Book excerpt: All Callum wants is a break from the spirits who hound him for closure, especially a demon called The Shadow who's incessant presence has forced him to guard the veil separating the living and spirit worlds for weeks. All Zander needs is a fresh start in a new city after years of family drama and tragedy. When they find each other, they find everything they want and need—but Callum's supernatural reprieve has a price. And Zander's fresh start might be a death sentence. Soon, Callum realizes he didn't escape The Shadow when he met Zander, just enticed it to find a new victim: Zander's little sister. To save her sister, and prevent The Shadow from gaining access to the living world, Callum is forced to tell Zander the truth he'd hoped to ignore: he's a medium, able to see and speak to spirits—and she's a cloak, a rare individual who unknowingly closes the veil between the living and spirit worlds. It's no wonder Zander doesn't believe in ghosts—when she's around, it's like they don't exist. So how can Callum make her see the invisible spirit world that lives alongside the one she knows? And, more importantly, how can he make her understand she is the only thing preventing the evil stalking her sister from gaining unhindered access to the living world—the only thing standing between Callum and an endless, living hell?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A lively exploration of how invisibility has gone from science fiction to fact Is it possible for something or someone to be made invisible? This question, which has intrigued authors of science fiction for over a century, has become a headline-grabbing topic of scientific research. In this book, science writer and optical physicist Gregory J. Gbur traces the science of invisibility from its sci-fi origins in the nineteenth-century writings of authors such as H. G. Wells and Fitz James O'Brien to modern stealth technology, invisibility cloaks, and metamaterials. He explores the history of invisibility and its science and technology connections, including the discovery of the electromagnetic spectrum, the development of the atomic model, and quantum theory. He shows how invisibility has moved from fiction to reality, and he questions the hidden paths that lie ahead for researchers. This is not only the story of invisibility but also the story of humankind's understanding of the nature of light itself, and of the many fascinating figures whose discoveries advanced this knowledge.

Book Michael Baxandall Vision and the Work of Words

Download or read book Michael Baxandall Vision and the Work of Words written by Robert Williams and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'The most important art historian of his generation? is how some scholars have described the late Michael Baxandall (1933-2007), Professor of the Classical Tradition at the Warburg Institute, University of London, and of the History of Art at the University of California, Berkeley. Baxandall?s work had a transformative effect on the study of European Renaissance and eighteenth-century art, and contributed to a complex transition in the aims and methods of art history in general during the 1970s, ?80s and ?90s. While influential, he was also an especially subtle and independent thinker - occasionally a controversial one - and many of the implications of his work have yet to be fully understood and assimilated. This collection of 10 essays endeavors to assess the nature of Baxandall?s achievement, and in particular to address the issue of the challenges it offers to the practice of art history today. This volume provides the most comprehensive assessment of Baxandall?s work to date, while drawing upon the archive of Baxandall papers recently deposited at the Cambridge University Library and the Warburg Institute.

Download or read book A Corpus of Rembrandt Paintings written by J. Bruyn and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-05-14 with total page 890 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the second half of the last century art historians, realizing that the image of Rembrandt’s work had become blurred with time, have attempted to redefine the artist’s significance both as a source of inspiration to other artists and as a great artist in his own right. In order to carry on the work started by previous generations, a group of leading Dutch art historians from the university and museum world joined forces in the late 1960s in order to study afresh the paintings usually ascribed to the artist. The researchers came together in the Rembrandt Research Project which was established to provide the art world with a new standard reference work which would serve the community of art historians for the nearby and long future. They examined the originals of all works attributed to Rembrandt taking full advantage of today’s sophisticated techniques including radiography, neutron activation autoradiography, dendrochronology and paint sample analysis — thereby gaining valuable insight into the genesis and condition of the paintings. The result of this meticulous research is laid down chronologically in the following Volumes: A Corpus of Rembrandt Paintings, Volume I, which deals with works from Rembrandt’s early years in Leiden(1629-1631), published in 1982. THIS VOLUME: A Corpus of Rembrandt Paintings, Volume II, covering his first years in Amsterdam (1631-1634), published in 1986. A Corpus of Rembrandt Paintings, Volume III, goes into his later years of reputation (1635-1642), published in 1990. Each Volume consists of a number of Introductory Chapters as well as the full Catalogue of all paintings from the given time period attributed to Rembrandt. In this catalogue each painting is discussed and examined in a detailed way, comprising a descriptive, an interpretative and a documentary section. For the authenticity evaluation of the paintings three different categories are used to divide the works in: A. Paintings by Rembrandt, B. Paintings of which Rembrandt’s authorship cannot be positively either accepted or rejected, and C. Paintings of which Rembrandt’s authorship cannot be accepted. This volume (Volume II) contains 900 pages, starting of with five introductory chapters and discussing 101 paintings. In clear and accessible explanatory text all different paintings are discussed, larded with immaculate images of each painting. Details are shown where possible, as well as the results of modern day technical imaging.
