Book The Contemplative Leader

Download or read book The Contemplative Leader written by Patrick Boland and published by BenBella Books. This book was released on 2024-01-16 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most effective leaders are deeply aware of how their presence impacts every dimension of their leadership. This guide shows leaders in any organization how to move beyond the daily noise of your environment and connect with people to bring about change where it matters most. Featuring interviews with world-renowned leaders, from Richard Rohr (contemplative teacher) to Margaret Wheatley (author of Leadership and the New Science) and Matthew McCarthy (former CEO of Ben & Jerry’s), this book provides a framework for understanding how best to connect with who we are and with those whom we lead. In The Contemplative Leader, psychotherapist, leadership consultant, and executive coach Patrick Boland integrates ancient wisdom with scientific research. He introduces psychological models, anecdotes, reflective questions, and innovative practices that outline how to: Re-envision leadership as something that takes account of the breadth of human experience Uncover the narratives that have shaped us so we can embrace our whole self (false self and true self) Focus on both the financials and the people, the results and the road that gets us there, the personal benefits and the impact on the wider organization and community Whether you are a seasoned leader in need of a reset to connect with what’s most important, new to leadership and looking for some “soul” work to do to develop authentic influence, or seeking to integrate beneficial practices into your active roles inside and outside of work, The Contemplative Leader is a comprehensive guide to shaping relationships and systems to use your power and influence for good.

Book Contemplative Leadership in the Workplace

Download or read book Contemplative Leadership in the Workplace written by Steven W. Trimble and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This exploratory research project investigated contemplative leadership as experienced by seven people out of 22, who attended a multi-day seminar on the subject at a major university. Little has been written about contemplative leadership as applied to business and none of this prior research has presented a process for leading from a contemplative perspective. People in today's workplace teams are faced with complex problems that require breakthrough solutions, i.e., approaches that transcend current paradigms. Business leaders need an effective leadership process. A prime example is the area of project management. Participants of the seminar experienced such breakthroughs; however, no process theory was provided to help participants replicate these results either in other seminars or in their workplaces. This research project results in a notional model for this process. Through heuristic research methods, 12 seminar themes are identified. These themes are used to construct the following 7-step contemplative leadership process: (1) establish intention, (2) create a generative space, (3) guide individuals through personal transformations, (4) guide the group through a group transformation, (5) use dialogue to lead the group to a breakthrough regarding the intention, (6) administer follow-through, and (7) verify that the results satisfy the intention. Transformation is defined as a change in worldview and/or way of being by a person or group. the researcher's experience of successfully applying contemplative leadership to project management is also explored. Specific contemplative leadership methods such as silence, deep listening, storytelling, and dialogue are identified for overcoming the major reasons why projects fail as reported in the literature. Specific examples of how the contemplative leadership model was used to revive three failing teams at a major aerospace firm are included. A comparison of research results to some of the management and leadership theories prevalent in the literature is also provided. Recommendations include future research into the effect of increasing the number and diversity of seminar interviewees, the impact of changing the seminar duration, a more detailed study of the use of contemplative leadership in project management, and the relationship between contemplative leadership traits and process.

Book Contemplative Leadership for Entrepreneurial Organizations

Download or read book Contemplative Leadership for Entrepreneurial Organizations written by Nancy Eggert and published by Praeger. This book was released on 1998-09-24 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Synthesizing elements from linguistics, philosophy, and the histories of science and spirituality, Dr. Eggert opens the door to new ways of thinking, perceiving, valuing, inquiring, and acting for leaders of entrepreneurial organizations. She maintains that the mainstream leadership paradigm both opens and closes possibilities for inspired leadership. Today's leaders need an alternative because the dominant leadership paradigm is no longer serving them well. Her book illustrates the contemplative tradition, exemplified by the 14th century mystic Meister Eckhart, and offers a set of fundamental assumptions about organizational life that can serve as precisely the sort of alternative paradigm needed to challenge the current logical-rational paradigm inherited from the Enlightenment. Indeed, by adopting the contemplative style of leadership, management in today's often distraught organizations will find new, more effective ways to approach today's very special, and wicked, organizational problems. Dr. Eggert explores leadership styles that would arise from the comtemplative paradigm. Her book first considers several classics such as Thomas Kuhn's The Structure of Scientific Revolutions, Kenneth Boulding's Images, and Gareth Morgan's Images of Organizations that illustrate and explain how our basic set of operating assumptions affect how we think, inquire, value, perceive, and act—highlighting certain aspects and obscuring others in accordance with the reigning paradigm. Alternative paradigms, Eggert argues, offer alternative and additional ways of thinking and acting that bear on today's wicked problems—the chronic, unwieldy, malignant tangles that bedevil organizations today. Using the contemplative experience itself as a key metaphor for the contemplative paradigm, the second section of the book uses theologian Matthew Fox's work on medieval German mystic Meister Eckhart to identify and map the underlying assumptions of the contemplative approach to life. The focus then shifts to Contemplative Leadership, the style of leadership that would flow from contemplative assumptions. Eggert's book is fascinating, important reading for people with management responsibilities in today's public and private sector organizations.

Book A Narrative Inquiry Into Contemplative Leadership

Download or read book A Narrative Inquiry Into Contemplative Leadership written by Cui Ying Gao and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research explores the link between the practice of contemplation and its influence on leadership. It investigates how the interiority of the leader can shape the style and quality of leadership practice. This research has as its ultimate goal the provision of a deeper understanding of contemplative leadership, its concepts, characteristics, challenges, and opportunities; and it shows how contemplative leadership can be realistically lived and demonstrated in an organisational setting. The literature includes an overview of the historical development of leadership theories, an exploration of the history and development of the Christian contemplative tradition, and a review of the principal assumptions of contemplative leadership. The qualitative research methodology used was that of narrative inquiry by way of in-depth, semi-structured interviewing. The interview participants were a purposively chosen, information rich, non-probability group. Sixteen leaders who have a contemplative orientation to their life and work participated in the in-depth interviews. The study finds that to be a more authentic and effective leader, a major task is nurturing a disciplined contemplative life through developing an intimate relationship with God. The findings also provide an insight into the multifaceted reality of contemplative leadership including its concepts, characteristics, challenges, and opportunities. Further findings are described under the following themes: contemplation is transformative; contemplation and leadership are complementary; contemplative leadership can promote a good organizational culture. A new model of contemplative leadership is also presented with the hope of providing the language and a theoretical and practical framework necessary to inform and guide prospective leaders and future leadership development.
