Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Church Triumphant If the Bible be thus inspired, the Holy Spirit having been the controlling agent in the selection of ideas and the use of material, and the final authority in the choice of words, figures, phrases, and forms used, then a most rigid scrutiny of the (original) text in its symbolism, its construction, and its verbal elements, will surely repay richly for all the labor. Book excerpt: For 2,000 years, Catholicism—the largest religion in the world and in the United States—has shaped global history on a scale unequaled by any other institution. But until now, Catholics interested in their faith have been hard-pressed to find an accessible, affirmative, and exciting history of the Church. Triumph is that history. Inside, you'll discover the spectacular story of the Church from Biblical times and the early days of St. Peter—the first pope—to the twilight years of John Paul II. It is a sweeping drama of Roman legions, great crusades, epic battles, toppled empires, heroic saints, and enduring faith. And, there are stormy controversies: Dark Age skullduggery, the Inquistition, the Renaissance popes, the Reformation, the Church's refusal to accept sexual liberation and contemporary allegations like those made in Hitler's Pope and Papal Sin. A brawling, colorful history full of inspiring pageantry and spirited polemic, Triumph will exhilarate, amuse, and infuriate as it extols the glories of Catholic history and the gripping stories of its greatest men and women.

Download or read book The Month of Mary Conceived Without Sin Classic Reprint written by Auguste Joseph Alphonse Gratry and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-22 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Month of Mary, Conceived Without Sin Every age of the Church is, in a certain sense, more glorious than any of 'the ages which have preceded it. It is true that there have been special ages in which God has magnified the Church more visibly than in others, and has been pleased to illustrate it with peculiar splendor and these Special ages have by no means followed each other in chronological succession. But on the whole, the glory of the Church increases with its age. It be comes more famous by its very vicissitudes. Every trial through which it passes is a fresh illumination of its divine origin and its unearthly character. It grows more honorable by the mere force of time, because of the increased number of dangers which it has surmounted, of hostile predictions which it has belied, and of grand human institutions which it has outlived. Moreover the number of the saints in the Church triumphant multiplies yearly, . And cannot be, according to St. Paul's law of sym pathy, without influence on the Church militant. Thus the past, as it departs, is forever adorning the Church with beautiful monuments and interesting memorials, while the present, as it reinforces the multitudes of heaven, is forever infusing fresh vigor, joy and liberty into the body upon earth. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A much neglected field of study has been opened by the research of the author into the history of the Christian church from its apostolic origins to the close of the eighteenth century. Taking as his thesis the prominence given to the Church in the Wilderness in Bible prophecy, and the fact that “‘the Church in the Wilderness,’ and not the proud hierarchy enthroned in the world’s great capital, was the true church of Christ,” he has spent years developing this subject. In its present form, Truth Triumphant represents much arduous research in the libraries of Europe as well as in America. Excellent ancient sources are most difficult to obtain, but the author has been successful in gaining access to many of them. To crystallize the subject matter and make the historical facts live in modem times, the author also made extensive travels throughout Europe and Asia. The doctrines of the primitive Christian church spread to Ireland, Scotland, and Wales. As grains of a mustard seed they lodged in the hearts of many Godly souls in southern France and northern Italy — people known as the Albigenses and the Waldenses. The faith of Jesus was valiantly upheld by the Church of the East. This term, as used by the author, not only includes the Syrian and Assyrian Churches, but is also the term applied to the development of apostolic Christianity throughout the lands of the East. The spirit of Christ, burning in the hearts of loyal men who would not compromise with paganism, sent them forth as missionaries to lands afar. Patrick, Columbanus, Marcos, and a host of others were missionaries to distant lands. They braved the ignorance of the barbarian, the intolerance of the apostate church leaders, and the persecution of the state in order that they might win souls to God. To unfold the dangers that were ever present in the conflict of the true church against error, to reveal the sinister working of evil and the divine strength by which men of God made truth triumphant, to challenge the Remnant Church today in its final controversy against the powers of evil, and to show the holy, unchanging message of the Bible as it has been preserved for t hose who will “fear God, and keep His commandments” — these are the sincere aims of the author as he presents this book to those who know the truth. MERLIN L. NEFF.

Book Christ Triumphant and Christian Ideal Classic Reprint

Download or read book Christ Triumphant and Christian Ideal Classic Reprint written by Perry Calhoun Schilling and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christ Triumphant and Christian Ideal Since the beginning of the art of writing man's path has been strewn with many books of a religious nature. They have been uplifting and inspiring and have helped to steer thousands of groping, fainting hearts to a higher life. But there are many momentous questions of theology that have been challenging and staggering the minds of greatest theologians and perplexing the hearts of the whole christian world. The author of this book has found the solution to many of these vital problems, through his knowledge of holy writ; and to those who are fortunate enough to read these pages, the mists of doubt and uncertainty will disappear, like the fog before the mid-day sun. These chapters began as sermons and lectures delivered by Dr. Schilling during his pastorates in Texas and Oklahoma. The first chapter was the subject of a sermon preached in the pulpit of the First Baptist Church, of Humble, Texas. It was an extemporaneous production of a sick and deeply distressed preacher and was attended with blessed and glorious results. The sermon attracted wide attention and appeared in several secular newspapers shortly after it was delivered, and later during the near years, it appeared in a number of religious journals, the last one to run the sermon before it was incorporated in this work, being the "Western Recorder," of Louisville, Ky. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Triumphant Certainties: And Other Sermons "We know that whosoever is born of God sinneth not; but he that is begotten of God keepeth himself, and that wicked one toucheth him not." 1 John. v. 18. John closes his letter with a series of triumphant certainties, which he considers as certified to every Christian by his own experience. "We know that whosoever is born of God sinneth not ... we know that we are of God ... and we know that the Son of God is come." Now, that knowledge which he thus follows out on these three lines is not merely an intellectual conviction, but it is the outcome of life, and the broad seal of experimental possession is stamped upon it Yet the average Christian reads this text, and shrugs his shoulders and says, "Well! perhaps I do not understand it, but, so far as I do, it seems to me to say a thing which is contradicted by the whole experience of life." "We know that whosoever is born of God sinneth not"; and some of us are driven by such words, and parallel ones which occur in other places, to a presumptuous over-confidence, and some of us to an equally unscriptural despondency; and a great many of us to laying John's triumphant certainty up upon the shelf where the unintelligible things are getting covered over with dust. Book A History of the Formation and Growth of the Reformed Episcopal Church 1873 1902 Classic Reprint

Download or read book A History of the Formation and Growth of the Reformed Episcopal Church 1873 1902 Classic Reprint written by Mrs. Annie Darling Price and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-08-27 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Formation and Growth of the Reformed Episcopal Church, 1873-1902 This book is called forth by a strongly-felt need for some gathering together of the various threads of the history of the Reformed Episcopal Church during its twenty-five years and more of existence. Many and able have been the pamphlets and articles written, but no connected account has been recorded. The years are passing, and already some of those who bravely, for con science' sake, faced hardness as soldiers of Jesus Christ, yielded up position, friends, wealth, not counting even their lives dear unto themselves, have joined the Church Triumphant. For this reason, the call came, while many of those earnest laborers were yet with us, for some one to weave into one golden thread, their recollections of our early days, that there might be left in the hands of the workers in years to come a clear and accurate history of the reasons for the founding of our Church, and its for mation and history during its first quarter of a century. Such a book is of necessity largely a compilation, a transcript of the thoughts of others. And many thanks are due to those whose kind assistance and encouragement has made such a work possible. Among them also were some of those valued friends who are to-day rejoicing in the presence of the Lord. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
