Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this study, Andrew J. Schmutzer puts his hand to an in-depth study of the Creation Mandate, known within Reformed theology as the Cultural Mandate. His analysis focuses on key texts of God's blessing in Genesis 1-11. In particular, Schmutzer explores the theological significance of Genesis 1:28 using a biblical-theological approach sensitive to the biblical literature. Delving into such issues as the nature of divine blessing, humankind's royal stewardship, and the role of the image of God, this study draws the reader back to the biblical text as the "lead carriage" for foundational questions in contemporary faith. The result is theological "grist," primed to address the related issues of ecological crisis, social oppression, gender studies, and eco-theology. How one understands the Creation Mandate has serious implications. Be Fruitful and Multiply provides a sharp tool to help address these serious issues.

Book The Bible and Jews in Medieval Spain

Download or read book The Bible and Jews in Medieval Spain written by Norman Roth and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-03-30 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bible and Jews in Medieval Spain examines the grammatical, exegetical, philosophical and mystical interpretations of the Bible that took place in Spain during the medieval period. The Bible was the foundation of Jewish culture in medieval Spain. Following the scientific analysis of Hebrew grammar which emerged in al-Andalus in the ninth and tenth centuries, biblical exegesis broke free of homiletic interpretation and explored the text on grammatical and contextual terms. While some of the earliest commentary was in Arabic, scholars began using Hebrew more regularly during this period. The first complete biblical commentaries in Hebrew were written by Abraham Ibn ‘Ezra, and this set the standard for the generations that followed. This book analyses the approach and unique contributions of these commentaries, moving on to those of later Christian Spain, including the Qimhi family, Nahmanides and his followers and the esoteric-mystical tradition. Major topics in the commentaries are compared and contrasted. Thus, a unified picture of the whole fabric of Hebrew commentary in medieval Spain emerges. In addition, the book describes the many Spanish Jewish biblical manuscripts that have remained and details the history of printed editions and Spanish translations (for Jews and Christians) by medieval Spanish Jews. This book will appeal to scholars and students of medieval Spain, as well as those interested in the history of religion and cultural history.

Book Be Fertile and Increase Fill the Earth and Master It

Download or read book Be Fertile and Increase Fill the Earth and Master It written by Jeremy Cohen and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2019-05-15 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This innovative, interdisciplinary book reconstructs the career of Genesis 1:28 ("Be fertile and increase, fill the earth and master it...") in Judaism and Christianity, from antiquity through the Reformation. Jeremy Cohen tracks the text through all the Jewish and Christian sources in which it figures significantly—in law, exegesis, homily, theology, mysticism, philosophy, and even vernacular poetry. In his view, the verse situates man and woman on a cosmic frontier, midway between the angelic and the bestial, charging them with singular responsibilities that bear directly on Jewish and Christian ideas of God's "chosen people."

Book Commentary On Genesis 1 1 11 26

Download or read book Commentary On Genesis 1 1 11 26 written by D.J. Letscher and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2020-01-28 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As no part of the Bible is to be considered more important than any other part and there are no words of Scripture that we can do without, the words of Genesis 1:1""11:26 are not considered any more or less important or noteworthy than another set of eleven chapters randomly found in Scripture. These eleven chapters do, however, form the beginning of God's word to us and we are presented with history on a universal scale. In my opinion, it is the most sensible place to begin learning about our heavenly Father and about His eternal plan. This approach will give a Bible student the fundamental knowledge that is essential to understanding all remaining Scripture. This commentary will cover topics such as: 1. The Creation of the Heaven and the Earth by God in Eternity Past (Gen. 1:1) and the Ruin in which they Ended (Gen. 1:2). 2. The Six Days of Creation in Time Present (Gen. 1:2""31), Including the (Sixth Day) Creation of all "mankind," both "male and female" (Gen. 1:27), and the Blessing by God of the Seventh Day (Gen. 2:1""3). 3. The Generations of the Heavens and of the Earth (Gen. 2:4-4:26). 4. The (Sixth Day) Formation of Adam (Gen. 2:7), the Creation of Eve (Gen. 2:22), and Their Stay in the Garden of Eden (2:8-25). 5. The Beguiling of Adam and Eve by Satan (Gen. 3:1-7); the Punishment Determined by God upon Satan, Eve, and Adam (Gen. 3:8-24). 6. The Promise of a Savior (Gen. 3:15). 7. The Birth of Cain and Abel; the Murder of Abel by Cain, and the Lineage of Cain (Gen. 4:1-24). 8. The Lineage of Adam and the Antediluvian, or Pre-Flood, Patriarchs (Gen. 5:1-31). 9. The Fallen Angels and their Progeny; the Giants (Gen. 6:1-7). 10. Grace found only in Noah (Gen. 6:8). 11. The Pedigree of Noah; the Ark, and the Flood (Gen. 6:9-9:29). 12. The Generations of the Sons of Noah (Gen. 10:1-31). 13. Nimrod and the Tower of Babel (Gen. 11:1-9). 14. The Generations of Shem (Gen. 11:10-26). In addition, below each verse of the eleven chapters covered selected words will be highlighted and both the equivalent Hebrew translation of the word, as well as its definition will be given. *Definitions given are from The New Strong's Exhaustive Concordance of the Bible

The second part deals with the major themes in the teachings of the Kabbalah, such as the doctrine of the Sefirot, the Sitra–Ahra—good and evil, the creation of the world, the status of the Torah and its commandments, the doctrine of the soul and the transmigration of souls. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Glory to Glory is a contemporary study of the reality of Jehovah-Elyon, the Most High of heaven and earth. It takes into consideration a variety of views, including that of classical Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, early African, and Judaism. It follows Jehovah from before the creation of the world to the final judgment and the New Heaven and New Earth. It also examines closely the functioning of Lucifer as the morning star and after his rebellion. The book essentially presents Jehovah-Elyon as the one "who is great and greatly to be praised, whose greatness is unsearchable." It presents the Father, whose "name is blessed and exalted above all blessing and praise," whose "name alone is excellent, whose glory is above the heaven and the earth," and who is the praise of all the saints.

This book was released on 2014-10-27 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines a wide range of theologians, philosophers, and exegetes who share a passionate engagement with Maimonides, assaulting, adopting, subverting, or adapting his philosophical and jurisprudential thought. This ongoing enterprise is critical to any appreciation of the broader scope of Jewish law, philosophy, biblical interpretation, and Kabbalah.

Book Nachmanides

  • Author : Israel Drazin

Download or read book Nachmanides written by Israel Drazin and published by Gefen Books. This book was released on 2018-10-15 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nachmanides was and still is a highly respected scholar. Yet despite his brilliance he had ideas that many modern Jews are unable to accept. He was the first person who contended that the Bible, Targum Onkelos, and the other Aramaic translations of the Bible contained mystical teachings. In this volume, Dr. Drazin reveals some unusual and generally unknown facts about the revered sage and demonstrates that his mystical notions and his stands on issues such as medicine, magic, astrology, divination, life after death, the land of Israel, women, angels, hell, demons, and even God are not the normative views of most modern Jews. This fresh look at one of Judaism's most venerated sages asks and answers provocative questions on the nature of Nachmanides' work and its role in Jewish thought.
