Book excerpt: Throughout nineteenth century America, religious officials often condemned the theatre as an inversion of the house of God, similar to the church in architectural structure and organization but wholly different in purpose and values. This book explores the many ways in which religious institutions supported by capitalism profoundly affected the early development of American theatre. The author analyzes the church's critical view toward common theatre practices, including the use of female and child performers, and the lower class alliance with the stage. Three appendices provide period correspondence, including an excerpt from Mark Twain's February 1871 "Memoranda," in which Twain criticizes an Episcopalian reverend for denying church burial to a popular stage comedian.

The points of contact between religion and theater are numerous, and Dean J. Seal offers guidelines for making the connection work no matter what level of experience or financial commitment a congregation brings to the task. The author, who has worked in the worlds of both church and stage, provides background on the historical and theological relationship between religion and theater. He then offers practical advice and guidelines for the use of theater in the context of ministry—from discussion groups to bibliodrama to play-going to ultimately producing a show. This book is a resource for ministers, lay leaders, youth groups, and members of the theater community who desire greater integration of faith and work.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Theology is inherently theatrical, rooted in God's performance on the world stage and oriented toward faith seeking performative understanding in the theatre of everyday life. Following Hans Urs von Balthasar's magisterial, five-volume Theo-Drama, a growing number of theologians and pastors have been engaging more widely with theatre and drama, producing what has been recognized as a "theatrical turn" in theology. This volume includes thirteen essays from theologians and pastors who have contributed in distinct ways to this theatrical turn and who desire to deepen interdisciplinary dialogue between theology and theatre. The result is an unprecedented collection of essays that embodies and advances theatrical theology for the purpose of enriching theological reflection and edifying the church.

Book The Relationship Between the Church and the Theatre

Download or read book The Relationship Between the Church and the Theatre written by Christine C. Schnusenberg and published by . This book was released on 2017-06-12 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work has grown out of the question regarding the negative relationship of the Church Fathers toward the Roman theatre and the apparent subsequent theatre vacuum of over 400 years (ca. 530 AD to 930 AD). This is considered to be the time which lies between the end of the Roman theatre and the appearance of the quem quaeritis tropes. This work moves between these two poles: on the one hand, between the polemics against the pagan Roman theatre which the Church Fathers described as a theatrum daemonicum and on the other hand, the appearances of dramatic-liturgical configurations in the Christian Church. This work attempts to connect these two opposite poles instead of separating them. This study begins with an examination of documents dealing with the patristic polemic. This is followed by an examination in chronological sequence of the development of the liturgical dramatic manifestations from Jerusalem to Amalarius of Metz. It also examines the allegorical method connected with this development. In conclusion the argument is maintained that aside the theatrum daemonicum, a theatrum infictitium et sapirituale is beginning to develop. In this re-publication of ""The Relationship Between the Church and the Theatre,"" a study that meticulously explores the numerous textural traditions of liturgical drama, the remarkably praiseworthy and trailblazing nature of the scholarship of Dr. Christine C. Schnusenberg remains just as evident today as it was in 1981, at the time of its original appearance. --Gail S. Werblood, Ph.D. As former director for fifteen years at the Institut des Sources Chretiennes and as publisher during this period of about a hundred volumes, I see it as urgent not to let get lost the work of C.C. Schnusenberg The Relationship between the Church and the Theater. First, the subject must emerge from the condemnation of the ancient theater, especially the Latin theater, by the Church Fathers. Second, it treats, like a long narrative, a most captivating story. Third, it shows that the narratives bear a doctrine of salvation. The author, who is of great patristic culture, has succeeded in bringing out a major work, the Missae expositionis Geminus codex of the Carolingian Amalarius of Metz. The work is still a treasure trove of facts and insights. --Fr. Dominique Bertrand, SJ ""This book deals precisely . . . with how Christian authors from patristic times through the Carolingian era conceived of the Eucharistic liturgy as the greatest possible form of drama surpassing the theatrical tradition of classical antiquity . . . an impressive dossier of patristic and early medieval quotations . . ."" --Roger Reynolds, Church History. ""The author has tried painstakingly to do justice to such a many-layered and vast topic . . . it seems most desirable to cultivate the interdisciplinary dialogue so that the important problems with which Schnusenberg deals, can further be clarified . . ."" --H.B. Meyers, SJ, Zeitschrift F. Kath, Theologie. ""This fascinating, interdisciplinary work has achieved a unique synthesis of two problematic poles: of the harsh polemics of the Church Fathers against the Roman theatre, and of the simultaneous and subsequent development of a Christian liturgical drama and theatre."" --Rowman & Littlefield Christine C. Schnusenberg was born in 1928 at Gut Gewekenhorst in St. Vit-Wiedenbrueck, Germany. Subsequent to her work in the leadership of the WLL-Landjugend (rural youth) in Nord-Rhein Westfalen, she emigrated in 1958 to the USA. She enrolled at Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska, and concluded her studies with a Bakkalaureot (BA) in 1967. Subsequently she studied at the University of Chicago in the Department of German Languages and Literature and was awarded the Magister (MA) in 1968, and in 1976 the PhD. After this, she pursued post-doctoral research in the history of religions and hermeneutic with Professors Mirce Eliade and Paul Ricoeur in the Committee on Social Thought and was employ

This collection of fourteen critical essays seeks to demystify the ties--both practical and ideological--that have long bound Catholicism to theatrical production. This volume offers insights into medieval theatre, Jesuit drama, ballet and opera, modern stagings of medieval liturgical drama, Lorca and Lope de Vega as Catholic playwrights, Italian Catholic women's drama, Catholic play-wrighting and acting, and the unique challenges of teaching theatre in Catholic universities.
