Book excerpt: Volume IV: Compiled and revised by Silas Felton. 1063 pp., revised with books missed in vols. I,II, and III, regimental publications, personal narratives, biographies, campaigns and battles, Northern and Southern. Felton?s new compilation is without peer. He covers the subject from five different perspectives: Regimental Publications and Personal Narratives, Union and Confederate Biographies, General References, Armed Forces and Campaigns and Battles. And, making the work extremely useful, the last 236 pages contain a complete Index of Authors of Volumes I through IV as well as a new Index of Titles in the Revised Volume IV.Furthermore, to clear up confusion created by the multiple names often used by Confederate units during the war ? artillery batteries in particular ? which carried a state designation but were commonly known by the battery commander?s name, Felton has cited a written work with a single number designation but indexed and listed it under its common appellation to aid the researcher and eliminate confusion.

Book The Tenth Minnesota Volunteers 1862 1865

Download or read book The Tenth Minnesota Volunteers 1862 1865 written by Michael A. Eggleston and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2014-01-10 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Civil War experience of the 10th Minnesota Volunteer Regiment resembles that of few other regiments. On the day the 10th Minnesota first mustered at Fort Snelling in August 1862, the Sioux Indian War broke out in western Minnesota. Soldiers who signed up to fight the Confederacy instead found themselves marching to defend the frontier and spending a year fighting two campaigns against the Sioux. When the 10th finally deployed south to fight the Confederate Army, it engaged in a series of skirmishes in the West, including battles at Tupelo and Nashville, and suffered many casualties. This chronicle merges the individual experiences of Union soldiers, Native Americans, and Confederates to offer a compelling, panoramic portrait of the 10th Minnesota during the Sioux Uprising and the Civil War, revealing the unwavering resolve of this remarkable regiment.

Book August Willich s Gallant Dutchmen

Download or read book August Willich s Gallant Dutchmen written by Joseph R. Reinhart and published by Kent State University. This book was released on 2006 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Civil War letters from soldiers serving in a German regiment Organized by Colonel August Willich, a former Prussian army officer who led troops during the German Revolution of 1848, Indiana's German 32nd Indiana regiment fought in the Western Theater of the Civil War. The 32nd Indiana forged an enviable combat record on the battlefields at Rowlett's Station in Kentucky; at Shiloh, Stones River, and Missionary Ridge in Tennessee; and at Chickamauga and Pickett's Mill in Georgia. The letters collected here originally appeared in German in wartime issues of German American newspapers. These rare documents connect the contemporary reader to the world of the patriotic immigrant soldier and his hard-fighting regiment, revealing personal motivations, wartime experiences, opinions, ethnic pride, and bravery, as this regiment engaged in some of the most bitter fighting in the West. These gripping letters also provide insight into the social, political, and cultural dimensions of the war and reveal the competing ethnic identities, nativism, and immigrant acculturation of late-nineteenth-century America. The Germans of the 32nd Indiana proved themselves to be "Gallant Dutchmen" in the fight to save the Union. Gallant Dutchmen is a valuable addition to Civil War studies and will also be welcomed by those interested in ethnic and immigration studies.

Book Fort Snelling and the Civil War

Download or read book Fort Snelling and the Civil War written by Stephen E. Osman and published by . This book was released on 2017-04 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over one hundred fifty years ago, the State of Minnesota offered the first volunteers to defend the Union in the fight against slavery. Every Minnesota soldier passed through historic Fort Snelling to the fighting. Using detailed research and first-hand accounts, Stephen E. Osman's book, Fort Snelling and the Civil War, tells the stories of the men and women who created a community in the old fort. The book explores the role of Fort Snelling as a major military post in Minnesota, and its transformation during the Civil War and the U.S.-Dakota Conflict of 1862 that followed. The fort eventually expanded to include several large camps of Native Americans, massive stock yards, huge warehouses, and secure barracks for draftees before reverting to a supply depot in 1865.Beautifully illustrated with more than one hundred photos and seven maps, it is a book that belongs on the shelf of anyone who is interested in the people and places that made Minnesota history, as well as those who are devotees of Civil War history and re-enactment, or are explorers of historic sites. The book will appeal to professional historians, Civil War devotees, and students of all ages.Ramsey County Historical Society President Chad Roberts says, "Fort Snelling and the Civil War greatly expands our understanding of the history of not only the fort, but of our community and the individuals who lived in the region. Wonderfully engaging and beautifully illustrated, this book is a pleasure to read and provides insights that will enlighten all readers, from experienced professional historians, to students first learning about this time period and our community. It is a unique offering that doesn't shy away from difficult topics. We are proud to add it to our catalog."

This book was released on 1934 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Antislavery crusader and dauntless champion of women's rights Jane Grey Swisshelm (1815-84) was a famed newspaper editor and popular speaker known for her spirited audacity and stinging denunciations. In this collection of letters written for the St. Cloud Democrat, Swisshelm provides vivid glimpses into life in mid-nineteenth century Minnesota through rich descriptions of places, characterizations of people, accounts of frontier travel, thoughts on pioneer journalism, reflections of public opinion, and just plain gossip. After the devastation of the Dakota War of 1862, Swisshelm set out on a national lecture tour [query--did she lecture about the war? If yes, add a bit about this]. On the road, she found wartime conditions so stirring, and the need for nurses so pressing, that she moved to Washington, D.C., for several years, working first in a military hospital and later at the war department. Her accounts of these days contain poignant scenes from her hospital service and inimitably spirited descriptions of life in the nation's capital. The letter entitled "Women Workers"--in which she savages certain fellow employees in government service--is but one of many fascinating entries. Facsimile pages of Swisshelm's newspaper articles, a handy index, and a biographical sketch of Swisshelm provide background and context to this pioneering woman's letters. Crusader and Feminist offers readers an intimate window into the world of a remarkable editor, lecturer, war nurse, and feminist. Historian Arthur J. Larsen was superintendent of the Minnesota Historical Society and curator of its newspaper department.
