This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Church of England and the Teaching of Bishop Colenso "You need boldness to risk all for God - to stand by the Truth and its supporters against men's threatenings and the devil's wrath; ... you need a patient meekness to bear the galling calumnies and false surmises with which, if you are faithful, that same Satanic working, which, if it could, would burn your body, will assuredly assail you daily through the pens and tongues of deceivers and deceived, who, under a semblance of a zeal for Christ, will evermore distort your words, misrepresent your motives, rejoice in your failings, exaggerate your errors, and seek by every poisoned breath of slander to destroy your powers of service." - Sermon preached at the Consecration of Bishop Colenso, St. Andrew's Day, 1853, by Samuel Wilberforce, Bishop of Oxford. Luther himself, when he nailed his theses on the church-door at Wittenberg, was not committing himself to a more momentous work than the Bishop of Natal when he resolved to search into the structure of the Pentateuch. - Life of Bishop Colenso, i.481. Book The Life of Christian Doctrine

Download or read book The Life of Christian Doctrine written by Mike Higton and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2020-07-09 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The lives of Christian churches are shaped by doctrinal theology. That is, they are shaped by practices in which ideas about God and God's ways with the world are developed, discussed and deployed. This book explores those practices, and asks why they matter for communities seeking to follow Jesus. Taking the example of the Church of England, this book highlights the embodied, affective and located reality of all doctrinal practices – and the biases and exclusions that mar them. It argues that doctrinal theology can in principle help the church know God better, even though doctrinal theologians do not know God better than their fellow believers. It claims that it can help the church to hear in Scripture challenges to its life, including to its doctrinal theology. It suggests that doctrinal disagreement is inevitable, but that a better quality of doctrinal disagreement is possible. And, finally, it argues that, by encouraging attention to voices that have previously been ignored, doctrinal theology can foster the ongoing discovery of God's surprising work.

Book excerpt: Trollope and the Church of England is the first detailed examination of Trollope's attitude towards his Anglican faith and the Church, and the impact this had on his works. Durey controversially explodes the myth that Trollope's most popular characters just happened to be clerical and were simply a skit on the Church, by revealing the true extent of his lifelong fascination with religion.
