower elastic modulus, in spite of increased cost. Studies show the presence of the omega phase in the beta alloy, Ti-15Mo-2.8Nb, in the unaged condition. Comparison of corrosion behavior of this alloy with the alloy Ti-6Al-4V shows the two alloys have comparable corrosion resistance in simulated physiological solution. A review and data are presented along with a discussion of the influence of composition, heat treatment and microstructure on mechanical properties and corrosion behavior of titanium alloys, in general, and of beta alloys, in particular.
