Book Catalogue of the Coptic Inscriptions in the Sudan National Museum at Khartoum I Khartoum Copt

Download or read book Catalogue of the Coptic Inscriptions in the Sudan National Museum at Khartoum I Khartoum Copt written by Jacques van der Vliet and published by Peeters Publishers. This book was released on 2003 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Museum holds the world's largest collection of Christian inscriptions from Nubia south of the modern frontier with Egypt, about half of the which are in Coptic. The Greek texts are cataloged in a companion volume. The 128 inscriptions here are only monumental, the object of traditional epigraphy, and do not include the related dipinti accompanying wall paintings and graffiti on pottery. Almost all of them are funerary. Even the smallest fragments are included, because the knowledge of Medieval Nubia is quite meager and anything may prove useful. The copious notes and comments pay much attention to questions of archaeological context, language variation, and literary culture. The pieces are illustrated with monochrome photographs. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book reproduces the cleaned paintings for the first time. It also describes and analyzes their amalgam of Coptic (Egyptian Christian), Byzantine, and Arab styles and motifs as well as the religious culture to which they belong. In 1996, funded by the United States Agency for International Development and at the request of the Monastery of St. Antony, the Antiquities Development Project of the American Research Center in Egypt began the conservation of the paintings in the church. The paintings revealed by the conservators are of extremely high quality, both stylistically and conceptually. While rooted in the Christian tradition of Egypt, they also reveal explicit connections with Byzantine and Islamic art of the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. Some newly discovered paintings can even be dated back to the sixth or seventh century.

Book The Christian Epigraphy of Egypt and Nubia

Download or read book The Christian Epigraphy of Egypt and Nubia written by Jacques van der Vliet and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-04-20 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Collected Studies CS1070 The present book collects 31 articles that Jacques van der Vliet, a leading scholar in the field of Coptic Studies (Leiden University / Radboud University, Nijmegen), has published since 1999 on Christian inscriptions from Egypt and Nubia. These inscriptions are dated between the third/fourth and the fourteenth centuries, and are often written in Coptic and/or Greek, once in Latin, and sometimes (partly) in Arabic, Syriac or Old Nubian. They include inscriptions on tomb stones, walls of religious buildings, tools, vessels, furniture, amulets and even texts on luxury garments. Whereas earlier scholars in the field of Coptic Studies often focused on either Coptic or Greek, Van der Vliet argues that inscriptions in different languages that appear in the same space or on the same kind of objects should be examined together. In addition, he aims to combine the information from documentary texts, archaeological remains and inscriptions, in order to reconstruct the economic, social and religious life of monastic or civil communities. He practiced this methodology in his studies on the Fayum, Wadi al-Natrun, Sohag, Western Thebes and the region of Aswan and Northern Nubia, which are all included in this book.

Book Inscriptions of Piety and Coptic Saints in Old Cairo Fustat

Download or read book Inscriptions of Piety and Coptic Saints in Old Cairo Fustat written by Fatima Esmail and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An artifact in the Keir Collection of Islamic Art, a double-sided folio with saintly drawings of haloed figures and inscriptions in Coptic and Arabic, is the subject of this paper. The artifact has not been researched before and except for the brief catalogue entry in the Keir Collection Catalogue, the author did not find any secondary scholarship on this artifact. It has been grouped within the label of “Fustat Fragments,” and has not been studied closely in relation to the drawings and the inscriptions, nor have the identities of the figures of the drawings been accurately determined. The informal quality of the line drawings and rough, hastily penned inscriptions raise interesting questions on the nature and purpose of this object. Through a close analysis of the visual, textual and the physical characteristics of the fragment, this paper attempts to answer some questions raised. The questions pertain to the identification of the figures, the stylistic and iconographical elements of the illustrations, the content of the inscriptions, the literary corpus they originate from and, whether the fragment belonged within a manuscript, as well as the time period and historical context of its production. The study identifies the figures as the equestrian martyr Saint George and the Archangel Michael, who are widely venerated in Coptic Christianity as protectors and intercessors. The inscriptions have been identified as consisting of biblical passages and extracts from psalms contained within the Agpeya, the book of hours of Coptic (Egyptian) Christians. For the Coptic Christians, the religiosity and reverence that the figures of Saint George and Archangel Michael inspire, the roles that define them, and the narratives that they are associated with, make them objects of devotion and power. The narratives emerging in the illustrations relate to the ideas of the triumph of goodness over evil, intercession between God and mankind and protection from adversities of life and safe passage into eternity. The discussion throws light on the Coptic painting traditions and iconographical programs that promoted the saintly narratives, and the styles that were in use in the Premodern period, such as the Akhmim Style from Upper Egypt, as well as the artists that propagated the art. The translation and analysis of the biblical content of the inscriptions, which contain invocations to Christ and Virgin Mary, brings into play the literary tradition pertaining to religious texts, the historical context of Copto-Arabic literature, the preservation of religious texts through manuscripts production, and the role of the monasteries in this area of activity.
