Download or read book The Consummate Virgin written by Jodi McAlister and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-08-25 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a study of female virginity loss and its representations in popular Anglophone literatures. It explores dominant cultural narratives around what makes a “good” female virginity loss experience by examining two key forms of popular literature: autobiographical virginity loss stories and popular romance fiction. In particular, this book focuses on how female sexual desire and romantic love have become entangled in the contemporary cultural imagination, leading to the emergence of a dominant paradigm which dictates that for women, sexual desire and love are and should be intrinsically linked together: something which has greatly affected cultural scripts for virginity loss. This book examines the ways in which this paradigm has been negotiated, upheld, subverted, and resisted in depictions of virginity loss in popular literatures, unpacking the romanticisation of the idea of “the right one” and “the right time”.

Download or read book LA MADRE DEL MA Z written by Gilbert R. Cruz and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2012-08-03 with total page 115 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of Guadalupe conforms to Mary’s maternal duty. The maternal duty of Mary towards men in no way obscures or diminishes this unique mediation of Christ; rather shows its power. For all the influences of Blessed Virgin Mary on men, originate, not from necessity, but from divine pleasure. They flow from the abundance of the merits of Christ, rest on his mediation, depend entirely on it, and draw its power from it. In no way do they impede the immediate union of the faithful with Christ. Rather they foster it. Download or read book God is Good written by Martin G. Kuhrt and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2020-07-30 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is the God of the Bible the most unpleasant character in all fiction, as Richard Dawkins claims in The God Delusion? He is backed up by former preacher and now virulent atheist, Dan Barker, who has cited Scripture, seeking to justify every one of Dawkins’s infamous character slurs about the God of the Old Testament. Dawkins says the biblical God is “jealous and proud of it; a petty, unjust, unforgiving control-freak; a vindictive, bloodthirsty ethnic cleanser; a misogynistic, homophobic, racist, infanticidal, genocidal, filicidal, pestilential, megalomaniacal, sadomasochistic, capriciously malevolent bully.” Barker has added eight accusations of his own. Dawkins was too kind, he says. The God of the Bible is also “a pyromaniacal, angry, merciless, curse hurling, vaccicidal, aborticidal, cannibalistic slavemonger.” Furthermore, Barker thoroughly implicates Jesus in the alleged crimes of his Father. God is Good seeks to answer every one of these twenty-seven accusations. Written for theological students, pastors, preachers, thoughtful laypeople who wince at some of what they read in the Bible, and those atheists who are honestly searching for truth, this book ducks none of the difficult questions and problematic passages.
Download or read book Nahuatl Theater Our Lady of Guadalupe written by Barry D. Sell and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2006-12-01 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The foundation legend of the Mexican devotion to Our Lady of Guadalupe is one of the most appealing and beloved of all religious stories. In this volume, editors Barry D. Sell, Louise M. Burkhart, and Stafford Poole present the only known colonial Nahuatl-language dramas based on the Virgin of Guadalupe story: the Dialogue of the Apparition of the Virgin Saint Mary of Guadalupe, an anonymous work from the late seventeenth or early eighteenth century, and The Mexican Portent, authored by creole priest Joseph Pérez de la Fuente in the early eighteenth century. The plays, never before published in English translation, are vital works in the history of the Guadalupe devotion, for they show how her story was presented to native people at a time when it was not universally known. Faithful transcriptions and translations of the plays are accompanied here by introductory essays by Poole and Burkhart and by three additional previously unpublished Guadalupan texts in Nahuatl. This volume is the second in a four-volume series titled Nahuatl Theater, edited by Sell and Burkhart.

Book excerpt: Two young women die at a private New England college twenty years apart. Yet the deaths are related by a Greek fraternity and sorority. An African-American professor and provost of the college wants to find out who's responsible, but the college president and dean of students want the investigation stopped. A mobster whose son is involved also wants it to stop and is willing to blackmail the professor to see that it is dropped. He knows something about the professor's father (who was supposedly killed while in the army) that could ruin the professor's career and reputation. But professor is willing to sacrifice all to find the truth. The Pittsburgh Courier says, "We see how no measure of justice will restore the lives lost and realize that this book is Donham's call to action for prevention of sexual assault and alcohol abuse on our college campuses. Ultimately, the book succeeds in starkly emphasizing the need for more meaningful teaching and learning and less misogyny, debauchery and disrespect."
Download or read book Love Intimacy and Online Dating written by Lisa Portolan and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-12-02 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Love, Intimacy and Online Dating: How a Global Pandemic Redefined Romantic Relationships is an innovative work that explores the concept of intimacy during the COVID-19 pandemic. The book provides an overview of the online dating world and apps, the use of which gradually became common as the pandemic restricted people’s interaction in the physical world. The author’s extensive research conducted during the pandemic posits a comprehensive understanding of the individual’s motivation to join a dating app and explores its varied aspects. This thoroughly researched book explores the themes and elements of online dating and examines the users’ motivation for joining a dating app, for seeking intimacy as well as for self-presentation on the app. Portolan examines the underlying politics and role of infrastructure of dating apps and describes how gender, power, and intimacy intersect to create new intimacy phenomena. She also utilises her research to put forth the key concept of "Jagged Love", which describes a user’s cyclical relationship with dating apps during the pandemic, and the gap between a user’s act to seek familiar romantic narratives and the app’s inability to deliver against these ideas. The chapters further explore the differences between virtual and In Real Life (IRL) intimacy, the generation of gender and the emanation of stereotypical cultural ideals that the users sought through the apps. The book serves as an invaluable discussion on the pandemic’s impact on modifying the definitions of romance and intimacy. This book will be useful for highlighting the impact social factors can have on familiar concepts and the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the definition of love and intimacy, making it fascinating for students, academics and professionals interested in relationships, digital media and gender. It will also be useful in enhancing the comprehension of love and romance in the fields of social science.

Download or read book New Frontiers in Guadalupan Studies written by Virgilio Elizondo and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2014-09-18 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historical writings on Our Lady of Guadalupe, the most revered sacred figure indigenous to the western hemisphere, have tended to focus on the sixteenth-century origins of her cult. But recent publications have increasingly extended Guadalupan studies beyond the origin debates to analyses of the subsequent evolution and immense influence of the Guadalupe tradition. New Frontiers in Guadalupan Studies significantly enhances this growing body of literature with insightful essays on topics that span the early stages of Guadalupan devotion to the milestone of Pope Benedict XIV establishing an official liturgical feast for Guadalupe in 1754. The volume also breaks new ground in theological analyses of Guadalupe, which comprise an ongoing effort to articulate a Christian response to one of the most momentous events of Christianity's second millennium: the conquest, evangelization, and struggles for life, dignity, and self-determination of the peoples of the Americas.
Download or read book Women Labor Activists in the Movies written by Jennifer L. Borda and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-04-25 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some of the most indelible images of women in recent American film have been of working women fighting for labor reform or to expose corporate corruption. This critical text explores films with female labor activists as main protagonists, illuminating issues of gender and class while depicting the challenges of working class women. Films covered include Salt of the Earth, Pajama Game, Union Maids, With Babies and Banners, Norma Rae, Silkwood, and Live Nude Girls Unite! Through comparative analysis, the text examines the responses of these films to the labor and feminist movements of the last half century, and how American cinema has articulated notions of disempowerment, ambivalence and, at times, the resistance of both women and the working class at large.
