Told the Venetian Ambassador that the Pope as Vicar of Christ was lord of all temporal princes. He claimed over-lordship everywhere. SO late as under Sixtus V. The works of Bellarmine were put on the Index for allowmg the Pope only an indirect authority in temporals. The attempt to combine the temporal and the spiritual supremacy of the Pope is, in fact, the turning-point in the problem of the Reformation.
