Book The Collected Young Readers Fiction of E Nesbit Volume 4

Download or read book The Collected Young Readers Fiction of E Nesbit Volume 4 written by E. Nesbit and published by Leonaur Limited. This book was released on 2015-11-07 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two complementing novels of fantastic adventure for young readers in one volume There can be little doubt that contemporary authors of children's fiction whose stories place ordinary children in tales of high adventure, in fantastical lands populated by exotic and mythical characters and creatures, owe an abiding debt to Edith Nesbit. It is widely accepted that she originated this form of fiction for the young, and has left us not only her own classics such as 'Five Children and It' and 'The Phoenix and the Carpet, ' but also potentially offered inspiration for perennial favourites by other writers from, 'The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe' to the internationally successful Harry Potter series. This fourth special volume of her stories from Leonaur brings together 'The Enchanted Castle' and 'The Magic City.' Although not strictly part of a series these two books have a common theme which is central to the power and potential for imagination in children's play. Young heroes and heroines embark on their adventures in real life places which are then magically transformed into fantastic realms. As always these novels offer mature readers a nostalgic passport to more innocent times and introduce young readers to Edith Nesbit's wonderfully crafted descriptive and evocative but economic prose. Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket; our hardbacks are cloth bound and feature gold foil lettering on their spines and fabric head and tail bands.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three wonderful volumes of classic, fantastical childrens fiction Everyone familiar with children's fiction has heard of Edith Nesbit, who is rightly acclaimed as the first modern writer for children and the originator of the children's adventure story. Her influence on other children's writers, including those active and popular today is undeniable, not least because her stories feature believable contemporary children journeying to imaginary worlds and times for adventures with fantastical creatures and magical objects. Of consistently high quality, her writing is enthralling, direct and immediately engaging-so much so that many adults remember them fondly and re-read them throughout their lives. Leonaur has gathered together the three principal series of Nesbit's fiction in good value editions for new readers and for those for whom their nostalgia is irresistible. The Psammead Adventures, of course, feature the magical but truculent wish granting sand-fairy discovered in a gravel-pit. The Mouldiwarp Adventures continue in similar vein as the fantastical Mouldiwarp assists two children travel through time to find a lost fortune. The wonderful Bastable series sees the widowed Oswald Bastable and his children hunting for treasure to restore their family fortunes. These three Leonaur volumes of a tales from more innocent age will be a joy to read, to read to others and to own. Illustrated and thoroughly recommended. Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket; our hardbacks are cloth bound and feature gold foil lettering on their spines and fabric head and tail bands.

Download or read book The Life and Loves of E Nesbit written by Eleanor Fitzsimons and published by Abrams. This book was released on 2019-10-08 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Sunday Times Best Book of the Year: The “informative and entertaining” first major biography of the trailblazing, controversial children’s author (The Washington Post). Born in 1858, Edith Nesbit is today considered the first modern writer for children and the inventor of the children’s adventure story. In The Life and Loves of E. Nesbit, award-winning biographer Eleanor Fitzsimons uncovers the little-known details of her life, introducing readers to the Fabian Society cofounder and fabulous socialite who hosted legendary parties and had admirers by the dozen, including George Bernard Shaw. Through Nesbit’s letters and archival research, Fitzsimons reveals “E.” to have been a prolific lecturer and writer on socialism and shows how Nesbit incorporated these ideas into her writing, thereby influencing a generation of children—an aspect of her literary legacy never before examined. Fitzsimons’s riveting biography brings new light to the life and works of this remarkable writer and woman. “Meticulous and invaluable...exceptionally illuminating and detailed.” —The Wall Street Journal “Fitzsimons handily reassembles the hundreds of intricate, idiosyncratic parts of the miraculous E. Nesbit machine.” —The New York Times Book Review “I’ve always loved the work of E. Nesbit—The Railway Children and Five Children and It are my favorites—but I knew nothing about the extraordinary, surprising life of this great figure in children’s literature . . . so gripping that I read [it] in two days.” —Gretchen Rubin, #1 New York Times-bestsellingauthor of The Happiness Project “A charming, lively, and old-fashioned biography . . . highly readable.” —Publishers Weekly “A terrific book.” —Neil Gaiman

