This book was released on 2015-06-13 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Code of the Spirit, an Interpretation of the Decalogue The laws of spiritual living are, traditionally, the Ten Commandments. Those almost prehistoric words have flourished long not so much because of an obvious as because of a hidden meaning. That they purport and always have purported to be the laws of the souls health is, also, a reason for their survival. And the fact of their survival shows how practical is men's perception that the life of their spirit, like the life of any thing, can thrive only under the sway of certain ascertainable laws. To-day the word Commandment, when used in the biological sense in which religion speaks, is less intelligible than the word law. The traditional word suggests a picture with which we have small sympathy. The quieter, nonvocal, the laboratory revelation suits us better than the dramatic, military one. It is, of course, a matter of mental habit. A hundred years more and we may prefer to think of all laws as commands. A little more militarism; a little more influence of such things as wireless telegraphy where secondary causes are much concealed, - might change our mental habit. But to-day our habit is to emphasize the inherence of law. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Spirit in the New Testament Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Spirit in the New Testament Classic Reprint written by Ernest Findlay Scott and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-10-12 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Spirit in the New Testament NO doctrine has proved so fruitful in modern Christianity as that of the Spirit. During the last century, and more especially in our own generation, the social order has undergone profound changes; our knowledge of nature and of the process of human development has been immensely widened; the documents of the faith have been subjected to critical inquiry, with the result that many of the old assumptions have given way. If our religion has been able to maintain itself under the altered conditions this has been chiefly due to the doctrine of the Spirit which it has inherited from the early church. The disciples believed that along with his message Jesus had imparted the revealing and life-giving Spirit. His Gospel was not bound to a fixed tradition but was capable of endless growth and self-renewal. It could take into itself new elements, and keep pace with the world's movement, and appeal with a fresh meaning to every age. This great conception was long obscured under the various authoritative creeds, but is now finding its rightful place. Teachers of every school are guided by it more and more in their interpretation of the Christian message. Book The Revelation of the Holy Spirit Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Revelation of the Holy Spirit Classic Reprint written by J. E. C. Welldon and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-23 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Revelation of the Holy Spirit Goethe says wisely that the battle of faith and infidelity is the one momentous issue in human history; all other issues are subordinate to this. But faith in one point of religion facilitates faith in all religion. Truth is a whole, and every part of it is indissolubly linked to other parts. It is possible, then, that a plea for the doctrine of the Holy Spirit may possess some slight value in Christian Apolo getics. If it were so in the instance of this book, that would be my deepest joy, my best reward. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2016-10-16 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teaching of Jesus Concerning the Holy Spirit God from his own spirit, thus reasoning from the less to the greater? Or did he argue from the name spirit which in both Hebrew and Greek languages means also wind, that God was therefore like the wind unsearchable in origin and immaterial in essence These are interesting questions to the student of the origin of religion but they are not the immediate concern of Biblical Theology. Did men at first generally ascribe all that was unusual and surprising in their ex perience to the Spirit of God? Perhaps so, where they were without definite knowledge of Him. But the Old Testa ment describes how God chose out of the world certain individuals and after ward a people to whom to make Him self known and we cannot therefore attribute to them such ignorant and su perstitious conceptions. Book Religion in Sociological Perspective

Download or read book Religion in Sociological Perspective written by Keith A. Roberts and published by SAGE Publications. This book was released on 2011-06-09 with total page 473 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Religion in Sociological Perspective is an introduction to the sociology of religion core text, designed to present and illustrate the basic theories sociologists use to understand the social dimensions of religion. First and foremost, the authors seek to help students understand the perspective from which sociologists view religion. By the time students have finished this book, they should understand the central theories and methods of research in the sociology of religion, and they should have an idea of how to apply these analytical tools to new groups they encounter. The goal of this text is to be illustrative rather than all-encompassing. The Fifth Edition continues to draw on a wide range of perspectives. The text aims to help students recognize the contributions of various theoretical perspectives and the blind spots of each theory. Conflict, functional, social constructionist, and rational choice paradigms are used throughout the text. Various middle-range theories are also utilized to explore specific processes. Despite the effort to introduce many perspectives, however, we have made an effort to enhance integration of the text by using one framework throughout the book: the open systems model.

Book The Beginning of Wisdom

Download or read book The Beginning of Wisdom written by Leon Kass and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2003-05-20 with total page 722 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Imagine that you could really understand the Bible...that you could read, analyze, and discuss the book of Genesis not as a compositional mystery, a cultural relic, or a linguistic puzzle palace, or even as religious doctrine, but as a philosophical classic, precisely in the same way that a truth-seeking reader would study Plato or Nietzsche. Imagine that you could be led in your study by one of America's preeminent intellectuals and that he would help you to an understanding of the book that is deeper than you'd ever dreamed possible, that he would reveal line by line, verse by verse the incredible riches of this illuminating text -- one of the very few that actually deserve to be called seminal. Imagine that you could get, from Genesis, the beginning of wisdom. The Beginning of Wisdom is a hugely learned book that, like Genesis itself, falls naturally into two sections. The first shows how the universal history described in the first eleven chapters of Genesis, from creation to the tower of Babel, conveys, in the words of Leon Kass, "a coherent anthropology" -- a general teaching about human nature -- that "rivals anything produced by the great philosophers." Serving also as a mirror for the reader's self-discovery, these stories offer profound insights into the problematic character of human reason, speech, freedom, sexual desire, the love of the beautiful, pride, shame, anger, guilt, and death. Something as seemingly innocuous as the monotonous recounting of the ten generations from Adam to Noah yields a powerful lesson in the way in which humanity encounters its own mortality. In the story of the tower of Babel are deep understandings of the ambiguous power of speech, reason, and the arts; the hazards of unity and aloneness; the meaning of the city and its quest for self-sufficiency; and man's desire for fame, immortality, and apotheosis -- and the disasters these necessarily cause. Against this background of human failure, Part Two of The Beginning of Wisdom explores the struggles to launch a new human way, informed by the special Abrahamic covenant with the divine, that might address the problems and avoid the disasters of humankind's natural propensities. Close, eloquent, and brilliant readings of the lives and educations of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and Jacob's sons reveal eternal wisdom about marriage, parenting, brotherhood, education, justice, political and moral leadership, and of course the ultimate question: How to live a good life? Connecting the two "parts" is the book's overarching philosophical and pedagogical structure: how understanding the dangers and accepting the limits of human powers can open the door to a superior way of life, not only for a solitary man of virtue but for an entire community -- a life devoted to righteousness and holiness. This extraordinary book finally shows Genesis as a coherent whole, beginning with the creation of the natural world and ending with the creation of a nation that hearkens to the awe-inspiring summons to godliness. A unique and ambitious commentary, a remarkably readable literary exegesis and philosophical companion, The Beginning of Wisdom is one of the most important books in decades on perhaps the most important -- and surely the most frequently read -- book of all time.
