Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Complete Works of Brann, the Iconoclast, Vol. 1 In putting into permanent form the complete works of William Cowper Brann, twenty-one years after his deaths the sole purpose of the present publishers is to preserve in its entirety the genius of a writer whose work, though produced under the stress of journalism, is destined to endure as literature. Upon the issues discussed by Brann, the publishers take no sides; they do not stand as sponsors for, nor do they desire to appear in the light of either approving or disapproving his opinions or methods. They were friends and neighbors of many years' standing of the men and institutions mentioned in Brann's writings, but were in no way involved in the bitter controversies and deplorable events which led to Brann's untimely and dramatic death. The plan and arrangement of this twelve-volume set of Brann is simple. The first volume is composed of articles of various length gathered from miscellaneous sources, and includes some of the better known articles from The Iconoclast. Volume II to XI inclusive are the files of the Iconoclast (from February, 1895 to May, 1898, inclusive), with the matter arranged approximately as it appeared in the original publication. Volume XII contains the story of Brann's death and various biographical and critical articles from the press of the day, together with those of Brann's speeches and lectures which have been preserved. At the close of Volume XII you will find a complete index of subjects and of titled articles for the entire twelve volumes. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Complete Works of Brann, the Iconoclast, Vol. 6 There is probably nothing on earth "cuter" than a nigger baby; but, like other varieties of the genus "coon," they are not considered very valuable additions to society. In ante-bellum times nigger babies had a market value, and certain planters employed Kansas or Massachusetts overseers with a view to their multiplication; but under the new regime the advent of these young simians is regarded with unconcern. It was thought for a time - after Sherman's march to the sea - that the nigger baby would furnish a more or less happy solution of the much vexed "race problem"; that the blacks would, in a few generations, be faded out by fornication; but as the Caucasian became more fastidious in his tastes and substituted bikeing for coon-hunting, the hope of getting rid of Sambo by gradual absorption died a lingering death. We are not asked to believe that a renaissance of the old idea has been inaugurated under the auspices of the Baptist Missionary Society - due to the enterprise and industry of the Texas Superintendent. The Iconoclast devoutly hopes that such is not the case - it were mixing religion and politics and clearly unconstitutional. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Complete Works of Brann, the Iconoclast, Vol. 9 I shall presume to address you a communication regard ing an article appearing the April number of the icono clast, an article to which I must take exception King Charles the Martyr. The impression with me has been that the mission of your paper was to search for the truth concerning all things. After reading the above mentioned article the conclusion is irresistible that if truth really be your object, you go not far beyond your limited knowledge in quest of it. I must emphatically dissent from your statements regarding the origin of the Church of England. To all intelligent people, excepting the leaders of the Papal hierarchy, the claim of the Roman Church to priority and supremacy is absurd. To prove this let us consider briefly a few important facts in connection with the birth and spread of Christianity with which the Catho lic Church has been so prominently identified. It is cheer fully conceded by all Christians, regardless of sect, that 'jesus of Nazareth founded the Christian Church at Jeru salem about years ago. Catholics assert that after the resurrection, Christ remained on earth for forty days instructing his disciples. The New Testament records. They have seen a great light, and repented them in sack-cloth and ashes of having stoned the Rpubli can prophets. The Ethiops are the people, the white Democrats the millstone about the neck of Dixie. There appears to have been a veritable camp meeting revival of political honesty among the editors of the South's great diurnals. How much of this is due to the tearful jeremiads of Rev. Sam Jones, and how much to Mark Hanna's monev I will not presume to say; but the fact remains that the journals mentioned have deserted the white Democracy, gone over bag and baggage to the coon camp and are now striving to convince the world that the reconstruction era was a golden age, that since it passed the South has been dominated by professional thugs and political thieves. Cult wars with cult, and sect with sect, while all unite to damn the independent worshipper; yet every man who bows the knee or breathes a prayer to any God of whatso ever name; every Egyptian bending at Isis' fanes and every Phenician sacrificing unto Baal; every Gueber worship ing his god of fire, and every Catholic following the sacred cross; every Peruvian adoring the rising sun and every Methodist agonizing at the mourner's bench, is a member of the same great church. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Brann the Iconoclast, Vol. 1 of 2: A Collection of the Writings of W. C. Brann William Cowper Brann was born in Humboldt Township, Coles County, Illinois, January 4, 1855. He was not raised in the home of his parents, though his father, Rev. Noble Brann, survived him, and is still living. His mother having died when he was two and a half years old, he was within the next six months placed in the care of Mr. William Hawkins, a Coles County farmer, with whom he lived about ten years. As to his childhood experiences on the Hawkins' farm nothing is now known. They were probably such as are common to children raised in the country. Of Mr. Hawkins he always spoke kindly, referring to him as "Pa Hawkins." His nature was not suited to farm life, however, and he finally made up his mind to see more of the world, hence without ever having disclosed his resolution to any one, he quietly walked away one dark and cheerless night, carrying in a small box under his arm all that he then possessed, and leaving behind him the friends of his childhood in the only place he had ever known as his home, thus entering upon the active struggle of life at thirteen years of age. without friends, destitute of means, and almost entirely uneducated. The first position he obtained was that of bell boy in a hotel. Later on he learned to be a painter and grainer, then a printer, a reporter, and finally an editorial writer. He was energetic, industrious and painstaking in whatever he undertook to do, therefore always employed. Early in his smuggle he realized the need of an education, in the acquirement of which he applied himself with eager diligence. Nature had endowed him with keen perceptive powers, a retentive memory and great mental vigor, by means of which he soon accumulated considerable knowledge.
