Book excerpt: Light in the Shoe Shop offers readers a unique and intimate glance into the day-to-day experience of living the cloistered life in feminine mode. In her “cobbler’s contemplations”—no metaphor here: the author did indeed make and mend her sisters’ shoes for many years—Mother Agnes reveals the very simple secret of monastic life, a secret she shows to be an inseparable combination of mindfulness and fidelity. It is continual mindfulness of God’s transformative presence and action and, in response, equally continual fidelity to each of the minutely detailed ways in which that loving divine presence woos the contemplative’s heart. Even those who strive for a more contemplative life outside of literal cloisters will find her reflections to be a great gift and inspiration. “This book is decidedly not just one more item in the picturesque genre of the ‘nun’s story.’ Rather, for all its slenderness, the volume bears a strong witness to the fact that a human life that stakes its all on loving will gradually become transfused with light.” From the foreword by Simeon Leiva, OCSO

Book Paperwork

    Book Details:
  • Author : Kevin McLaughlin
  • Publisher : University of Pennsylvania Press
  • Release : 2011-06-03
  • ISBN : 0812202775
  • Pages : 194 pages

Download or read book Paperwork written by Kevin McLaughlin and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2011-06-03 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Paper Age" is the phrase coined by Thomas Carlyle in 1837 to describe the monetary and literary inflation of the French Revolution—an age of mass-produced "Bank-paper" and "Book-paper." Carlyle's phrase is suggestive because it points to the particular substance—paper—that provides the basis for reflection on the mass media in much popular fiction appearing around the time of his historical essay. Rather than becoming a metaphor, however, paper in some of this fiction seems to display the more complex and elusive character of what Walter Benjamin evocatively calls "the decline of the aura." The critical perspective elaborated by Benjamin serves as the point of departure for the readings of paper proposed in Paperwork. Kevin McLaughlin argues for a literary-critical approach to the impact of the mass media on literature through a series of detailed interpretations of paper in fiction by Poe, Stevenson, Melville, Dickens, and Hardy. In this fiction, he argues, paper dramatizes the "withdrawal," as Benjamin puts it, of the "here and now" of the traditional work of art into the dispersing or distracting movement of the mass media. Paperwork seeks to challenge traditional concepts of medium and message that continue to inform studies of print culture and the mass media especially in the wake of industrialized production in the early nineteenth century. It breaks new ground in the exploration of the difference between mass culture and literature and will appeal to cultural historians and literary critics alike.

Book excerpt: Eveline, a Bohemian peasant girl, had already suffered great loss in her short life. When their underground church of believers is discovered, she is forced to flee with her family and new husband. If she had known then that she would soon lose all and be left alone on the streets of Vienna with only her unborn baby, it may have been more than she could have borne. Thankfully, God does not allow his children to be tested beyond their endurance. He will bless and use her in ways she could never have foreseen. Through hostile new in-laws, prickly co-workers, religious war, and a wayward child, she continues to overcome. Framed in the first quarter of the 15th century, Eveline's story is entwined with many historical figures such as John Hus, the great Bohemian Preacher, Zizka, the one eyed Bohemian general, Master Grocer Kritz, and bad King Wenceslaus. Eveline's family were willing to be numbered as heretics, just like the Apostle Paul, who said, "But this I confess unto you, that after The Way which they call heresy, so worship I the God of my fathers, believing all things which are written in the law and in the prophets." Acts 24:14 The Old Heretic and his wife have sought to present the heretic's story and restore the honor they are denied by the slanders made against them. This book is a late chapter, in the story of the CHAIN OF WITNESSES. Continue to follow the family into St. Gallen, Switzerland in book 2, THE INQUISITOR. When completed, Book 3, THE GREEK PRINTING PRESS will find the family in Nidda, Germany.
