Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Conquest of the Coeur D'alenes, Spokanes and Palouses; The Expeditions of Colonels E. J: Steptoe and George Wright Against the Northern Indians in 1858 Meager and unauthenticated details of the story gained circulation among the early pioneers and were by them rehearsed from memory to those who came after them. This volume, the result of long research, was primarily suggested through a lingering love ofthe pioneer days. The pleasures that were woven into the thin mesh Of early day society and the occupations Of those first citizens, as well as the hardships and privations which came into the country hand in 'hand with the pioneer himself, are matters that have frequently passed in review. Of the writer's memory. They are Of a period Which Of itself constitutes an important epoch. From meditation upon these things has emanated the desire to place in the hands of the people the facts Of the events which made it possible to settle and develop this great, rich section of country in unbroken peace - of the time just beyond the real pioneer. Download or read book The Class of 1846 written by John C. Waugh and published by Ballantine Books. This book was released on 2010-12-29 with total page 673 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No single group of men at West Point--or possibly any academy--has been so indelibly written into history as the class of 1846. The names are legendary: Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson, George B. McClellan, Ambrose Powell Hill, Darius Nash Couch, George Edward Pickett, Cadmus Marcellus Wilcox, and George Stoneman. The class fought in three wars, produced twenty generals, and left the nation a lasting legacy of bravery, brilliance, and bloodshed. This fascinating, remarkably intimate chronicle traces the lives of these unforgettable men--their training, their personalities, and the events in which they made their names and met their fates. Drawing on letters, diaries, and personal accounts, John C. Waugh has written a collective biography of masterful proportions, as vivid and engrossing as fiction in its re-creation of these brilliant figures and their pivotal roles in American history.

Book A Little Matter of Genocide

Download or read book A Little Matter of Genocide written by Ward Churchill and published by City Lights Books. This book was released on 1997 with total page 554 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ward Churchill has achieved an unparalleled reputation as a scholar-activist and analyst of indigenous issues in North America. Here, he explores the history of holocaust and denial in this hemisphere, beginning with the arrival of Columbus and continuing on into the present. He frames the matter by examining both "revisionist" denial of the nazi-perpatrated Holocaust and the opposing claim of its exclusive "uniqueness," using the full scope of what happened in Europe as a backdrop against which to demonstrate that genocide is precisely what has been-and still is-carried out against the American Indians. Churchill lays bare the means by which many of these realities have remained hidden, how public understanding of this most monstrous of crimes has been subverted not only by its perpetrators and their beneficiaries but by the institutions and individuals who perceive advantages in the confusion. In particular, he outlines the reasons underlying the United States's 40-year refusal to ratify the Genocide Convention, as well as the implications of the attempt to exempt itself from compliance when it finally offered its "endorsement." In conclusion, Churchill proposes a more adequate and coherent definition of the crime as a basis for identifying, punishing, and preventing genocidal practices, wherever and whenever they occur. Ward Churchill (enrolled Keetoowah Cherokee) is Professor of American Indian Studies with the Department of Ethnic Studies at the University of Colorado-Boulder. A member of the American Indian Movement since 1972, he has been a leader of the Colorado chapter for the past fifteen years. Among his previous books have been Fantasies of a Master Race, Struggle for the Land, Since Predator Came, and From a Native Son.

Book Edward J Steptoe and the Indian Wars

Download or read book Edward J Steptoe and the Indian Wars written by Ron McFarland and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2016-02-11 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lieutenant Colonel Edward J. Steptoe's escape from encirclement by 1,000 Northern Plateau Indians in 1858 is a familiar story from the Indian Wars. Yet the details of the Battle of Pine Creek (or Tohotonimme) and its aftermath remain subjects of debate. Outnumbered six to one, Steptoe's 164 troops slipped away in the night. Newspapers called it a "disaster." A few weeks later, Colonel George Wright avenged the defeat and Steptoe, who had suffered a stroke months before the battle, lived his final years in relative obscurity in his native Virginia as the Civil War erupted. This definitive biography of Steptoe chronicles the career of a field officer who served nearly four years in the Second Seminole War, won commendation for gallantry during the Mexican War, performed admirably (though controversially) in the Utah Territory, undertook construction of forts at Walla Walla in the newly defined Washington Territory and engaged with various tribes throughout his deployments. His personal letters reveal a thoughtful, sensitive commander who came to question his choice of career even before his final battle.
