Download or read book British Settlers in Natal 1824 1857 written by Shelagh O'Byrne Spencer and published by University of Kwazulu Natal Press. This book was released on 1981 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new volume of British Settlers in Natal is part of a massive research project to identify immigrants who came to Natal from Britain before 1858, and to collect biographical material on them and their children. The year 2000 was the year chosen to commemorate the advent of the largest body of settlers, those despatched by J.C. Byrne & Co. in the years 1849-1851. Although Spencer's work focuses on British immigrants who came to settle in Natal, its interest and usefulness are not confined to this region. Some of the new Natalians, and many of the next generation, moved all over South Africa, and indeed all over the world. Spencer's work has already proved to be indispensable to anyone doing research into Natal history, and libraries will welcome this new volume. This seventh volume covers Gadney to Guy.
Download or read book Stained Glass Windows of Canterbury New Zealand written by Fiona Ciaran and published by Otago University Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the world's first scholarly account of any region's nineteenth and twentieth-century stained glass, and is written by one of the few specialists trained in the field. The author presents a comprehensive catalogue of the 711 ecclesiastical stained glass windows in Canterbury, many of which are of international significance. She shows the shift from imported to local work, the development of New Zealand imagery, and how stained glass windows can be powerful social indicators. She argues that stained glass in Canterbury not only represents the most important regional collection of windows in New Zealand, but that the exportation of nineteenth and twentieth-century stained glass from Britain is represented in microcosm in Canterbury, thus necessitating a reappraisal of the history of British stained glass. The book also presents much new information about British stained glass artists, and is of great relevance to any country with glass from Britain.

Book excerpt: Till the researches of modern historians proved the contrary, a widespread belief existed in this country that the accession of Elizabeth was hailed by the majority of the nation as the deliverance of an enthralled and coerced people from the bondage of Home. In view, however, of known facts, even hostile critics are forced to admit that the final establishment of the tenets of the Heformation ill England was the outcome of a slow process of evolution-assisted, it is true, by a protestant legislature and several favorable local circumstances, but still an evolution-which lasted the greater part of a century. At the outset, little if anything presaged the ultimate and mighty change. The Queen received the congratulations of the episcopate with approbation and caused Masses to be duly sung for her sister's soul. In her own domestic chapel she continued to be present at the angnst sacrifice of the Catholic Church, frequently availed herself of Confession, manifested respect for sacred images and pictures, and was I indulgent to the affectionate practice of praying for the souls of the departed.' In a word, she showed by her whole demeanour her resolution of abiding by her solemn oath to the late Queen' to live and die a true Roman Catholic.'
