Download or read book Language and Travel Guide to Romania written by Rosemary Rennon and published by Hippocrene Books. This book was released on 2007 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rosemary Rennon discovered Romania in 1993 when she went hunting for the small village where her father was born. She was captivated by its scenery and by the simplicity of a country just awakening from its long communist nightmare. Unfamiliar to many due to its long isolation, Romania is comprised of five distinct regions resulting from both their unique landscapes and their historical populations of Dacians, Romanians, Germans, Hungarians and Turks. In addition to its rolling green hills and valleys, with the arc of the Carpathian mountain chain in its centre, the country's southeastern region on the Black Sea provides a massive wildlife refuge, as well as miles of sandy beach resorts. Its cities are filled with outstanding architectural gems and modern activities. All this, plus a fascinating, turbulent history and the lovely Romanian tongue-considered by many to be the original romance language-belong to a culture one will never want to leave.

Download or read book Socially Engaged Art after Socialism written by Izabel Galliera and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2017-05-30 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reclaiming public life from the ideologies of both communist regimes and neoliberalism, their projects have harnessed the politically subversive potential of social relations based on trust, reciprocity and solidarity. Drawing on archival material and exclusive interviews, in this book Izabel Galliera traces the development of socially engaged art from the early 1990s to the present in Bulgaria, Hungary and Romania. She demonstrates that, in the early 1990s, projects were primarily created for exhibitions organized and funded by the Soros Centers for Contemporary Art. In the early 2000s, prior to Bulgaria, Hungary and Romania entering into the European Union, EU institutions likewise funded socially-conscious public art in the region. Today, socially engaged art is characterised by the proliferation of independent and often self-funded artists' initiatives in cities such as Sofia, Bucharest and Budapest.Focusing on the relationships between art, social capital and civil society, Galliera employs sociological and political theories to reveal that, while social capital is generally considered a mechanism of exclusion in the West, in post-socialist contexts it has been leveraged by artists and curators as a vital means of communication and action.
Download or read book Ten Years a Nomad written by Matthew Kepnes and published by Macmillan + ORM. This book was released on 2019-07-16 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Part memoir and part philosophical look at why we travel, filled with stories of Matt Kepnes' adventures abroad, an exploration of wanderlust and what it truly means to be a nomad. New York Times bestselling author of How to Travel the World on $50 a Day, Matthew Kepnes knows what it feels like to get the travel bug. After meeting some travelers on a trip to Thailand in 2005, he realized that living life meant more than simply meeting society's traditional milestones. Over 500,000 miles, 1,000 hostels, and 90 different countries later, Matt has compiled his favorite stories, experiences, and insights into this travel manifesto. Filled with the color and perspective that only hindsight and self-reflection can offer, these stories get to the real questions at the heart of wanderlust. Travel questions that transcend the basic "how-to," and plumb the depths of what drives us to travel — and what extended travel around the world can teach us about life, ourselves, and our place in the world. Ten Years a Nomad is a heartfelt comprehension of the insatiable craving for travel, unraveling the authenticity of being a vagabond, not for months but for a fulfilling decade.
