Book Lord Methuen and the British Army

Download or read book Lord Methuen and the British Army written by Stephen M. Miller and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-11-12 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study analyzes the readiness of the British military establishment for war in 1899 and its performance in the South African War (1899-1902). It focuses on the career of Field Marshal Paul Sanford, 3rd Baron Methuen, whose traditional military training, used so effectively in Queen Victoria's small wars, was put to the test by the modern challenges of the South African War. A subsidiary aim of this work is to correct and refine the historical consensus that Methuen's campaing in the South African War was plagued by practical errors and poor judgement. The South African War was a crucial transitional episode in the history of the British army. Unlike Great Britain's other expeditions, it required the concentrated resources of the entire empire. It was a modern war in the sense that it employed the technology, the weaponry, the communications, and the transportation of the second industrial revolution.

Book British Military Operations in Egypt and the Sudan

Download or read book British Military Operations in Egypt and the Sudan written by Harold E. Raugh and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2008-05-02 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The British Army's campaigns in Egypt and the Sudan from 1882 to 1899 were among the most dramatic and hard-fought in British military history. In 1882, the British sent an expeditionary force to Egypt to quell the Arabic Revolt and secure British control of the Suez Canal, its lifeline to India. The enigmatic British Major General Charles G. Gordon was sent to the Sudan in 1884 to study the possibility of evacuating Egyptian garrisons threatened by Muslim fanatics, the dervishes, in the Sudan. While the dervishes defeated the British forces on a number of occasions, the British eventually learned to combat the insurrection and ultimately, largely through superior technology and firepower, vanquished the insurgents in 1898. British Operations in Egypt and the Sudan: A Selected Bibliography enumerates and generally describes and annotates hundreds of contemporary, current, and hard-to-find books, journal articles, government documents, and personal papers on all aspects of British military operations in Egypt and the Sudan from 1882 to 1899. Arranged chronologically and topically, chapters cover the various campaigns, focusing on specific battles, leading military personalities, and the contributions of imperial nations as well as supporting services of the British Army. This definitive volume is an indispensable reference for researching imperialism, colonial history, and British military operations, leadership, and tactics.

Book Amidst Cheers They Marched to War

Download or read book Amidst Cheers They Marched to War written by Hannah Spencer and published by Troubador Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2018-06-12 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Warfare has redefined our world over the past century. Even the smallest communities have cheered their men as they marched away, and laid wreaths for those who didn’t return. The villages which formed the Alscot Estate in Warwickshire are no different. Their men lie in graves in France, India, Iraq, Burma, South Africa and many other places besides. Some are remembered in perpetuity. Others are not. None of those touched by war returned home the same. Physically and emotionally, their lives were changed forever, for better or for worse. The cost to them, their families and their communities was great. The Second World War in particular redefined life for those on the home front. As conflict brings out the worst in people, it also brings out the best. This book tells stories of incredible feats of bravery. Humour amidst intolerable hardships. Dedication, sacrifice, camaraderie lasting decades. Men, women and children striving to do their best for their country. People simply getting on with things, because they had to be done. This is their tribute.

Download or read book The Boer War written by Fred R. van Hartesveldt and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2000-05-30 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One hundred years after the Boer War, the British continue to debate what went wrong, while the war has significant nationalist overtones in today's South Africa. This book examines changes in interpretations of the war and provides a bibliography of major sources on the Boer War, now sometimes called the South African War. The bibliography focuses on the military history, but also includes some historical accounts of the political debate. The first part of the book provides an extended historiographical essay, while part two provides an annotated bibliography of the titles discussed in part one. Historiographical questions concerning the Boer War are numerous. Discussions of military operations focus on the early use of modern weaponry and the effect of guerrilla tactics on a traditional force, while other historians debate the question of British military leadership and organization. Questions also revolve around British imperialism and the scramble for Africa. Frequently called the second war for freedom by South African authors, the war was the reason that South Africa, unlike other British colonies, gained independence without majority rule. This makes the war of continuing relevance to the turmoil in South Africa, the collapse of the minority government, and the continuing problems of the current government. This book will provide a useful tool for those wishing to research the war.

Book The Battle of Magersfontein

Download or read book The Battle of Magersfontein written by Garth Benneyworth and published by Helion and Company. This book was released on 2023-06-30 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Magersfontein is an iconic battle, fought during the South African War of 1899–1902, also known as the Second Anglo-Boer War. Over 30 years of research informs this book, the first source referenced history about Magersfontein and the other actions, fought in the lead up to this monumental clash. It details the Kimberly Siege and the intensity of combat fought at Belmont, Graspan, and, in particular Modder River, a key battle during the opening months of the war. No shortage of publications exists on the South African War and Magersfontein. Yet myths perpetuate, legends, ideologies, hand down errors, fabrications, and sloppy research by self-appointed experts. Many contemporary sources regurgitate without analysis, and many recent publications offer no references to sources. None consult the rich and extensive archives in the Kimberley and Bloemfontein museums, instead using stock standard sources, while ignoring Dutch and Afrikaans language accounts, resulting in lopsided narratives. To address this, the author has used primary sources, never before published diaries, letters, photographs, maps, battle orders, official histories and reports, personal reflections, regimental histories of the war, and survivor interviews, collected over 30 years. The originals being lodged in archives, libraries, museums and private collections in the United Kingdom, South Africa, and Australia. Having walked the killing grounds for over three decades, the author offers insights into the archaeology and topography of the site, also detailing forgotten burial sites of human casualties, from all sides. Consequently, original findings emerge, with regards to Boer positioning and tactics, a British outflanking manoeuvre at Magersfontein Hill that almost worked, and Boer counter attacks, and the use of mobility, rather than the previously expounded notion that they sat passively parked in trenches, as most narratives present. Insights into military commanders emerge, never before published. Importantly, the war between the Generals, which this work uncovers, relying on unpublished recollections of conversations between senior officers from both sides. The loathing between two prominent Boer generals, as too the incompetence of the leading British General, glossed over for 122 years. Captured in this infighting, were loyal, efficient, and brave British and Boer commanders and ordinary soldiers from both sides. Many of whose voices speak through this narrative for the first time, doing justice and testimony to their unique, yet terrifying experiences and observations of warfare, in Victory and Defeat on the South African Veld.
