Book Lyautey and the French Conquest of Morocco

Download or read book Lyautey and the French Conquest of Morocco written by William A. Hoisington Jr and published by Palgrave Macmillan. This book was released on 1995-08-11 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lyautey and the French Conquest of Morocco describes and analyzes the method of colonial conquest and rule linked to the name of Marshal Louis-Hubert Lyautey (1854-1934), France's first resident-general in Morocco and the most famous of France's 20th-century overseas soldier-administrators. Lyautey popularized the notions of 'peaceful penetration' and 'indirect rule' as part of a grand colonial design of military pacification, economic development, political modernization and social betterment. For Lyautey imperialism could be a life-giving force for both Frenchmen and Moroccans alike and during his thirteen years as resident general he boldly promoted France's actions in Morocco as the 'highest form' of imperialism. This book traces the development of Lyautey's ideas on conquest and rule at home and abroad, and shows how they translated into practice. While there was much that was praiseworthy in Lyautey's approach to colonial matters, in the end force always remained more effective than anything else and, whether used gently or severely, it failed to stem Moroccan resistance to French rule. Based on archival material in Morocco and France, Lyautey and the French Conquest of Morocco is the first book to deal in a detailed manner with French pacification strategy in Morocco and with the mechanics of 'indirect rule' (always, in reality, rather more direct than indirect). It should be of great value to readers of 19th and 20th century French, European and North African history and to students of colonialism and imperialism.

Book Conquistadors of the Red City The Moroccan Conquest of the Songhay Empire

Download or read book Conquistadors of the Red City The Moroccan Conquest of the Songhay Empire written by Comer Plummer III and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2018-03-28 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conquistadors of the Red City: The Moroccan Conquest of the Songhay Empire recounts the ambitions of a sixteenth century Moroccan ruler to defy geography and send his army across the Sahara Desert in search of the elusive gold fields of West Africa. In destroying the empire of the Songhay, the Moroccans established a trans-Saharan state, but their quest for riches proved to be futile and ruinous, for themselves and for the entire region. This extraordinary chapter of African history is told through Moroccan and West African chroniclers, as well as Western travelers and hostages at the Moroccan imperial court in Marrakech. Their unique perspectives offer rare insight into one of the most important chapters in the history of early modern Africa, and the precursor of an even more devastating phase of the exploitation of the continent-the Atlantic slave trade.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In Morocco, nobody dies without a reason." -- Susan Gilson Miller, Harvard University In the years leading up to World War I, the Great Powers of Europe jostled one another for control over Morocco, the last sovereign nation in North Africa. France beat out its rivals and added Morocco to its vast colonial holdings through the use of diplomatic intrigue and undisguised force. But greed and ambition alone do not explain the complex story of imperialism in its entirety. Amid fears that Morocco was descending into anarchy, Third Republic France justified its bloody conquest through an appeal to a higher ideal. France's self-proclaimed "civilizing mission" eased some consciences but led to inevitable conflict and tragedy. Murder in Marrakesh relates the story of the early days of the French conquest of Morocco from a new perspective, that of Émile Mauchamp, a young French doctor, his compatriots, and some justifiably angry Moroccans. In 1905, the French foreign ministry sent Mauchamp to Marrakesh to open a charitable clinic. He died there less than two years later at the hands of a mob. Reviled by the Moroccans as a spy, Mauchamp became a martyr for the French. His death, a tragedy for some, created opportunity for others, and set into motion a chain of events that changed Morocco forever. As it reconstructs Mauchamp's life, this book touches on many themes -- medicine, magic, vengeance, violence, mourning, and memory. It also considers the wedge French colonialism drove between Morocco's Muslims and Jews. This singular episode and compelling human story provides a timely reflection on French-Moroccan relations, colonial pride, and the clash of civilizations.

Book Resistance in the Desert

Download or read book Resistance in the Desert written by Ross E. Dunn and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-05-01 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work, first published in 1977, is a study of African responses to European conquest in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. It centers on the Muslim pastoral tribes and oasis communities which inhabited southeastern Morocco, a semi-arid region on the northern fringe of the Sahara Desert. Between 1881 and 1912 the French army, advancing from Algeria, invaded and occupied this region. This book examines the decades of French conquest as an episode in African, rather than European, colonial or military history.

Book Twilight in the Lands of Disorder

Download or read book Twilight in the Lands of Disorder written by Comer Plummer, III and published by . This book was released on 2023-01-10 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Twilight in the Lands of Disorder: France, Spain and the Conquest of Morocco (1906-1927) describes the conquest and pacification Morocco, a kingdom that had, due to its strategic value, survived as an independent country until the end of the European rush to colonize Africa. That ended in 1906, when France, obsessed with protecting her imperium in Algeria, succeeded in bartering with her European competitors for supremacy in Unfortunately for the French, this arrangement required working with a junior partner, Spain, which was already installed along the northern coast of Morocco, and the consequences for her were nearly disastrous. While the French succeeded in bringing peace and development to their zone, Spanish irresolution and ineptitude unleashed several of rebellions, culminating with that of a coalition of Riffian tribes under the inspired leadership of Mohammad Abd el-Krim. The Riff War (1921-1926) began with the calamitous defeat of Spanish forces at Annual and ultimately carried into the French zone before the combined military might and France and Spain finally brought the tiny Riffian Republic to heal. While this conflict ended indigenous rule in Morocco, the conquerors would derive small satisfaction from their triumph; each would reap its bitter reward. And the Quixotic Mohammad Abd el-Krim became an inspiration to freedom fighters everywhere.

Download or read book Black Morocco written by Chouki El Hamel and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2014-02-27 with total page 534 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Black Morocco: A History of Slavery, Race, and Islam chronicles the experiences, identity and achievements of enslaved black people in Morocco from the sixteenth century to the beginning of the twentieth century. Chouki El Hamel argues that we cannot rely solely on Islamic ideology as the key to explain social relations and particularly the history of black slavery in the Muslim world, for this viewpoint yields an inaccurate historical record of the people, institutions and social practices of slavery in Northwest Africa. El Hamel focuses on black Moroccans' collective experience beginning with their enslavement to serve as the loyal army of the Sultan Isma'il. By the time the Sultan died in 1727, they had become a political force, making and unmaking rulers well into the nineteenth century. The emphasis on the political history of the black army is augmented by a close examination of the continuity of black Moroccan identity through the musical and cultural practices of the Gnawa.
