Book Seven Spanish Cities and the Way to Them Classic Reprint

Download or read book Seven Spanish Cities and the Way to Them Classic Reprint written by Edward E. Hale and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-12 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Seven Spanish Cities, and the Way to Them Why should this man write a book about Spain, when he was there so short a time? That is a very fair question. The answer is chiefly personal. In my very earliest days, an uncle, aunt, and cousin of mine, all very dear to me in my babyhood, went to Spain and remained there many years. Their letters from Spain and their Spanish curiosities were among the home excitements of my childhood; and the great red-letter day was the day of their return. Well do I recollect the box of éon-bom they brought me. There were some varieties in it, which I have never seen again to this day. This experience made Spain stand out from the map of Europe to my boyish eyes, and I felt a certain surprise that the geographies and the newspapers had so little to tell of it. In after days, there came to me a time when I hoped, for a little while, to be Mr. Prescott'sreader in his great historical work. That hope was soon disappointed; but it led me to the study of the Spanish language, and it brought me his kind friendship while he lived. Book Moorish Cities in Spain Classic Reprint

Download or read book Moorish Cities in Spain Classic Reprint written by C. Gasquoine Hartley and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-04-26 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Moorish Cities in Spain To see the sun hangin amid an azure sky, to watch through long indefinite minutes the indigo wreaths of shadow draping the rugged heights of the Sierra de Cordoba, to hear the dull swirl Of the river, then to turn and gaze at the city, white and motion less in the blaze of the midday sun, still encircling the sweep of the Guadalquiver, as it tumbles and eddies in its wide bed, clasped tight from bank to bank by the great Moorish bridge - these things evoke reflections on the ever-changing fate of Spain. Sad indeed is the place, sad and strangely suggestive, for the reason that we shall scarcely find elsewhere a city whose past sleeps so completely. This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Spanish Cities With Glimpses of Gibraltar and Tangier It was a bright April day when we left Cannes and the Riviera, on the way to Marseilles. We were loth to leave the place where we had rested so pleasantly. All was lovely and paradisiacal; the sun shone warm and bright, the large palms waved their fronds gracefully and beckoned us to sit beneath their shade; the sea and shore were perfect in their beauty of outline and color; the hotel "Prince de Galles" was choice in all of its appointments, and the guests at this season were so few that it seemed like our private palace. On the day before leaving we drove to Grasse, over the picturesque hills, and saw her Majesty the Queen of England, with her daughter Princess Beatrice of Battenberg, and the Highland man-servant who always attends the Queen. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Builders of Spain Beginning with Geryon, who, Mariana tells us, was accounted by Greek and Latin authors the first king of Spain, and whose name, he also says, was Chaldean for stranger, we read of invasion after invasion; of Celtic, Phoenician, Carthaginian, Roman, Vandalic, Visigothic, Moorish and Arabic conquest and domination. The numbers of these invading hosts are now generally conceded to have been relatively small as compared with the native population; furthermore, its aboriginal stock has been the only permanent force in the history of the peninsula. But the native Spaniard was lacking in initiative and leadership, and each alien people in turn has left the impress of its char acter upon the civilization of its period, and upon the cities which were their chief monuments. These the mozo, or porter, carries directly from the train to the hotel omni bus, which another good custom of the country is always in waiting, no matter at what hour the arrival. First class travel in Spain is about the same as second class elsewhere; second class is like third class in France, except on the express route from Paris to Madrid, and in Catalonia, where second class is comfortable. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Spain in Profile: A Summer Among the Olives and Aloes There is a class of readers whom the unscien tific traveler would gladly reach and interest, the light Skimmers of summer books between whom and distant countries lie, - not one, but many seas, and whose only hope, in all probabil ity, of seeing them is through the more favored eyes of others. For these - not for those who have personally 'undertaken the adventure of Spain this volume is specially written, a se ries of profiles projected more or less vaguely by a Spanish sun. The author feels his errors of omission and of commission quite as keenly as the most hostile critic could desire, and would hesitate to publish his sketches at all for more they do not profess to be - if. The general im pression pervading them were unfavorable to the Spaniards. Much has doubtless been over looked, much inadequately seen but the book is in no sense a guide-book, and wherever it hasbeen possible, details such as are found in guide books are left to those compilations. The reali ties of landscape, the mode of life and Of travel, the aspect of the old Spanish cities, the habits of the people, the vicissitudes of a summer journey set down just as they appeared, form the staple of these pages. Personal impressions may, per adventure, have a sort of value 5 and if this slight record, which pretends to nothing beyond being a faithful transcription of personal impressions, should awaken the interest of a single reader and persuade him to study a most interesting country for himself, its aim will be more than accom plished. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Spain The fact that this book is in great part a summary, or selection, from one of mine, as is stated in the Preface, makes it almost a duty for me to do what would in any event be a great pleasure in the case of a work by Professor Chap man. I refer to the duty of writing a few paragraphs by way Of introduction. But, at the same time, this circum stance causes a certain conflict of feelings in me, since no one, unless it be a pedant, can act so freely in self-criticism as he would if he were dealing with the work of another. Fortunately, Professor Chapman has incorporated much of his own harvest in this volume, and to that I may refer with entire lack Of embarrassment. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Impressions of Spain Of the historical interest attached to St. Sebastian, we will say nothing are they not written in the book of the chronicles of Napier and Napoleon The following morning, after a fine and crowded service at the Church of S. Maria, where they first saw the beautiful Spanish custom of the women being all veiled, and in black, two of the party started at Seven in the morning, in a light carriage, for Loyola. The road throughout is beautiful, reminding one of the Tyrol, with picturesque Villages, old Roman bridges, quaint manor-houses, with coats of arms emblazoned over their porticoes rapid, clear trout-streams and fine glimpses of snowy mountains on the left, and of the bright blue sea on the right. The flowers too were lovely. There was a dwarf blue bugloss of an intensity of colour which is only equalled by the large forget-me-not on the mountain-sides of Lebanon. The peasants are all small proprie tors. They were cultivating their fields in the most primitive way, father, mother, and children working the ground with a two-pronged fork.
