Book Validity and Reliability of a Novel Computer animated Self report Physical Activity Instrument in Older Adults

Download or read book Validity and Reliability of a Novel Computer animated Self report Physical Activity Instrument in Older Adults written by James A. Janssen and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to investigate the reliability, construct validity and responsiveness to a physical activity intervention of the MAT-PA (Mobility Assessment Tool-Physical Activity) physical activity questionnaire (PAQ) for walking in older adults. The MAT-PA is a novel computer-animation assisted self-report questionnaire created for the assessment of physical activity in older adults. We recruited 185 older adults (67.0 ± 4.8yrs, 72% female) at risk for cardiovascular disease as part of the Cooperative Lifestyle Intervention Program-II (CLIP-II) study. Participants completed the MAT-PA with supervision on three occasions, twice at baseline (~14 days apart) and once at six-months. Gait speed at usual and fast pace was measured using a GAITRite instrumented carpet, and 7-day accelerometry were collected at baseline and 6-months. The 400m walk test and a modified version of the CHAMPS PAQ were both completed at baseline. The MAT-PA walking metrics displayed acceptable test-retest reliability (r[s subscript] = 0.63, p[less than]0.01), good correlation with accelerometry moderate intensity physical activity minutes (r[s subscript] = 0.60, p[less than]0.01) and mCHAMPS5 (r[s subscript] = 0.54, p[less than]0.01), and was responsive to change from a physical activity intervention at 6-months when comparing the CLIP-II walking group with controls (F(1,68) = 31.253, p[less than]0.0001, Eta2 = 0.32). Older adults were able to discriminate between walking speed animations. These findings suggest that the MAT-PA has promising psychometric properties for the assessment of walking as a mode of physical activity training.

Book The Stages of Change in Exercise Adoption and Adherence

Download or read book The Stages of Change in Exercise Adoption and Adherence written by Colin Andrew Armstrong and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The transtheoretical model of Prochaska and DiClemente (1982) was developed to explain when and how individuals change their behavior, as well as which factors influence these changes. According to this model, individuals progress through the five stages of change (precontemplation, contemplation, preparation, action, and maintenance) during the process of changing their behavior. The validity of physical activity stages of change instruments has been supported by comparisons with measures of self-efficacy, perceived barriers and benefits, and self-reported participation in physical activity. Stages of change measures have not been validated with objective measures of physical activity. The goal of the current study was to simultaneously evaluate the validity of three commonly used physical activity stage instruments using both a self-report and an objective measure of physical activity. Measures of self-efficacy, barriers, and benefits were also examined. Seventy-two participants completed all measures. Participants wore a small electronic activity monitor (Tritrac accelerometer) during waking hours for one week and completed a semi-structured interview (PAR) to assess their participation in physical activity during the same period of time. The Tritrac and PAR provided scores reflecting a participant's daily minutes in moderate to vigorous physical activity. Consistent with past research, Self-Efficacy, Barriers, Benefits, PAR, and Tritrac data were examined in separate one-way ANOVAs for each stage instrument. Thirteen of the fifteen ANOVAs were significant following a Bonferroni adjustment of the alpha $(p

Book Construct Validation of Self report with Assistance to Measure Physical Activity Behavior in Adults with Intellectual Disabilities

Download or read book Construct Validation of Self report with Assistance to Measure Physical Activity Behavior in Adults with Intellectual Disabilities written by Marquell Johnson and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine the evidence of construct validity for self-report with assistance from a secondary source as a measure of physical activity (PA) in adults with intellectual disabilities (ID) in free-living environments. Thirty-seven participants (21 females, 16 males) with mild to moderate ID aged 19-74 years participated in the study. The Multitrait-Multimethod (MTMM) analysis was used to evaluate the evidence of construct validity for this procedure. Examination of the pattern of reliability and validity coefficients of the MTMM analysis revealed that the reliability coefficients for the self-report variables (PA and fat intake), activity counts, and step counts were higher than all convergent validity coefficients, except for the convergent validity between the two objective measures of PA, and discriminant validity coefficients. The convergent validity coefficients were greater than all of the discriminant validity coefficients except for the heterotrait-monomethod discriminant validity coefficient. The heterotrait-monomethod discriminant validity coefficient was higher than the heterotrait-heteromethod discriminant validity coefficients. The study demonstrated that self-report with assistance from a secondary source as a measure of PA in adults with ID has strong and generalized evidence of convergent validity and strong evidence of discriminant validity.

