Book excerpt: The problem of stress corrosion cracking (SCC), which causes sudden failure of metals and other materials subjected to stress in corrosive environment(s), has a significant impact on a number of sectors including the oil and gas industries and nuclear power production. Stress corrosion cracking reviews the fundamentals of the phenomenon as well as examining stress corrosion behaviour in specific materials and particular industries. The book is divided into four parts. Part one covers the mechanisms of SCC and hydrogen embrittlement, while the focus of part two is on methods of testing for SCC in metals. Chapters in part three each review the phenomenon with reference to a specific material, with a variety of metals, alloys and composites discussed, including steels, titanium alloys and polymer composites. In part four, the effect of SCC in various industries is examined, with chapters covering subjects such as aerospace engineering, nuclear reactors, utilities and pipelines. With its distinguished editors and international team of contributors, Stress corrosion cracking is an essential reference for engineers and designers working with metals, alloys and polymers, and will be an invaluable tool for any industries in which metallic components are exposed to tension, corrosive environments at ambient and high temperatures. - Examines the mechanisms of stress corrosion cracking (SCC) presenting recognising testing methods and materials resistant to SCC - Assesses the effect of SCC on particular metals featuring steel, stainless steel, nickel-based alloys, magnesium alloys, copper-based alloys and welds in steels - Reviews the monitoring and management of SCC and the affect of SCC in different industries such as petrochemical and aerospace

Book Description and Engineering Characteristics of Eleven New High temperature Alloys

Download or read book Description and Engineering Characteristics of Eleven New High temperature Alloys written by Ward F. Simmons and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Memorandum contains a description and summary of preliminary properties of eleven new alloys that are considered to be promising high-temperature materials. Most of them are in the experimental-application stage of their development; however, a few have reached the point where they can be considered commercial. Included are six nickel-base alloys, two iron-base alloys, one iron-nickel-base alloy, one cobalt base alloy, and one multicomponent alloy that contains primarily nickel and chromium. Following descriptions of composition and microstructure of each alloy, a large section of the memorandum is concerned with physical and mechanical properties, predominantly stress-rupture and creep properties. Oxidation and sulfidation as well as elevated temperature stability of the alloys is discussed. Information on processing and availability of the alloys is also given. (Author).

Book High Temperature Oxidation and Corrosion of Metals

Download or read book High Temperature Oxidation and Corrosion of Metals written by David John Young and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2008-10-03 with total page 593 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is concerned with understanding the fundamental mechanisms of high temperature alloy oxidation. It uses this understanding to develop methods of predicting oxidation rates and the way they change with temperature, gas chemistry and alloy composition. The focus is on designing (or selecting) alloy compositions which provide optimal resistance to attack by corrosive gases. . Emphasises quantitative calculations for predicting reaction rates and the effects of temperature, oxidant activities and alloy compositions. . Uses phase diagrams and diffusion paths to analyse and interpret scale structures and internal precipitation distributions . Provides a detailed examination of corrosion in industrial gases (water vapour effects, carburisation and metal dusting, sulphidation) . Text is well supported by numerous micrographs, phase diagrams and tabulations of relevant thermodynamic and kinetic data . Combines physical chemistry and materials science methodologies.

Book High Temperature Corrosion and Materials Applications

Download or read book High Temperature Corrosion and Materials Applications written by George Y. Lai and published by ASM International. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 469 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: George Lai's 1990 book, High-Temperature Corrosion of Engineering Alloys, is recognized as authoritative and is frequently consulted and often cited by those in the industry. His new book, almost double in size with seven more chapters, addresses the new concerns, new technologies, and new materials available for those engaged in high-temperature applications. As we strive for energy efficiency, the realm of high-temperature environments is expanding and the need for information on high temperature materials applications was never greater. In addition to extensive expansion on most of the content of the original book, new topics include erosion and erosion-corrosion, low NOx combustion in coal-fired boilers, fluidized bed combustion, and the special demands of waste-to-energy boilers, waste incinerators, and black liquor recovery boilers in the pulp and paper industry. The corrosion induced by liquid metals is discussed and protection options are presented.

Book The Corrosion Resistance of Several Alloys in an HF H2O Atmosphere at High Temperatures

Download or read book The Corrosion Resistance of Several Alloys in an HF H2O Atmosphere at High Temperatures written by C. F. Ritchie and published by . This book was released on 1952 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Several alloys have been tested for corrosion resistance when exposed to an HF-H2O atmosphere at 1070°F. The tests indicate tha the Ni-Cr alloys, as a group, give the best corrosion resistance where strength at high temperature is desired. Other alloys have given excellent results but the lack of strength at the higher temperatures or cost, is against their use in production equipment.

Book Aluminum Lithium Alloys

Download or read book Aluminum Lithium Alloys written by N.J.H. Holroyd and published by Elsevier Inc. Chapters. This book was released on 2013-09-20 with total page 53 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Industrial interest in wrought heat-treatable aluminium-lithium (Al–Li) based alloys dates back to around 1919 in Germany. However the exploitation of these alloys has historically been limited by their mechanical property anisotropy and concerns over their localized corrosion resistance and temperature stability. Recently, in the last ten years, alloy and process development has resulted in alloy compositions and thermomechanical treatments that potentially can overcome these issues. To put these developments in perspective we have reviewed the corrosion characteristics of first, second and third generation alloys with an emphasis on localized corrosion (intergranular and exfoliation) and stress corrosion cracking (SCC). Intergranular corrosion susceptibility of Al–Li–Cu and Al–Li–Cu–Mg alloys increases with copper content, and the depth of attack increases with ageing, i.e. UAPA~30 mm) further analysis of corrosion test results is required.
