Download or read book Class Act written by Anne-Marie Mooney Cotter and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-05-23 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Even today, class discrimination remains an important global legal issue. This book allows readers a better understanding of the issue of class discrimination and inequality, including the role of education in bridging the class systems. The study seeks to increase the likelihood of achieving equality at both the national and international levels for those suffering class discrimination as the international population becomes increasingly educated, looking at the primary role of legislation, which has an impact on the court process. It also discusses the two most important trade agreements of our day - namely the North American Free Trade Agreement and the European Union Treaty - in a historical and compelling analysis of discrimination. By providing a detailed examination of the relationship between class and education as they relate to the law, the book will be an important read for those concerned with equality.
Download or read book Class Act written by Cholly Atkins and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2003-04-09 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cholly Atkins's career has spanned an extraordinary era of American dance. He began performing during Prohibition and continued his apprenticeship in vaudeville, in nightclubs, and in the army during World War II. With his partner, Honi Coles, Cholly toured the country, performing with such jazz masters as Louis Armstrong, Cab Calloway, and Count Basie. As tap reached a nadir in the fifties, Cholly created the new specialization of "vocal choreography," teaching rhythm-and-blues singers how to perform their music by adding rhythmical dance steps drawn from twentieth-century American dance, from the Charleston to rhythm tap. For the burgeoning Motown record label, Cholly taught such artists as the Supremes, Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, the Temptations, Gladys Knight and the Pips, and Marvin Gaye to command the stage in ways that would enhance their performances and "sell" their songs. Class Act tells of Cholly's boyhood and coming of age, his entry into the dance world of New York City, his performing triumphs and personal tragedies, and the career transformations that won him gold records and a Tony for choreographing Black and Blue on Broadway. Chronicling the rise, near demise, and rediscovery of tap dancing, the book is both an engaging biography and a rich cultural history.

Download or read book Go Slow written by Michael Owen and published by Chicago Review Press. This book was released on 2017-07-01 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has been said that the records of singer and actress Julie London were purchased for their provocative, full-color cover photographs as frequently as they were for the music contained in their grooves. During the 1950s and 1960s, her piercing blue eyes, strawberry-blonde hair, and shapely figure were used to sell the world an image of cool sexuality that stoked the fevered dreams of many men. The contrast between that image and reality, the public and the private, is at the heart of Julie London's story. Through years of research, extensive interviews with family, friends, and musical associates, and access to rarely seen or heard archival material, author Michael Owen reveals the impact that her image had on the direction of her career and how it influenced the choices she made, including the decision to walk away from performing. Go Slow follows Julie London's life and career through its many stages: her transformation from 1940s movie starlet to the coolly defiant singer of the classic torch ballad "Cry Me a River" of the 1950s, and her journey from Las Vegas hotel entertainer during the rock and roll revolution of the 1960s to the no-nonsense nurse of the 1970s hit television series Emergency!

This book was released on 2021-02-11 with total page 43 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about Gale Sayers. He was known as the "Kansas Comet" and was perhaps the most dynamic and exciting runner and player to ever play in the NFL. His career spanned from 1965-1969. In 1968, he suffered a career-ending knee injury. Gale played one more year in 1969 and led the NFL in rushing with 1,032 yards. In 1970 and 1971, he suffered more knee injuries and only played in 4 games and retired in the summer of 1972. I have covered his career and mentioned his longest touchdowns. His credentials are impressive. In 1965, he scored an NFL-tying 6 touchdowns in a game against the 49ers. Gale is considered the NFL's best ever kickoff returner with a record 30.6 average yards per return. For 42 years, he also shared the NFL-record with 6 kickoff return touchdowns in a career. He was selected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame 1977. Gale Sayers, the Kansas Comet, who burned briefly, but more brilliantly than anyone before or since.
