They do not only reflect mans perception of his environment but also represent his attempt to communicate intimately with the objects and events of his experiences. Book The Jewel Translucent S tra

Download or read book The Jewel Translucent S tra written by Johan Elverskog and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-11-29 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first full-fledged critical edition and historical study of the Erdeni Tunumal Sudur, the Mongolian history of Altan Khan and his descendants, offering a full-range English-written historical and literary evaluation of this unique and fairly reliable, but long neglected discovery in Mongolian studies. With transcription, word index and English translation, as well as extensive commentary on the historical events of Altan Khan’s reign, especially the 1550 attack on Beijing, the 1571 peace accord with the Ming, and the 1578 meeting with the Dalai Lama and the subsequent Buddhist conversion. In particular, the author shows how Altan Khan’s reformulation of the boundaries of Dayan Khan’s Mongol nation and state catalyzed the political fragmentation of the Mongols with dire consequences in relation to the rising Manchu state. Vital for a better understanding of Mongol history during the late Ming.

Book The Art of Medieval Jewelry

Download or read book The Art of Medieval Jewelry written by T.N. Pollio and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2021-09-14 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What are the origins of the imagery and designs on common jewelry and portable artwork between late antiquity and the Middle Ages? These dynamic centuries encompass the transformation of the Greco-Roman world into the nascent kingdoms and medieval states upon which most modern European nations are based. The choices of jewelry and other forms of personal expression among the lower classes in ancient times is notoriously difficult to contextualize for a number of reasons. Nonetheless, these precious articles were expressions of individual identity as well as signifiers of rites of passage. As such, they reflect not only the people who wore them, but also the social milieu and artistic trends at that moment in time. This new study assists in identifying the types, origins and routes of transmission of personal artwork, particularly finger rings, across Europe and Byzantium, an area of study that has been neglected in previous works. Some of this material represents the first time relevant research from Central and Eastern Europe has been translated and made available to the general reader in the English-speaking world.

Book excerpt: At 9:30AM people started coming into the church. Julia opened her handbag and, keeping the revolver out of sight, checked if its chamber was full of bullets: it was. When the priest asked John if he was ready to take Gail as his wedded wife, Julia remembered what David had told her to do before shooting, namely to release the safety latch. She had rehearsed that operation many times and so she did it without even looking into the handbag. There were many people around her now, but she couldn't wait any more because Gail was saying "yes" right then and turning toward John for her first kiss as his wife. Julia thought frantically: what had David told her to do before pulling the trigger? Oh yes, she remembered it now: she had to line up the gun-sight with the little bump at the end of the barrel, and when her target was aligned with gun-sight and the little bump, the only thing to do was to pull the trigger, that simple. She took out the gun

Download or read book Jewel in the Ashes written by Brian D. Ruppert and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2020-03-23 with total page 535 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing on the ninth to the fourteenth centuries, this study analyzes the ways in which relics functioned as material media for the interactions of Buddhist clerics, the imperial family, lay aristocrats, and warrior society and explores the multivocality of relics by dealing with specific historical examples. Brian Ruppert argues that relics offered means for reinforcing or subverting hierarchical relations. The author's critical literary and anthropological analyses attest to the prominence of relic veneration in government, in lay practice associated with the maintenance of the imperial line and warrior houses, and in the promotion of specific Buddhist sects in Japan.
