Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Commentary on the Writings of Henrik Ibsen IN reading consecutively the whole series of Ih sen's dramas, one is apt to be seized with a kind of philosophic despair. The more radically you think of the problems of human existence, the more deeply you seek to penetrate them, the more ln soluble they seem to become. Of course I am aware that any final solution, even if possible, would not be desirable. It would be a calamity. Humanity would stagnate, grow torpid and indo lent; and its glorious evolution would be arrested, if each new generation were not confronted with urgent riddles, both abstract and concrete, clamour ing for solution. There is, 'however, no danger of our incurring degeneration and decay by guessing, once for all, the riddle of the Sphinx, and witness ing its plunge into the abysmal void. It is an evidence of our spiritual vitality that we have no. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ibsen In these pages, where the space at my disposal was so small, I have not been willing to waste it by repeating the plots of any of those plays of Ibsen which are open to the English reader. It would please me best if this book might be read in connection with the final edition of Ibsen's Complete Dramatic Works, now being prepared by Mr. Archer. If we may judge of the whole work by those volumes of it which have already appeared, I have little hesitation in saying that no other foreign author of the second half of the nineteenth century has been so ably and exhaustively edited in English as Ibsen has been in this instance. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Henrik Ibsen a Critical Study, Vol. 5 I have read no critical books for this study, save Mr. Archer's invaluable introductions, Dr. Brandes' three essays. And Mr. Wicksteed's four lectures; I have purposely avoided consulting books that had at all the same purpose as this. I must here, however, acknowledge that I have been anticipated in one of my principal criticisms on the Ibsenite school by Sir A. Quiller Couch, who in an essay on Peer Gynt insists far more ably than I on Ibsen's essential belief in self-sacrifice. I had not read Sir Arthur quiller-couch's essay when I first wrote what I felt about Ibsen's View of salvation by love; but I am proud to find myself in agreement with so sane and acute a critic. The essay is to be found in the volume entitled Adventures in Criticism. R. E. R. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1905 edition. Excerpt: ... INTRODUCTION On the 31st of May 1880, Henrik Ibsen wrote to his publisher, Frederik Hegel, that he had begun a little book in which he intended to give some account of the outward and inward conditions under which each one of his works had come into being (Letter 147). It was to be called From Skien to Rome, and was to give descriptions of his life at Skien and Grimstad, Bergen and Christiania, Dresden, Munich, and Rome. As Hegel offered various objections to this project, Ibsen declared himself quite willing to relinquish it for the time being (Letter 149). But he did not give up the idea altogether. In the spring of 1881, in Rome, he said to his friend Professor L Dietrichson, as the latter has recorded in his Memoirs (Svundne Tider, i. 363, 364): "People believe that I have changed my views in the course of time. This is a great mistake. My development has, as a matter of fact, been absolutely consistent. I myself can distinctly follow and indicate the thread of its whole course--the unity of my ideas and their gradual development; and I am writing some memoranda which will prove to the world how exactly the same I am now as when I first found myself." Towards the close of this same year he wrote to another Norwegian friend, Professor 0. Skavlan, that he had for some time past been busying himself at intervals with writing a record of his experiences, in the form of a work conceived in the half-sportive, half-serious style of the Preface to CatUiTia. He suggested publishing passages from this in Skavlan's periodical (Letter 155). Up to the present time, however, no such memoranda have been given to the public, with the exception of some reminiscences of childhood to be found in Henrik Jaeger's book on Ibsen (pp. 6-16). The id
