Book excerpt: Excerpt from The: Comfort of the Hills, and Other Poems In the year 1882 I printed the first of six small volumes of verse. The editions of each were limited to two or three hundred copies, with an average sale of about fifty copies. Having generously given away the rest, I am amused to find that these volumes are now sought for by the collector of first editions and are occasionally bringing absurd prices. This present collection is the only one I have not paid for outright and is a venture of my publishers which speaks well for their courage. The three poems at the beginning of this volume lay for many years in my portfolios. "The Comfort of the Hills" is now publicly printed for the first time. The new uplifting book from Matt Haig, the #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Midnight Library, for anyone in search of hope, looking for a path to a more meaningful life, or in need of a little encouragement. Named by The Washington Post as one of the best feel-good books of 2021. “It is a strange paradox, that many of the clearest, most comforting life lessons are learnt while we are at our lowest. But then we never think about food more than when we are hungry and we never think about life rafts more than when we are thrown overboard.” THE COMFORT BOOK is Haig’s life raft: it’s a collection of notes, lists, and stories written over a span of several years that originally served as gentle reminders to Haig’s future self that things are not always as dark as they may seem. Incorporating a diverse array of sources from across the world, history, science, and his own experiences, Haig offers warmth and reassurance, reminding us to slow down and appreciate the beauty and unpredictability of existence.

Book excerpt: Angela Voras-Hills’s Louder Birds, her debut collection of poetry, is a beautiful study of the natural world, motherhood, and the inherent desire for meaning. This collection of complex lyric poems holds a haunting absence at its center, an absence that is “impossible to navigate.” Yet Voras-Hills presses on, untangling the distinctions that surround her (human and animal, domestic and wild) with both bravery and respect. She writes, “The boundaries between home and the road / are insecure: it’s impossible to navigate this landscape. / We’ve all been in the presence of something dark / and have chosen not to seek shelter.” As the poet hones in on naming the void, her surroundings grow more threatening—but not once does she surrender or turn back. Voras-Hills’s poems are smart enough to know the distinctions themselves are tenuous at best, and wise enough to know that we must always pay our dues to the world beyond our door. Wondrous, ruminative, and revelatory, Louder Birds is a collection that is not to be missed.

In a collection of true stories and family recipes, Whetstone shares anecdotes that provide insight into her life growing up in the popular resort mecca of the Midwest, Rockaway Beach, during the 1950’s and 1960’s and the lives of guests who visited the family resort during that time. While transporting others on a nostalgic trip back to a simpler time, Whetstone details how unselfish acts of sacrifice and kindness promoted healthy and lasting bonds among relatives and friends. She shares the ups and downs in her teenage relationships and offers a glimpse into her close walk with Jesus Christ. Included are recipes that have been passed down in her family for more than a hundred years, providing a backdrop to her delightful stories. “These inspired stories of faith, family, friends, and community will touch your heart. They evoke memories of the joy and blessing of my own growing up years in Ozark Mountain Country.” —Edd Akers, Mayor, City of Branson

Book The Comfort of Our Kind

Download or read book The Comfort of Our Kind written by Tom Stoner and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2008-03-18 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Situated between two mountain ridges, the New England town of Franklin Notch celebrates its history and the characters who have forged it. The cornerstone of its heritage is Talbert’s Treaty, an eighteenth-century agreement between the original settlers and the Sagaweh Indian nation---as discovered by local historian Wes Moffatt, ex-host of a regionally famous kiddie TV show. The Comfort of Our Kind is narrated by Daniel “Boone” Moffatt, Wes’s oldest son and local chief of police, who describes life with his sister, Veronica, a misanthropic nurse with a weakness for Xanax; his brother, Reggie, a disgraced sportscaster who has been living undetected in Cinderella’s Castle; his mother, a mystic ex-nun (who everyone still calls “Sister”); and his father, who has just been accused of inventing bad history by concocting Talbert’s Treaty and most of the local lore. As children, Boone, Veronica, and Reggie were trained by their mother’s puzzling bedtime stories to serve in God’s Army of Saints and “fight for Goodness on earth.” Now, as adults, they search for their gifts of Faith, Hope, and Grace in a parade of life-altering adventures while struggling with the presence of evil in the world. Along the way, they collide with a collection of characters, including a serial killer, a Zenlike naturalist doctor, a genius Mafia princess, phony Native Americans, and the Devil himself in various incarnations of human vanity. Against the deadline of Wes and Sister’s fiftieth wedding anniversary and Boone’s apocalyptic seventh visit from the Devil, the Moffatt family struggles to unite as a force of goodness and to reclaim the respect of their neighbors and friends. Reminiscent of Lake Wobegon Days and The Witches of Eastwick, The Comfort of Our Kind is an unpredictable, quirky tale in which each character’s spirituality is tested in the overlay between earthy mysticism and raucous fantasy. Praise for The Comfort of Our Kind: “This fun debut novel by story writer Stoner chronicles the tribulations of a family caught in a war between good and evil in Franklin Notch, N.H. Stoner’s storytelling has a lot of Wes Anderson elements and should find a readership among those into the folksy, absurd and poignant.” --Publishers Weekly "A comic tale of a New England family battling personal weakness and the Devil….Stoner’s characters are appealing, and the multiple subplots will hold readers’ interest…amicable mix of comedy, mysticism and earnest spirituality." --Kirkus Reviews

Book A Life in the Hills

Download or read book A Life in the Hills written by Katharine Stewart and published by Birlinn Ltd. This book was released on 2018-08-23 with total page 655 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Katharine Stewart, who died in 2013, was one of Scotland's best-loved writers on rural life in the Highlands. A Croft in the Hills, her first book, tells the story of how a couple and their young daughter, fresh from city life, took over a remote hill croft near Loch Ness and made a living from it. Full of warm personal insights, good humour and a love of living things, it has become a classic and has rarely been out of print since it was first published in 1960. This omnibus gathers A Croft in the Hills together with some of Katharine's later books: A Garden in the Hills, describing a year in the life of her Highland garden; A School in the Hills, a vivid history of the school at Abriachan which eventually became the Stewarts' family home; and The Post in the Hills, which tells the dramatic story of the postal service in the Highlands, from the point of view of Katharine's later role as postmistress of the smallest post office in Scotland, run from the porch of her Abriachan schoolhouse. Each of these books glows with what Neil Gunn described as 'its unusual quality, its brightness and its wisdom'. The omnibus will bring the grace, charm and wisdom of Katharine Stewart's writing to a new generation of readers.
