Book excerpt: The Collected Works of Irving Langmuir, Volume 1: Low-Pressure Phenomena is a 16-chapter text that covers the early work of Irving Langmuir, beginning with his doctoral thesis written in 1906, focusing on the chemical and physical aspects of low-pressure phenomena. The first chapters deal with the dissociation of various gases produced by hot platinum wires and the convection and conduction of gases at high temperatures. The subsequent chapters consider the velocity of reactions in gases, the chemically active modification of hydrogen, and the dissociation of hydrogen into atoms. Considerable chapters are devoted to chemical reactions at very low pressures. The final chapters discuss the radiation as an important factor in chemical action and the mechanism of the catalytic action of platinum in the reactions between hydrogen and oxygen. This book is of value to physical chemists and physical chemistry researchers.

Download or read book Thermionic Phenomena written by C. Guy Suits and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 516 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thermionic Phenomena is the third volume of the series entitled The Collected Works of Irving Langmuir. This volume compiles articles written during the 1920's and early 1930's, the period when the science of thermionics is beginning to be of importance. This text is divided into two parts. The first part discusses vacuum pumps, specifically examining the effect of space charge and residual gases on thermionic currents in high vacuum. This part also explains fundamental phenomena in electron tubes having tungsten cathodes and the use of high-power vacuum tubes. The second part of this text looks into the electron emission and adsorbed films, specifically studying the relation between contact potentials and electrochemical action and other related topics on electron emission. This publication will be invaluable to those interested in the works of Langmuir, particularly on thermionic phenomena.

Download or read book Atmospheric Phenomena written by C. Guy Suits and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Atmospheric Phenomenon is composed of different essays written or co-authored by Irving Langmuir. The essays explore the different parts that form the atmosphere. A section of the book describes the evaporation of small spheres. Another section is about the radial flow in rotating liquids. The book also covers the light signals in aviation and navigation. An essay that describes the airplane tracks in the surface of stratus clouds is then provided. Some of the essays contained in a section in the book focus on the process of cloud seeding. This section explores such topics as smoke filters, cloud droplets, and water droplet trajectories. Another section in the book is especially devoted to the methods of cloud seeding using dry ice, silver iodide, and sodium chloride. The book can be a useful tool for aviation scientists, engineers in the field of aerial navigation, and individuals whose field of study is mainly on weather manipulation and control.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Collected Works of Irving Langmuir: Volume 12, Langmuir, the Man and the Scientist presents the biography of Irving Langmuir, General Electric's foremost research scientist, which also includes a chronological summary of his contributions to science. Irving Langmuir, born on January 31, 1881 in New York, attends Public School No. 11 when he is seven. When he reaches 15, he attends Chestnut Hill Academy in Philadelphia. His eye troubles become worse making him wear glasses; later in life, he has cataracts removed from both eyes. He graduates with a Bachelor of Science degree in metallurgical engineering from Columbia University in 1903. In 1906, Langmuir earns his Ph.D., degree from Gottingen. He accepts an instructor position in Chemistry at Stevens Institute of Technology, New Jersey, until 1909 when joins the General Electric Company. In the next years, he receives numerous awards such as the Nichols Medal, Cannizaro Prize, Willar Gibbs Medal. In 1912, he marries Marion Mersereau. He receives the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1932. Among his contributions to science are an improved tungsten filament design used in incandescent bulbs, an atomic hydrogen welding torch, and theories of atomic structure and chemical bond formations. He dies of a heart attack in 1957 at the age of 76. Students, and academicians involved in history, general readers, and scientists interested in the lives of great men in science will find this book pleasant reading.
Download or read book The Quintessence of Irving Langmuir written by Albert Rosenfeld and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2017-03-20 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Quintessence of Irving Langmuir is a biography on the life of Irving Langmuir. The book was created to complement the volume entitled "The Collected Works of Irving Langmuir. This selection was created to introduce the person and his works. Special attention has been given to Langmuir's early life and family background. The text begins with an account of the person's child seen from the mother's perspective. Such an account was taken from the family's documents. These documents are in the form of letters, diaries, photograph albums, newspaper clippings, and genealogical studies. A brief history about the formation of General Electric Company is also covered. A great part of the book relates the life of Langmuir as a father and as a scientist. Among his inventions is using dry ice for cloud seeding. One of his greatest achievements is receiving a Nobel Prize in Chemistry. The book is directed to the general public.