Book Psychological Testing in the Service of Disability Determination

Download or read book Psychological Testing in the Service of Disability Determination written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United States Social Security Administration (SSA) administers two disability programs: Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), for disabled individuals, and their dependent family members, who have worked and contributed to the Social Security trust funds, and Supplemental Security Income (SSSI), which is a means-tested program based on income and financial assets for adults aged 65 years or older and disabled adults and children. Both programs require that claimants have a disability and meet specific medical criteria in order to qualify for benefits. SSA establishes the presence of a medically-determined impairment in individuals with mental disorders other than intellectual disability through the use of standard diagnostic criteria, which include symptoms and signs. These impairments are established largely on reports of signs and symptoms of impairment and functional limitation. Psychological Testing in the Service of Disability Determination considers the use of psychological tests in evaluating disability claims submitted to the SSA. This report critically reviews selected psychological tests, including symptom validity tests, that could contribute to SSA disability determinations. The report discusses the possible uses of such tests and their contribution to disability determinations. Psychological Testing in the Service of Disability Determination discusses testing norms, qualifications for administration of tests, administration of tests, and reporting results. The recommendations of this report will help SSA improve the consistency and accuracy of disability determination in certain cases.

Book Physical Activity Epidemiology

Download or read book Physical Activity Epidemiology written by Rod K. Dishman and published by Human Kinetics. This book was released on 2012-08-29 with total page 1407 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Physical Activity Epidemiology, Second Edition, provides a comprehensive discussion of current population-level studies showing the influence of physical activity on disease. Updated with extensive new research collected in the eight years since the previous edition, the second edition adds the expertise of respected epidemiologist I-Min Lee. To assist readers in understanding the public health significance of physical activity, Dishman, Heath, and Lee present a detailed review of research findings and what those findings suggest regarding the relationship between physical activity and a variety of health risks. The second edition of this groundbreaking text has been exhaustively updated to reflect the wealth of new research published in this fast-moving field of study. With more than 100 pages of additional content, the text also offers more detailed coverage of all-cause and coronary heart disease mortality, expanded coverage of pathophysiology and biological plausibility, new information on physical activity among various racial–ethnic populations, and the effects of physical activity on cognitive function, dementia, and HIV/AIDS. More than 250 tables and figures, twice the number found in the previous edition, highlight the latest epidemiological information in an easy-to-understand visual format. Physical Activity Epidemiology, Second Edition, assists readers in understanding how leisure-time physical activity can enhance people’s quantity and quality of life by summarizing the available knowledge, detailing the methods used to obtain it, considering its implications for public health, and outlining the important questions that remain. Readers will find comprehensive discussion of these topics: • Evidence that physical activity protects against the development of coronary heart disease and stroke and premature death from all causes • Population-based studies and clinical experiments providing evidence that physical activity and exercise play a role in the primary and secondary prevention of mild hypertension, dyslipidemia, and obesity • Contemporary epidemiologic evidence that physical activity reduces the risk of type 2 diabetes and osteoporosis and protects against the development of breast and colon cancers, some inflammatory diseases, depression, and anxiety disorders • Considerations in the promotion of a safe, physically active lifestyle among all segments of the population Physical Activity Epidemiology, Second Edition, will engage and challenge students by examining the state of current research in all of its variation and even ambiguity. The text details the methodology and findings of classic and contemporary studies and then helps students begin to analyze the results. Special Strength of the Evidence sections found at the end of most chapters summarize the findings to determine the extent to which correlation and causation can be proven. Chapter objectives, chapter summaries, and sidebars in each chapter assist students in focusing on the key points of study, and an extensive glossary with detailed definitions provides a handy reference for review. Instructors will find a new image bank in this edition to enhance their class lecture materials. Physical Activity Epidemiology, Second Edition, offers students, sport and exercise scientists, health and fitness professionals, and public health administrators a comprehensive presentation of significant studies, how these studies contribute to understanding the relationship between activity and disease prevention, and how this information can be used in leading individuals, communities, and global society toward increased health and longevity.

Book Character Strengths and Virtues

Download or read book Character Strengths and Virtues written by Christopher Peterson and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2004-04-08 with total page 815 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Character" has become a front-and-center topic in contemporary discourse, but this term does not have a fixed meaning. Character may be simply defined by what someone does not do, but a more active and thorough definition is necessary, one that addresses certain vital questions. Is character a singular characteristic of an individual, or is it composed of different aspects? Does character--however we define it--exist in degrees, or is it simply something one happens to have? How can character be developed? Can it be learned? Relatedly, can it be taught, and who might be the most effective teacher? What roles are played by family, schools, the media, religion, and the larger culture? This groundbreaking handbook of character strengths and virtues is the first progress report from a prestigious group of researchers who have undertaken the systematic classification and measurement of widely valued positive traits. They approach good character in terms of separate strengths-authenticity, persistence, kindness, gratitude, hope, humor, and so on-each of which exists in degrees. Character Strengths and Virtues classifies twenty-four specific strengths under six broad virtues that consistently emerge across history and culture: wisdom, courage, humanity, justice, temperance, and transcendence. Each strength is thoroughly examined in its own chapter, with special attention to its meaning, explanation, measurement, causes, correlates, consequences, and development across the life span, as well as to strategies for its deliberate cultivation. This book demands the attention of anyone interested in psychology and what it can teach about the good life.
