Book Comparative Vertebrate Reproduction

Download or read book Comparative Vertebrate Reproduction written by Julian Lombardi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1998-11-30 with total page 498 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Comparative Vertebrate Reproduction is the only comprehensive textbook covering major topics in the reproductive biology of vertebrates, from sexuality and gametogenesis to reproductive ecology and life history tactics. The work draws heavily on recent reviews and papers while placing topics in a historical context and conceptual framework. In addition, the author provides detailed comparative surveys of each of the major topics discussed. Comparative Vertebrate Reproduction has been written as a textbook for upper-level undergraduate and graduate-level students in biology, zoology, physiology, animal science, and veterinary medicine. The work also serves as an excellent reference for researchers in medical and veterinary schools working in reproductive medicine.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 7 If so, the individual members of each class thus identified could then be subjected to a more profound pharmacokinetic analysis. In other words, we had to determine first which hormone protects against which drug, before we could explore how it did this. We had to know first that a hormone has adaptive value before we could ask whether this is due to a syntoxic or a catatoxic mechanism. Such observations, as the fact that an indomethacin-induced intestinal ulcer can be prevented by ethylestrenol, orthat cortisol aggravates certain infections, reveal nothing about how these hormones work; but only findings of this type can tell us where further research would be rewarding. Of course, scientists can rarely identify by direct observation the tbings that they are looking for; most of the time they have to be guided by indirect indices. The ebernist often first detects a compound, or even a particular functional group in its molecule, by inference from a color reaction, a revealing X-ray diffraction pattern or the formation of a characteristic precipitate. The physician must first suspect the presence of a microbe through certain clinical signs and symptoms before he can verify his diagnosis by looking for a particular organism. It is perhaps not too daring to hope that in our first efforts to clarify the role of hormones in resistance, simple, directly visible indicators might also serve us best.

Book Patterns of Vertebrate Biology

Download or read book Patterns of Vertebrate Biology written by E.W. Jr. Jameson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 485 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book grew from a series of lectures on vertebrate natural history. The topics have been developed over a period of nearly 30 years, and today scarcely resemble the original subject matter. The progress is primarily technical. Some concepts provide a synthetic framework for viewing much modern research, but many of these concepts either date from Darwin or have developed from obser vations of later students. Animal science courses follow a sequential pattern in which there are three discrete levels of undergraduate instruction. Initially, students study subject mat ter contained in such courses as biology and general zoology. These courses intro duce students to animal phylogeny, basic plans of morphology and certain phys iological aspects; incidental to these subjects the student acquires a broad zoological vocabulary. At the other end of the academic spectrum are courses that emphasize synthe sis and theory: evolution, zoogeography, behavior and ecology are important courses whose role is to explore the relationships of various aspects of the physical and biological world. In these courses theory and analysis prevail. They are not, however, essentially "subject matter" courses with distinct bodies of knowledge.

Book International Review of General and Experimental Zoology

Download or read book International Review of General and Experimental Zoology written by William J. L. Felts and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 457 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: International Review of General and Experimental Zoology, Volume 2 is a collection of world literature concerning developments in general and experimental zoology. This book is composed of six chapters, and begins with a survey of the biochemical and serological techniques and their application in experimental taxonomy. The succeeding chapters review the field of general and comparative endocrinology in lower vertebrates, as well as the problems of understanding the fine structure of the synaptic cleft of presumed chemically transmitting synapses. These topics are followed by discussions on structural and functional aspects of the avian lungs and air sacs; the metabolic aspect of heat transfer in biological systems; and the external energy transfer from the organism to the surrounding environment. The final chapter focuses on the experimental studies of neurocranium morphology and growth. This book will prove useful to zoologists and taxonomists.
