Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume holds a datelist of 476 radiocarbon determinations carried out between 2002 and 2004 in support of research funded by English Heritage through the Aggregates Levy Sustainability Fund. It contains supporting information about the samples and the sites producing them, a comprehensive bibliography, and two indexes for reference and analysis. An introduction provides information about the scientific dating undertaken, and methods used for the analyses reported. Details of technical reports available for programmes of luminescence dating and amino-acid racemization funded under this scheme are also provided. The datelist has been collated from information provided by the submitters of samples and the dating laboratories, in order to provide easy access to raw scientific and contextual data which may be used in further research. Many of the sites and projects from which dates have been obtained are published, or are in the process of publication. Full references are given to these reports for those requiring further detail.

Book Radiocarbon Dates

Download or read book Radiocarbon Dates written by and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 2014-06-30 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume holds a datelist of radiocarbon determinations carried out between 1970 and 1982 on behalf of the Ancient Monuments Laboratory, now part of English Heritage. It also contains supporting information about the samples and the sites producing them, a comprehensive bibliography, and three indexes for reference and analysis. The datelist has been collated to give access to a large body of information which, although mostly published elsewhere, has never before been accessible in a consistent form. When these dates were produced, high-precision calibration was not possible; now that this is available all dates have been converted, thus giving archaeologists and others using radiocarbon dates the opportunity to review their dating results in the light of this calibration, and with hindsight. The indexes order the complex information contained in the datelist by HAR numbers and by true calendar dates.

Book The Desert Fayum Reinvestigated

Download or read book The Desert Fayum Reinvestigated written by Simon J. Holdaway and published by Cotsen Institute of Archaeology Press. This book was released on 2017-12-31 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Neolithic is thought to have arrived in Egypt via diffusion from an origin in southwest Asia, relatively late compared to neighboring locations. The authors suggest an alternative approach to understanding the development of food production in Egypt based on the results of new fieldwork in the Fayum. They provide the results of a detailed study of the Fayum archaeological landscape interpretable at different temporal and spatial scales, using an expanded version of low-level food production to organize observations concerning paleoenvironment, socioeconomy, settlement, and mobility. While domestic plants and animals were indeed introduced from elsewhere, when a number of aspects of the archaeological record are compared, a settlement system is suggested that has no obvious analogues with the Neolithic in southwest Asia. The results obtained from the Fayum are used to assess other contemporary sites in Egypt.

Book Preventing and Removing Contamination in a Natural Radiocarbon Sample Preparation Laboratory

Download or read book Preventing and Removing Contamination in a Natural Radiocarbon Sample Preparation Laboratory written by and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The introduction of elevated 14C contamination into a natural radiocarbon sample preparation laboratory can occur through many different pathways. The most difficult to control is the introduction of contaminated samples from outside labs. Laboratories can remain 14C contaminated as a result of earlier tracer based research, even if ''hot'' work has not occurred in the laboratories in decades. Prior to accepting samples from outside collaborators, it is recommended that the collaborators test their labs for 14C contamination. Any surface in a lab that has high use by multiple people has the potential to be contaminated. The standard procedure for determining whether a collaborator's lab is contaminated consists of swiping lab surfaces with small glass fiber filters wetted with alcohol and measuring them for 14C content using AMS. Volatile 14C can be detected by using aerosol monitors consisting of fine soot that is depleted in 14C. These monitors can be set out in the laboratory in question to check for volatile 14C contamination. In the event that a hot sample is introduced in the natural radiocarbon sample prep laboratory, all sample submission should be stopped until the lab is declared clean. Samples already being processed should be completed along with 14C depleted material and measured by AMS. This will help determine if the contaminated samples have affected other samples in the laboratory. After a contamination event, the laboratory and associated equipment requires cleaning or disposal. All surfaces and equipment should be wiped down with acetone or ethanol. All chemicals in use should be disposed of in the appropriate waste containers and those waste containers removed from the lab. Once the natural radiocarbon laboratory has been thoroughly ''cleaned'', several background samples consisting of 14C depleted material should be processed through the lab and measured by AMS before unknown samples are processed again.
