Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Church of Thibet: And the Historical Analogies of Buddhism and Christianity, "a Lecture Delivered Before the Students' Literary and Scientific Society," "in the Framji Cowasji Intitution, Bombay," The materials for this lecture were derived, as stated in the text, from sources which are accessible to everybody. My chief obligations are due to Burnouf. Lassen, and Keoppen, more particularly the last, without whose aid my lecture could certainly never have been written. I can well believe that I have fallen into some errors in my exposition of Buddhist theology, as matters of this kind are open to much dispute, and probably there have been recent additions to our knowledge of this subject with which I am unacquainted. For the purpose, however, which I had in view, minute accuracy was unessential. In the comparative study of religious phenomena the most obvious and general facts are the most important. I cannot guess whether any of my Brahmanic friends and hearers were displeased with the freedom of my references to the Brahmanic gods, and the system of caste. Probably they have become so familiar with depreciatory criticism, from missionary and liberal quarters alike, of their institutions and creed, that now they rather like it, or at least never think of resenting it Some of my Christian hearers were, I fear, not quite so tolerant of the frequent references to the dose analogies between Buddhist and Christian supernaturalism. Many persons who hold on the dogmas of their inherited brief is of the lightest kind, still object strongly to hear them questioned in India, or dassed with native beliefs. Their pride of race is wounded by whatever seems to put them on a level with the Indian races. With this feeling I have no share, for 1 held strongly that if England has much to impart to India, she has also something to learn from her. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Church of Thibet: And the Historical Analogies of Buddhism and Christianity, "a Lecture Delivered Before the Students' Literary and Scientific Society," "in the Framji Cowasji Intitution, Bombay," Paris, we are indebted for almost all our knowledge of northern Buddhism. Of the two works by Carl Frie drich Koeppen, to which Lassen directs his readers, I am only acquainted with the latter, the Lamazlsclze Hierar chie and Kirche, and I am indebted to it for most of the historical information and many of the views contained in this lecture. The more popular work of Barthelemy St. Hilaire, Le Budd/ta et se Religion, l first read many years ago in the caves of Ajanta, in Khandeish, in pre sence of the most impressive memorials of Buddhist art and worship, and l have never forgotten the delightful impressions which I received from it. My Companions in that visit to the famous Buddhist sanctuary were Sir A. Grant, my distinguished predecessor in the posi tion which I have now the honour to hold, and the lamented Dr. Bhau Da'i, who was long connected, if lam not mistaken, with your Association. His great knowledge of Indian archeology and the religious his tory of his countrymen made his companionship on that occasion most valuable. Book Christianity and Buddhism

Download or read book Christianity and Buddhism written by Whalen Lai and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Christianity and Buddhism Whalen Lai and Michael von Bruck bring together for scholars, students, and interested lay observers the developments and understandings reached in Christian-Buddhist dialogue in six key regions of the world. After a two-generations-long exploration by scholars and devotees, the authors judge it opportune to furnish a bird's-eye view of the terrain that dialogue has covered. Lai and von Bruck explore questions such as what is meant by a-theism and God-talk in the two traditions, asking whether the dialogue has revealed irreconcilable opposition or areas where each side can profit from insights from the other. They acknowledge that similarities of language in the two traditions can mask differences in substance, while differences in language can mask agreements in substance: and it is not always clear which is the case. While a first-generation dialoguer, Joseph Kitagawa, once noted that "mutual monologue" was a better description of the Christian-Buddhist project than "dialogue", Lai and von Bruck point to areas of important, dynamic understanding and clarification of where dialogue needs to go to address disagreements as well.

Book The Fourth Gospel is a theological after thought

Download or read book The Fourth Gospel is a theological after thought written by Helena Petrovna Blavatsky and published by Philaletheians UK. This book was released on 2024-05-21 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Fourth Gospel is the production of an unknown author, probably a Greek Platonist. For well over a century and a half after the death of Jesus there is not one shred of evidence to connect its learned author with the “disciple whom Jesus loved,” i.e., the author of Revelation. In fact, the Fourth Gospel is revelation in reverse, upside-down. The contrast of thought between the two evangels, as well as the harsh Hebraistic Greek of the Revelation, when confronted with the polished elegance of the Fourth Gospel are too glaring to be denied. The style of Alexandrian Philosophy and the mysticism of Christian Platonists, evident throughout the last gospel, are skilfully interwoven with Pauline Christianity and put into the mouth of Jesus. The beauty of the Fourth Gospel glows bright in the light of Alexandrian Philosophy. Moreover, the Fourth Gospel can neither establish the veracity of miracles, nor the insanity of Divine Revelation.
