Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Corncrake's Welcome continues the story of William Hanna’s family, introduced in Voyages with my Grandfather. Spanning a hundred years, these memoirs delve into the turbulent birth of Northern Ireland, wartime Belfast, and the 1960s, when Hanna was growing up in Windsor Manse, next to the Presbyterian Church where his father was the Minister. Join the young boy, enthralled by both the orange sashes of Belfast and the green rugby jerseys of Dublin. See the teenager confronted by the Troubles, beginning to question his religious and national inheritance. Follow Hanna’s coming-of-age journey, from Ireland to Scotland, Switzerland, and France, and watch him set out on a diplomatic career in Dublin and in Brussels. Share his joy and sorrow when he returns to Ireland, after many years serving as EU Ambassador around the world; recalls his father’s historic meeting with Pope John Paul II; and makes poignant discoveries about events a century ago. Praise for Voyages with my Grandfather: ‘Beautifully written. Very moving’ Alexander McCall Smith ‘Extraordinary insight into life of Northern Ireland Presbyterians’ Gail Walker, Belfast Telegraph ‘Wonderful book. A remarkable family story very well told’ Sir Jonathan Faull

Long estranged from his only child, and spurred by his wife’s last words to him, Seán dreams up an elaborate plan that cannot fail to heal the rift between them—a plan that will test the strength and resolve of an elderly hero who would rather stay in his chair by the fire with a cup of tea. The Currach and the Corncrake is a heroic journey of hope and reconciliation. It is about monks, monsters, and manuscripts; boats, birds, and old bones.

Book Food and Farming in Prehistoric Britain

Download or read book Food and Farming in Prehistoric Britain written by Paul Elliott and published by Fonthill Media. This book was released on 2017-03-13 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From spit roasting pig to hanging cream cheese from the rafters, from baking roast pork under the ground in pits to cooking trout on wicker frames over an open fire, cooking techniques in prehistoric Britain are ingenious and revealing. There were no ovens and many vegetables and breeds of animal familiar to us today had not yet arrived. In reconstructing some of these techniques and recipes, the author has discovered a different world, with a completely different approach to food. This is native cuisine, cooked in a manner that persisted through the Neolithic, Bronze and Iron Ages. This book first tells the story of prehistoric settlement, and moves on to explore the hunting and foraging techniques of the Mesolithic. After discussing the way in which the Britons farmed, and what they grew, the book moves into the roundhouse and the tools and utensils available. The final half of the book examines the varied techniques used, from covering fish in clay, to baking meat underground, spit roasting, brewing mead, boiling water with hot stones and so on. All the techniques have been carried out by the author.

Book The Hunt for the Golden Mole

Download or read book The Hunt for the Golden Mole written by Richard Girling and published by Catapult. This book was released on 2015-11-10 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Taking as its narrative engine the hunt for an animal that is legendarily rare, Richard Girling writes an engaging and highly informative history of humankind's interest in hunting and collecting – what prompts us to do this? what good might come of our need to catalog all the living things of the natural world? Girling, named Environmental Journalist of the Years 2008 and 2009, has here chronicled – through the hunt for the Somali golden mole – the development of the conservation movement, the importance of diversity in the animal kingdom, including humankind within this realm, as well as a hard look at extinction. The Somali mole of the title, first descibed in print in a text book published in 1964, had as sole evidence of its existence only the fragment of a jaw bone found in an owl pellet, a specimen that seemed to have vanished as Girling began his exploration. Intrigued by the elusiveness of this creature and what the hunt for the facts of its existence might tell us about extinction, he was drawn to the dusty vaults of museums of natural history where the most rare artifacts are stored and catalogued, as he found himself caught up in the need to track it down. Part quest, part travelog, the book that results not only offers an important voice to the scientific debate about extinction and biodiversity it becomes an environmental call to arms.