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A shining Classic Children NovelLike Nesbit's The Railway Children, the story begins when a group of children move from London to the countryside of Kent. The five children - Robert, Anthea, Cyril, Jane, and their baby brother, known as the Lamb - are playing in a gravel pit when they uncover a rather grumpy, ugly, and occasionally malevolent Psammead or sand-fairy, who has the ability to grant wishes. He persuades the children to take one wish each day to be shared among them, with the caveat that the wishes will turn to stone at sunset. This, apparently, used to be the rule in the Stone Age, when all that children wished for was food, the bones of which then became fossils. The five children's first wish is to be "as beautiful as the day". The wish ends at sunset and its effects simply vanish, leading the Psammead to observe that some wishes are too fanciful to be changed to stone. Celebrated for many generations, Five Children and It has been able to sustain its magical element through its lovable characters and the clear portrayal of the ingenuous wishes. Download or read book The Children s Book written by A. S. Byatt and published by Vintage Canada. This book was released on 2009-11-03 with total page 626 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the renowned author of Possession, The Children’s Book is the absorbing story of the close of what has been called the Edwardian summer: the deceptively languid, blissful period that ended with the cataclysmic destruction of World War I. In this compelling novel, A.S. Byatt summons up a whole era, revealing that beneath its golden surface lay tensions that would explode into war, revolution and unbelievable change — for the generation that came of age before 1914 and, most of all, for their children. The novel centres around Olive Wellwood, a fairy tale writer, and her circle, which includes the brilliant, erratic craftsman Benedict Fludd and his apprentice Phillip Warren, a runaway from the poverty of the Potteries; Prosper Cain, the soldier who directs what will become the Victoria and Albert Museum; Olive’s brother-in-law Basil Wellwood, an officer of the Bank of England; and many others from every layer of society. A.S. Byatt traces their lives in intimate detail and moves between generations, following the children who must choose whether to follow the roles expected of them or stand up to their parents’ “porcelain socialism.” Olive’s daughter Dorothy wishes to become a doctor, while her other daughter, Hedda, wants to fight for votes for women. Her son Tom, sent to an upper-class school, wants nothing more than to spend time in the woods, tracking birds and foxes. Her nephew Charles becomes embroiled with German-influenced revolutionaries. Their portraits connect the political issues at the heart of nascent feminism and socialism with grave personal dilemmas, interlacing until The Children’s Book becomes a perfect depiction of an entire world. Olive is a fairy tale writer in the era of Peter Pan and Kenneth Grahame’s The Wind In the Willows, not long after Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. At a time when children in England suffered deprivation by the millions, the concept of childhood was being refined and elaborated in ways that still influence us today. For each of her children, Olive writes a special, private book, bound in a different colour and placed on a shelf; when these same children are ferried off into the unremitting destruction of the Great War, the reader is left to wonder who the real children in this novel are. The Children’s Book is an astonishing novel. It is an historical feat that brings to life an era that helped shape our own as well as a gripping, personal novel about parents and children, life’s most painful struggles and its richest pleasures. No other writer could have imagined it or created it.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Railway Children The story concerns a family who move from London to "The Three Chimneys", a house near the railway in Yorkshire, after the father, who works at the Foreign Office, is imprisoned after being falsely accused of spying. The children befriend an Old Gentleman who regularly takes the 9:15 train near their home; he is eventually able to help prove their father's innocence, and the family is reunited. The family take care of a Russian exile, Mr Szczepansky, who came to England looking for his family (later located) and Jim, the grandson of the Old Gentleman, who suffers a broken leg in a tunnel. The theme of an innocent man being falsely imprisoned for espionage and finally vindicated might have been influenced by the Dreyfus Affair, which was a prominent worldwide news item a few years before the book was written. The Russian exile, persecuted by the Tsars for writing "a beautiful book about poor people and how to help them" and subsequently helped by the children, was most likely an amalgam of the real-life dissidents Sergius Stepniak and Peter Kropotkin who were both friends of the author. The whole journey throughout this book was magical. It is nostalgic. It is beautiful. This can be one of the best children's stories you have ever read in your life. Facts and Trivia About the Book: 1. The story has been adapted for the screen six times to date, including four television series, a feature film, and a made-for-television film. 2. It was adapted for radio by Marcy Kahan and produced by John Taylor. It stars Paul Copley, Timothy Bateson and Victoria Carling and was first heard in 1991. 3. The story has been adapted as a television series four times by the BBC. The first of these, in 1951, was in 8 episodes of 30 minutes each. A second adaptation was then produced, which re-used some of the film from the original series but also contained new material with slight cast changes. This had 4 episodes of 60 minutes each. The BBC again revisited the story with an 8-episode series in 1957 and a 7-episode series in 1968. The 1968 adaptation was placed 96th in the BFI's 100 Greatest British Television Programmes poll of 2000. It starred Jenny Agutter as Roberta and Gillian Bailey as Phyllis. Of all the TV adaptations, only the 1968 version is known to be extant (it is currently available on DVD); the rest may be lost. Scroll Up and Grab Your Copy! Bastable, and their attempts to assist their widowed father and recover the fortunes of their family; The story is told from a child's point of view. The narrator is Oswald, but on the first page he announces: "It is one of us that tells this story - but I shall not tell you which: only at the very end perhaps I will. While the story is going on you may be trying to guess, only I bet you don't." Their adventures were both touching and funny. The stories, previously printed in magazines (like Blackie's Children's Annual), are typical of Nesbit's arch, ironic, clever fantasies for children. The twelve stories in the collection are: "The Cat-hood of Maurice" - a boy abuses the family cat, and learns to see things from the feline point of view. "The Mixed Mine" - two boys find a magic spyglass, and use it to make their fortunes. "Accidental Magic" - Quentin falls asleep on the altarstone at Stonehenge, and wakes in Atlantis. "The Princess and the Hedge-pig" - King Ozymandias and Queen Eliza plan a secret christening for their Princess Ozyliza, to avoid a wicked fairy's curse. Things go awry. "Septimus Septimusson" - he is the seventh son of a seventh son, who can see fairies and hear the beasts speak; and he must seek his fortune. "The White Cat" - a boy finds a china ornament in the attic; it proves to be a magic talisman. "Belinda and Bellamant" - they are a princess and prince suffering curses; a talking bat helps resolve their problems. "Justnowland" - Elsie visits a magic land of giant crows, and a dragon. "The Related Muff" - a sensitive boy, dismissed as a "muff" by his cousins, proves himself a hero in a crisis. "The Aunt and Amabel" - a girl enters a magic world through a wardrobe. "Kenneth and the Carp" - unjustly accused, a boy transforms into a fish and redeems his honor. "The Magician's Heart" - an evil magician distributes curses at royal christenings. Complications ensue.
