Book Atmospheric Energetics in Regions of Intense Convective Activity

Download or read book Atmospheric Energetics in Regions of Intense Convective Activity written by Henry E. Fuelberg and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Synoptic-scale budgets of kinetic and total potential energy are computed using 3- and 6-h data at nine times from NASA's fourth Atmospheric Variability Experiment conducted on 24-25 April 1975. Two intense squall lines occurred during the period. Energy budgets for areas as small as 8.0 x 1011 m2 that enclose regions of intense convection are shown to have systematic changes that relate to the life cycles of the convection. Some of the synoptic-scale energy processes associated with the convection are found to be larger than those observed in the vicinity of mature cyclones. Volumes enclosing intense convection are found to have large values of cross-contour conversion of potential to kinetic energy and large horizontal export of kinetic energy. Although small net vertical transport of kinetic energy is observed, values at individual layers indicate large upward transport. Transfer of kinetic energy from grid to subgrid scales of motion occurs in the volumes. Latent heat release is large in the middle and upper troposphere and is thought to be the cause of the observed cyclic changes in the budget terms. Total potential energy is found to be imported horizontally in the lower half of the atmosphere, transported aloft, and then exported horizontally. Although local changes of kinetic energy and total potential energy are small, interaction between volumes enclosing convection with surrounding larger volumes is quite large. Spatial fields of terms in the energy budget equations are shown at three times. These have good continuity and are closely related to the locations and intensities of the two squall lines.

Book Atmospheric Thermodynamics 2e

Download or read book Atmospheric Thermodynamics 2e written by Craig Bohren and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2023-05-01 with total page 609 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Atmospheric Thermodynamics provides a comprehensive treatment of a subject that can often be intimidating. The text analyses real-life problems and applications of the subject, alongside of guiding the reader through the fundamental basics and covering the first and second laws and the ideal gas law, followed by an emphasis on moist processes in Earth's atmosphere. Water in all its phases is a critical component of weather and the Earth's climate system. With user-friendly chapters that include energy conservation and water and its transformations, the authors write with a willingness to expose assumptions and approximations usually absent in other textbooks. History is woven into the text to provide a context for the time evolution of thermodynamics and its place in atmospheric science and demonstrating how physical reasoning leads to correct explanations of everyday phenomena. Many of the experiments described were done using inexpensive instruments to take advantage of the earth's atmosphere as a freely accessible thermodynamics library. This second edition provides updated treatments of atmospheric measurements and substantially expanded sections that include atmospheric applications of the first and second laws and energy exchange between humans and their atmospheric environment. With 400+ thought provoking problems and 350 references with annotated notes and further reading suggestions, this second edition provides a basic understanding of the fundamentals of this subject while still being a comprehensive reference guide for those working in the field of atmospheric and environmental sciences.

Book Review of the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management Air Quality Modeling in the Gulf of Mexico Region Study

Download or read book Review of the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management Air Quality Modeling in the Gulf of Mexico Region Study written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2020-01-28 with total page 73 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Emissions associated with oil and gas exploration, development, and production on the Gulf waters can result in increased levels of air pollutants that contribute to a range of air quality impacts in the Gulf of Mexico Region (GOMR). "Criteria air pollutants", such as carbon monoxide, lead, nitrogen dioxide, ozone, particulate matter, and sulfur dioxide, are considered harmful to public health and the environment. The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) manages the U.S. outer continental shelf oil and gas resources and is required to help manage air quality in the GOMR. Review of the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management "Air Quality Modeling in the Gulf of Mexico Region" Study reviews and provides feedback on the BOEM's Air Quality Modeling in the Gulf of Mexico Region Study. This independent technical review of the study explores whether the study meets its goals, accurately reflects the scientific literature, uses reasonable data and modeling analyses, approaches quantitative modeling appropriately, documents findings in a consistent, transparent, and credible way, and aligns with necessary guidelines.

Book Cold air Performance of Compressor drive Turbine of Department of Energy Upgraded Automobile Gas Turbine Engine 1 Volute manifold and Stator Performance

Download or read book Cold air Performance of Compressor drive Turbine of Department of Energy Upgraded Automobile Gas Turbine Engine 1 Volute manifold and Stator Performance written by and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aerodynamic performance of the inlet manifold and stator assembly of the compressor-drive turbine was experimentally determined with cold air as the working fluid. The investigation included measurements of mass flow and stator-exit fluid torque as well as radial surveys of total pressure and flow angle at the stator inlet and annulus surveys of total pressure and flow angle at the stator exit. The stator-exit aftermixed flow conditions and overall stator efficiency were obtained and compared with their design values and the experimental results from three other stators. In addition, an analysis was made to determine the constituent aerodynamic losses that made up the stator kinetic energy loss. (Author).
