Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Represented in this novel is a microcosm of what lies beneath the civilized facade of a New York society, and what lies are fed to gullible believers. Any facsimile to real persons or events may or may not be coincidental. That primarily depends on the point of view of the guilty as well as the innocent, and how they perceive themselves. Eric Soloman represents an effort to coerce the mind's eye to focus on two perspectives at the same time, that of the participant and that of the observer. The insurmountable anxieties throttling his ambition and the community in which he lives comprise the collisions that drive him to the point of inevitable madness. The contagious complacency of a self-serving society is the only thing separating him from possible acceptance. His struggles reflect the natural instincts of survival. His heart houses two windows. One through which he sees COURAGE, the other COWARDICE in his uncertain quest for life's elusive meaning.

Book excerpt: From one of the world’s leading neuroscientists: a succinct, illuminating, wholly engaging investigation of how biology, neuroscience, psychology, and artificial intelligence have given us the tools to unlock the mysteries of human consciousness “One thrilling insight after another ... Damasio has succeeded brilliantly in narrowing the gap between body and mind.” —The New York Times Book Review In recent decades, many philosophers and cognitive scientists have declared the problem of consciousness unsolvable, but Antonio Damasio is convinced that recent findings across multiple scientific disciplines have given us a way to understand consciousness and its significance for human life. In the forty-eight brief chapters of Feeling & Knowing, and in writing that remains faithful to our intuitive sense of what feeling and experiencing are about, Damasio helps us understand why being conscious is not the same as sensing, why nervous systems are essential for the development of feelings, and why feeling opens the way to consciousness writ large. He combines the latest discoveries in various sciences with philosophy and discusses his original research, which has transformed our understanding of the brain and human behavior. Here is an indispensable guide to understanding how we experience the world within and around us and find our place in the universe.

Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER "If you’ve ever wondered how you have the capacity to wonder, some fascinating insights await you in these pages.” --Adam Grant, New York Times bestselling author of Originals As concise and enlightening as Seven Brief Lessons on Physics and Astrophysics for People in a Hurry, this mind-expanding dive into the mystery of consciousness is an illuminating meditation on the self, free will, and felt experience. What is consciousness? How does it arise? And why does it exist? We take our experience of being in the world for granted. But the very existence of consciousness raises profound questions: Why would any collection of matter in the universe be conscious? How are we able to think about this? And why should we? In this wonderfully accessible book, Annaka Harris guides us through the evolving definitions, philosophies, and scientific findings that probe our limited understanding of consciousness. Where does it reside, and what gives rise to it? Could it be an illusion, or a universal property of all matter? As we try to understand consciousness, we must grapple with how to define it and, in the age of artificial intelligence, who or what might possess it. Conscious offers lively and challenging arguments that alter our ideas about consciousness—allowing us to think freely about it for ourselves, if indeed we can.

Book The Conscious Enneagram

Download or read book The Conscious Enneagram written by Abi Robins and published by Broadleaf Books . This book was released on 2021-04-27 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Enneagram is a powerful tool, with ancient roots and modern appeal, for detailing the human personality. It illuminates the painful truth of where we are and inspires us with the promise of where we could be. As the Enneagram has grown in popularity over the past 30 years, the insights offered have focused either on the present or the future, with little guidance on how to move from Point A to Point B. In the The Conscious Enneagram Abi Robins offers a rich, insightful guide for those seeking to move from patterns to promise. Through practical, easy-to-understand coaching, storytelling, and personal inquiry, Robins explores three main ways for getting from where we are to where we could be: Practice, Lineage, and Community. These make up the three-legged stool of the inner and outer work required to radically change the way we think, feel, and move through the world. This book will show you how to cultivate each of these legs in your life in meaningful, enriching ways that are tailored to your type.

Book Brain and Conscious Experience

Download or read book Brain and Conscious Experience written by John C. Eccles and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 793 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The planning of this Study Week at the Pontifical Academy of Science from September 28 to October 4, 1964, began just two years before when the President, Professor Lemaitre, asked me if 1 would be responsible for a Study Week relating Psychology to what we may call the Neurosciences. 1 accepted this responsibility on the understanding that 1 could have as sistance from two colleagues in the Academy, Professors Heymans and Chagas. Besides participating in the Study Week they gave me much needed assistance and advice in the arduous and, at times, perplexing task that 1 had undertaken, and 1 gratefully acknowledge my indebtedness to them. Though there have been in recent years many symposia concerned with the so-called higher functions of the brain, for example with percep tion, learning and conditioning, and with the processing of information in the brain, there has to my knowledge been no symposium specifically with brain functions and consciousness since the memorable treating Laurentian Conference of 1953, which was later published in 1954 as the book, "Brain Mechanisms and Consciousness.

Book Individual Differences in Conscious Experience

Download or read book Individual Differences in Conscious Experience written by Robert G. Kunzendorf and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2000-02-15 with total page 425 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Individual Differences in Conscious Experience is intended for readers with philosophical, psychological, or clinical interests in subjective experience. It addresses some difficult but important issues in the study of consciousness, subconsciousness, and self-consciousness. The book’s fourteen chapters are written by renowned, pioneering researchers who, collectively, have published more than fifty books and more than one thousand journal articles. The editors’ introductory chapter frames the book’s subtext: that mind-brain theories embodying the constraints of individual differences in subjective experience should be given greater credence than nomothetic theories ignoring those constraints. The next five chapters describe research and theory pertaining to individual differences in conscious sensations — specifically, individual differences in pain perception, phantom limbs, gustatory sensations, and mental imagery. Then, two succeeding chapters focus on individual differences in subconsciousness. The final six chapters address individual differences in altered states of self-consciousness — dreams, hypnotic phenomena, and various clinical syndromes. (Series B)

Book The Conscious Cultural Worker

Download or read book The Conscious Cultural Worker written by Khalilah Ali and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2024-04-01 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Conscious Cultural Worker: Counter-Narratives of Black Women Artivists as Radical Educators uses narrative inquiry and Black feminist and womanist pedagogy to look at the teaching identities and lived experiences of Black women artivist educators in the current neoliberal anti-woke moment. Their counter-narratives are presented as vignettes to look at a certain time in the lives of Black women artists who use rap, spoken word, or visual art to turn public places like bars, clubs, galleries, lounges, and alleys into unofficial educational spaces that the author calls "Communities of Reciprocity" (CoR). This book adds to what is known about situated learning, teacher identity, and the co-creation of communities of practice by focusing on the point of view of Black women as conscious culture workers. It does this by bringing attention to the fact that culture work is a kind of conversation between creatives as expert practitioners and audiences as spect-actors, who co-create liberatory educative texts. In this book, Black women "work" the culture by challenging hegemonic discourse and hidden curricula wherever people who want to learn come together.
