Download or read book The Furnace of Affliction written by Jennifer Graber and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2011-03-14 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing on the intersection of Christianity and politics in the American penitentiary system, Jennifer Graber explores evangelical Protestants' efforts to make religion central to emerging practices and philosophies of prison discipline from the 1790s through the 1850s. Initially, state and prison officials welcomed Protestant reformers' and ministers' recommendations, particularly their ideas about inmate suffering and redemption. Over time, however, officials proved less receptive to the reformers' activities, and inmates also opposed them. Ensuing debates between reformers, officials, and inmates revealed deep disagreements over religion's place in prisons and in the wider public sphere as the separation of church and state took hold and the nation's religious environment became more diverse and competitive. Examining the innovative New York prison system, Graber shows how Protestant reformers failed to realize their dreams of large-scale inmate conversion or of prisons that reflected their values. To keep a foothold in prisons, reformers were forced to relinquish their Protestant terminology and practices and instead to adopt secular ideas about American morals, virtues, and citizenship. Graber argues that, by revising their original understanding of prisoner suffering and redemption, reformers learned to see inmates' afflictions not as a necessary prelude to a sinner's experience of grace but as the required punishment for breaking the new nation's laws.

Book Forged in the Fiery Furnace

Download or read book Forged in the Fiery Furnace written by Diana L. Hayes and published by Orbis Books. This book was released on 2012 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: African American spirituality was forged in the fiery furnace of slavery, segregation, and ongoing racial discrimination in both church and society. But African Americans are a people who are strengthened rather than weakened by their experience. This volume traces how African Americans have articulated their faith and love of God in language, song, and daily living. Beginning with its spiritual roots in Africa, Hayes shows how African American spirituality encompassed and incorporated the experience of slavery and the encounter with Christianity. Remarkably, African American slaves were able to find in the religion of their oppressors a message of hope, affirmation, and resistance. Through stories, song, distinctive forms of prayer, celebration, and prophetic witness, Hayes shows how the spirituality of African Americans has nurtured their survival as well as promoting action on behalf of the community and the greater society.

Book The Expulsive Power of a New Affection

Download or read book The Expulsive Power of a New Affection written by Thomas Chalmers and published by Gideon House Books. This book was released on 2015-06-17 with total page 25 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.” — 1 John 2:15 Those who struggle with habitual sin are keenly aware of the despair and fatigue that comes from trying harder and harder to control the desire to do what is wrong in the eyes of God. For this person, there be times of limited success in overcoming sin, but eventually he/she falls back again into unhealthy patterns. In "The Expulsive Power of a New Affection", Thomas Chalmers argues that no matter how hard we may try, we’ll never overcome habitual sin in our lives unless we switch our affections from the world to Jesus Christ. Thankfully Christ loved us first and is more than willing to set us free if we’d only realize the true Gospel power that we can all have in our lives today.

Download or read book Your God is Too Glorious written by Chad Bird and published by New Reformation Publications. This book was released on 2023-11-14 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most of us are regular people who have good days and bad days. Our lives are radically ordinary and unexciting. That means they're the kind of lives God gets excited about. While the world worships beauty and power and wealth, God hides his glory in the simple, the mundane, the foolish, working in unawesome people, things, and places. In our day of celebrity worship and online posturing, this is a refreshing, even transformative way of understanding God and our place in his creation. It urges us to treasure a life of simplicity, to love those whom the world passes by, to work for God's glory rather than our own. And it demonstrates that God has always been the Lord of the cross--a Savior who hides his grace in unattractive, inglorious places.Your God Is Too Glorious reminds readers that while a quiet life may look unimpressive to the world, it's the regular, everyday people that God tends to use to do his most important work.

Book Whispers of His Movement

Download or read book Whispers of His Movement written by Gina Gallagher and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2013-09-23 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is nothing more intimidating than a full mind and an empty page. It is wonderful to notice things, to be aware, to ponder as you go about your day. The thoughts bubble over and fill every cranial crevice. There is a desperate need to deposit them somewhere. So in that desperation, Whispers Of His Movement was born. I like the fact that it was birthed in desperation, because that is what I am. I am desperate and in need of God's amazing grace. The Whispers Of His Movement, the seemingly silent, imperceptible, Sovereign moments that happen each day, the ones we often miss in our busyness and self-absorption. Journey with me, as He whispers. Gina Gallagher is a woman with a heart for God and all He has for her--and us. She shares with honesty and insight how God fits into real life and enriches every day. -Gayle Roper, www.widowsjourney.com The Lord graced me with the gift of fellowship with Gina Gallagher, many years ago. She is the Proverbs 31 woman serving our Lord today. Her tender love for the Lord and for others is a divine gift. While we live many states and miles apart, one day on the phone she shared about the Father's whispers in her daily life. 'Whispers of His Movement' was birthed in her heart then. I always knew she should write from her walk with the Lord, taking His teaching onto others. May your day be extra blessed to hear these whispers from Abba Father too. Book If Jesus Is Lord

  • Author : Ronald J. Sider
  • Publisher : Baker Academic

  • ISBN : 1493418262
  • Pages : 256 pages

Download or read book If Jesus Is Lord written by Ronald J. Sider and published by Baker Academic. This book was released on 2019-07-16 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What does Jesus have to say about violence, just war, and killing? Does Jesus ever want his disciples to kill in order to resist evil and promote peace and justice? This book by noted theologian and bestselling author Ronald J. Sider provides a career capstone statement on biblical peacemaking. Sider makes a strong case for the view that Jesus calls his disciples to love, and never kill, their enemies. He explains that there are never only two options: to kill or to do nothing in the face of tyranny and brutality. There is always a third possibility: vigorous, nonviolent resistance. If we believe that Jesus is Lord, then we disobey him when we set aside what he taught about killing and ignore his command to love our enemies. This thorough, comprehensive treatment of a topic of perennial concern vigorously engages with the just war tradition and issues a challenge to all Christians, especially evangelicals, to engage in biblical peacemaking. The book includes a foreword by Stanley Hauerwas.
