This book was released on 2007 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lala Lajpat Rai was one of the outstanding leaders of modern India, a contemporary of Dadabhai Naroji, Tilak, Gokhale and Gandhi. His public life spanned the last decade of the nineteenth century and the first three decades of the twentieth century. He practiced law at the Lahore Chief Court and built up a lucrative practice, but was drawn very early into public activities pertaining to religious, educational and social reforms and then into nationalist politics. Lajpat Rai was one of the foremost leaders of the Indian National Congress. His arrest and deportation without trial to Burma in 1907 created a great sensation in India. He spent the war years (1914-18) in the United States propagating the Indian case for self- government. He returned to India in 1920 and had the honour of presiding over the Calcutta session of the Indian National Congress which approved of Gandhi's campaign for non-cooperation with the government. He was deputy leader of the Swaraj Party in the Legislative Assembly and played a prominent role in provincial as well as national politics in the 1920s. While leading a demonstration against the Simmon Commision at Lahore in 1928 he received injuries in an assault by the police which hastened his death. The ninth volume in the series opens in February 1920, when Lajpat Rai had just returned to India after spending nearly six years abroad, and covers the next ten months. A year earlier, while in America, he had been stirred by the news from India and expressed admiration for Gandhi's strict adherence to his principles. However, at the Calcutta Special Congress over which he presided, Lajpat Rai remained equivocal on Gandhi's resolution on non-cooperation with the government. He even publicly supported V.J. Patel's dissent to Gandhi's programme and cast doubts on the feasibility of his methods. But three months later at the Nagpur Congress, he, along with V.J. Patel and other leaders, decided to fall in line and strongly refuted the arguments of the opponents of Gandhi and called upon the country to carry out Gandhi's programme. Lajpat Rai started an Urdu paper, Bande Mataram, and established the Tilak School of Politics to impart education for political work and train experts in politics and economics. He also presided over the first session of the All India Trade Union Congress and emphasised the need for organising the workers, making them class conscious and educating them in the ways and interests of commonwealth. He continued to take interest in other fields of creative activities, such as education and foreign affairs, which had a bearing on the nationalist struggle.

Book Being Hindu Being Indian

Download or read book Being Hindu Being Indian written by Vanya Vaidehi Bhargav and published by Penguin Random House India Private Limited. This book was released on 2024-02-29 with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In popular imagination, Lala Lajpat Rai is frequently associated with Bhagat Singh, who, by assassinating J.P. Saunders, avenged Rai’s death, caused by a police lathi charge, and was hanged for it. Lajpat Rai is also remembered for his fervent opposition to British rule. In recent decades, however, historians have converged with the Hindu Right in rediscovering Lajpat Rai as an ideological ancestor of Hindutva. But what then explains Rai’s wholehearted approval of Congress–Muslim League cooperation, and attempt to endow Hindus and Muslims with bonds of common belonging? Why did he reinterpret India’s medieval history to highlight peaceful coexistence between Hindus and Muslims? Have our hasty conclusions about Lajpat Rai’s nationalist thought concealed its complexities and distorted our understanding of nationalism in general? Meticulously researched and eloquently written, Being Hindu, Being Indian offers the first comprehensive examination of Lajpat Rai’s nationalist thought. By revealing the complexities of Rai’s thinking, it provokes us to think more deeply about broader questions relevant to present-day politics: Are all expressions of ‘Hindu nationalism’ the same as Hindutva? What are the similarities and differences between ‘Hindu’ and ‘Indian’ nationalism? Can communalism and secularism be expressed together? How should we understand fluidity in politics? This book invites readers to treat Lajpat Rai’s ideas as a gateway to think more deeply about history, politics, religious identity and nationhood.

Book Madan Mohan Malaviya and the Indian Freedom Movement

Download or read book Madan Mohan Malaviya and the Indian Freedom Movement written by Jagannath Prasad Misra and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016-02-18 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the time when the national movement was still in its early stages, Madan Mohan Malaviya emerged as an enigmatic but commanding figure in the political landscape of India. This work reconstructs Malaviya’s ideal of nationalism, which was composite, constructive and creative and offers a fresh perspective on an important period of modern India’s political history. Utilizing new and authentic source material, this book traces Malaviya’s role in the freedom struggle, the people who supported him, his relations with other established political leaders of the country within and outside of the Congress party and how he saw his own actions and role in public life. Taking Malaviya as a particular example of subcontinental leadership, Jagannath Prasad Misra studies the method and manner of Malaviya’s nationalist propaganda. He shows that rather than being a restraining influence, Malaviya’s faith in constitutional politics and educational advancement laid a solid foundation for the uplift of the nation.

Book Hindu Nationalism in India

Download or read book Hindu Nationalism in India written by Bidyut Chakrabarty and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-11-27 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers an in-depth study of right-wing politics in India by analysing the shifting ideologies of Hindu nationalism and its evolution in the late nineteenth century through to twenty-first century. The authors provide a thorough overview of the chronological evolution of Hindu nationalist organizational outfits to reveal how Hindu nationalist ideology has adapted in ways that have not always corresponded with the orthodox Hindu nationalist position. An examination of the overriding preference for Hindu nationalism demonstrates how it has flourished and continues to remain relevant in contemporary India despite being marginalized at the dawn of India’s independence. The book demonstrates that Hindu nationalism is a context-driven ideological device which is sensitive to the ideas and priorities that gradually gain salience. It also explores Hindu nationalism as a vote-catching device, especially from the late twentieth century onwards. Providing a nuanced analysis of Hindu nationalism in India as a constantly evolving phenomenon, this book will be of interest to researchers on Asian political theory, nationalism, religious politics and South Asian and Indian politics.
