Download or read book Anglo American Travelers and the Hotel Experience in Nineteenth Century Literature written by Monika Elbert and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-08-24 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume examines the hotel experience of Anglo-American travelers in the nineteenth century from the viewpoint of literary and cultural studies as well as spatiality theory. Focusing on the social and imaginary space of the hotel in fiction, periodicals, diaries, and travel accounts, the essays shed new light on nineteenth-century notions of travel writing. Analyzing the liminal space of the hotel affords a new way of understanding the freedoms and restrictions felt by travelers from different social classes and nations. As an environment that forced travelers to reimagine themselves or their cultural backgrounds, the hotel could provide exhilarating moments of self-discovery or dangerous feelings of alienation. It could prove liberating to the tourist seeking an escape from prescribed gender roles or social class constructs. The book addresses changing notions of nationality, social class, and gender in a variety of expansive or oppressive hotel milieu: in the private space of the hotel room and in the public spaces (foyers, parlors, dining areas). Sections address topics including nationalism and imperialism; the mundane vs. the supernatural; comfort and capitalist excess; assignations, trysts, and memorable encounters in hotels; and women’s travels. The book also offers a brief history of inns and hotels of the time period, emphasizing how hotels play a large role in literary texts, where they frequently reflect order and disorder in a personal and/or national context. This collection will appeal to scholars in literature, travel writing, history, cultural studies, and transnational studies, and to those with interest in travel and tourism, hospitality, and domesticity.

Book excerpt: Some of the most innovative chapters involve the relationship of historical understanding on the present, as exemplified in the minds of Unionist politicians searching for a new identity or in the minds of the creators of the wall murals in nationalist and unionist areas of Belfast. These themes are brought together in an introduction which looks at the strands of commonality and difference in the histories of Ireland and Scotland.

Download or read book Victorian Bloomsbury written by Rosemary Ashton and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2012-09-14 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While Bloomsbury is now associated with Virginia Woolf and her early-twentieth-century circle of writers and artists, the neighborhood was originally the undisputed intellectual quarter of nineteenth-century London. Drawing on a wealth of untapped archival resources, Rosemary Ashton brings to life the educational, medical, and social reformists who lived and worked in Victorian Bloomsbury and who led crusades for education, emancipation, and health for all. Ashton explores the secular impetus behind these reforms and the humanitarian and egalitarian character of nineteenth-century Bloomsbury. Thackeray and Dickens jostle with less famous characters like Henry Brougham and Mary Ward. Embracing the high life of the squares, the nonconformity of churches, the parades of shops, schools, hospitals and poor homes, this is a major contribution to the history of nineteenth-century London.
Download or read book Water is Best written by Alastair J. Durie and published by John Donald Publishers. This book was released on 2006 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In the mid-nineteenth century a new system of water treatment, called hydropathy, arrived in Britain, and nowhere did it take stronger root than in Scotland, where the setting in attractive locations provided an ideal environment for relaxing and revitalising. The appeal of the curative regime, which involved baths, showers and massage, was enhanced in the Scottish hydros by a firm emphasis on temperance, diet, fresh air and exercise. This made the hydros, with their remarkable architecture, favoured places for respectable holidays, and they were loyal supported by the middle classes." "This study examines the enthusiasts and practitioners who ran the hydros, the personnel and patients, the visitors and guests, and looks at why the Scottish hydros became so successful whereas the Scottish spas faded. The book will appeal to those interested in medical history, tourism and social history."--Jacket.
