Download or read book The Compleat Conductor written by Gunther Schuller and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1997-08-21 with total page 584 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A world-renowned conductor and composer who has lead most of the major orchestras in North America and Europe, a talented musician who has played under the batons of such luminaries as Toscanini and Walter, and an esteemed arranger, scholar, author, and educator, Gunther Schuller is without doubt a major figure in the music world. Now, in The Compleat Conductor, Schuller has penned a highly provocative critique of modern conducting, one that is certain to stir controversy. Indeed, in these pages he castigates many of this century's most venerated conductors for using the podium to indulge their own interpretive idiosyncrasies rather than devote themselves to reproducing the composer's stated and often painstakingly detailed intentions. Contrary to the average concert-goer's notion (all too often shared by the musicians as well) that conducting is an easily learned skill, Schuller argues here that conducting is "the most demanding, musically all embracing, and complex" task in the field of music performance. Conducting demands profound musical sense, agonizing hours of study, and unbending integrity. Most important, a conductor's overriding concern must be to present a composer's work faithfully and accurately, scrupulously following the score including especially dynamics and tempo markings with utmost respect and care. Alas, Schuller finds, rare is the conductor who faithfully adheres to a composer's wishes. To document this, Schuller painstakingly compares hundreds of performances and recordings with the original scores of eight major compositions: Beethoven's fifth and seventh symphonies, Schumann's second (last movement only), Brahms's first and fourth, Tchaikovsky's sixth, Strauss's "Till Eulenspiegel" and Ravel's "Daphnis et Chloe, Second Suite." Illustrating his points with numerous musical examples, Schuller reveals exactly where conductors have done well and where they have mangled the composer's work. As he does so, he also illuminates the interpretive styles of many of our most celebrated conductors, offering pithy observations that range from blistering criticism of Leonard Bernstein ("one of the world's most histrionic and exhibitionist conductors") to effusive praise of Carlos Kleiber (who "is so unique, so remarkable, so outstanding that one can only describe him as a phenomenon"). Along the way, he debunks many of the music world's most enduring myths (such as the notion that most of Beethoven's metronome markings were "wrong" or "unplayable," or that Schumann was a poor orchestrator) and takes on the "cultish clan" of period instrument performers, observing that many of their claims are "totally spurious and chimeric." In his epilogue, Schuller sets forth clear guidelines for conductors that he believes will help steer them away from self indulgence towards the correct realization of great art. Courageous, eloquent, and brilliantly insightful, The Compleat Conductor throws down the gauntlet to conductors worldwide. It is a controversial book that the music world will be debating for many years to come.

Download or read book The Compleat Housewife written by Eliza Smith and published by Andrews Mcmeel+ORM. This book was released on 2012-10-16 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in England, this kitchen reference became available to colonial American housewives when it was printed in Williamsburg, Virginia is 1742. Originally published in London in 1727, The Compleat Housewife was the first cookbook printed in the United States. William Parks, a Virginia printer, printed and sold the cookbook believing there would be a strong market for it among Virginia housewives who wanted to keep up with the latest London fashions—the book was a best-seller there. Parks did make some attempt to Americanize it, deleting certain recipes “the ingredients or material for which are not to be had in this country,” but for the most part, the book was not adjusted to American kitchens. Even so, it became the first cookery best seller in the New World, and Parks’s major book publication. Author Eliza Smith described her book on the title page as “Being a collection of several hundred approved receipts, in cookery, pastry, confectionery, preserving, pickles, cakes, creams, jellies, made wines, cordials. And also bills of fare for every month of the year. To which is added, a collection of nearly two hundred family receipts of medicines; viz. drinks, syrups, salves, ointments, and many other things of sovereign and approved efficacy in most distempers, pains, aches, wounds, sores, etc. never before made publick in these parts; fit either for private families, or such public-spirited gentlewomen as would be beneficent to their poor neighbours.” The recipes are easy to understand and cover everything from 50 recipes for pickling everything from nasturtium buds to pigeons to “lifting a swan, breaking a deer, and splating a pike,” indicating the importance of understanding how to prepare English game. The book also includes diagrams for positioning serving dishes to create an attractive table display.

Download or read book A Hobo s Son and an Orphan Girl written by Bob Bristow and published by Dorrance Publishing. This book was released on 2024-06-06 with total page 759 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book started out as a set of adventure stories that have been published locally in several outdoor newsletters. These stories were so well received that the adventures in other parts of the life of the author and his family were added. A love story naturally evolved because that was what kept them going and led them from the wilderness where they grew up to the big cities working in politics, aerospace, and other advanced technologies. They combined this “city work” with many kinds of adventures, mostly adventures in wild and unexplored mountains. The love became obvious as Bob struggled for over 50 years to satisfy a promise he made to a 13-year-old girl in grade school: “Someday I will build you a castle on a mountain!” The book is interesting because it describes a lifetime of outdoor adventures and the effort of two kids to stay alive and progress up the social ladder. The relevant message is that two very poor kids at the bottom of the social ladder can not only survive but rise to the top. The story is unique because the adventures have been experienced by no one else. From Bob falling off an 80-foot cliff, to Luci battling a new form of cancer that was supposed to take her life. Readers should take away a good feeling reading about successfully living through many adventures in the mountains and in social life. About the Author Bob Bristow has a BS in Mechanical Engineering, an MS in aeronautical Engineering, and all PhD coursework completed in Aerospace Engineering. He worked for Boeing for over 60 years where he built and ran his own research lab. He was an elder in his church and was involved in many professional organizations. Bob enjoys skiing, scuba diving, mountain climbing, fishing, and hunting. He is most passionate about prospecting and mining.
