Book Promoters and Politicians

Download or read book Promoters and Politicians written by Brian J Young and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 1979-12-15 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of the north-shore railways provides a case study in the complexities of industrial development in nineteenth-century Quebec. Constructed in the fifteen years following Confederation, the North Shore and the Montreal Colonization Railways reinforced Quebec's integration into a transcontinental unit. Yet bankruptcy of both companies in 1875 forced the provincial government to assume ownership of the railways and to shoulder a financial burden that kept the province preoccupied, weak, and subservient to Ottawa. Diverse political, clerical, and business interests united to construct the railways and to manoeuvre them from private companies into a public venture and ultimately into the Canadian Pacific system. The two railways brought new concentrations of capital and power that cut across French and English ethnic lines and sharpened regional rivalries. Along the south short of the St. Lawrence both French- and English-speaking inhabitants protested against the province's commitments to its north-shore railways. By the late 1870s Quebec City's English community was lobbying hard against the growing power of their English-speaking counterparts in Montreal. The north-shore railways plagued a generation of Quebec politicians, and their construction bared incompatible regional aspirations. By 1885 years of negotiation, scandal, and political blackmail culminated in the incorporation of the two north-shore railways into the Canadian Pacific system. As this study so clearly demonstrates, Quebec paid a high price in making its contribution to linking Canada by steel a mari usque ad mare.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through war, depression, and social upheaval, the first half of the twentieth century was a period of unprecedented turbulence in Canada. In this lively and contentious survey, Robert Bothwell, lan Drummond, and John English explore the political and economic forces that shaped this era of change. As in their earlier work, the highly acclaimed Canada since 1945, the authors focus on the political context of events. Beginning at the turn of the century, they consider the status of Canada in the empire and the world, the burgeoning growth of its economy, and the development of social and labour problems, up to the eruption of 1914. They discuss the political currents running through Canada during two wars, the interwar economic boom and depression, and the plans for post-war reconstruction, and assess the impact of these and other events on Canada's political, economic, social, and cultural institutions. Download or read book Le gouvernement des ressources naturelles science et territorialit s de l tat qu b cois 1867 1939 written by Stéphane Castonguay and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2021-04-15 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Government of Natural Resources explores government scientific activity in Quebec from Confederation until the Second World War. Scientific and technical personnel are an often quiet presence within the state, but they play an integral role. By tracing the history of geology, forestry, fishery, and agronomy services, Stéphane Castonguay reveals how the exploitation of natural resources became a tool of government. As it shaped territorial and environmental transformations, scientific activity contributed to state formation and expanded administrative capacity. This thoughtful reconceptualization of resource development reaches well beyond provincial borders, changing the way we think of science and state power.

Book From Drawing to Visual Culture

Download or read book From Drawing to Visual Culture written by Harold Pearse and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2006-12-14 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Drawing to Visual Culture takes a sweeping view of the role of visual art in Canadian education, from its roots as industrial drawing in the early nineteenth century to its important but often ambiguous position in contemporary schools. Art education and cultural history scholars consider practices in public schools, post-secondary schools, and non-school settings. The essays, many illustrated, range from focused surveys of particular eras or regions, to theoretically based analyses of movements or trends, to case studies that examine art education theory and practice in specific times and places. Contributors show that the nature and character of art education in Canada reflects the influence of ideas and practices in art and education and their interaction with various aspects of culture, language, religion, government, and geography. Contributors include F. Graeme Chalmers (British Columbia), Roger Clark (Western Ontario), Robert Dalton (Victoria), Suzanne Lemerise (Quebec à Montreal), E. Lisa Panayotidis (Calgary), Leah Sherman (Concordia), J. Craig Stirling (independent scholar and researcher, Montreal), Wendy Stephenson (PhD candidate, British Columbia), William Zuk (Manitoba).
